The MSWJR Continued - tender brake gear

Faced with mounting the brake gear the next step was to add axle journals, wheels etc so clearances could be fixed. In true 'Perseverance' style the journals have to be retained in the guides by short lengths of wire -

That done I then set about the brake gear. I menytioned in the earlier post that I thought the hangers were mounted too far back -

so I re-drilled them 1.5mm further forward -

which seemed to work. So then it was time to tie it all together - bearing in mind that the pull rods mount behind the wheels and in any case I wanted to make it removable.. Four hours later -

Mind you, all this faffing about with brake rodding etc seems a bit pointless - there are no brake standards in the kit!

the sharp-eyed among you will note that I've (temporarily) used the original mounting holes. This is because I did not allow sufficient ngle on some of the brake blocks so currently they foul the wheels! More haste, less speed and something to be resolved in the next session, which due to work commitments will not be 'til Sunday at the earliest.

Also to be resolved (despite taking a lot of care over them) is re-siting the front left hornblock guide. Somehow it's slightly out of position so the axle is not truly perpendicular to the track. It may well be linked to 'Kentons' comment on the last update about stressing the frame. Ah well I've got lots of old 'Perseverance' hornblocks from the 'good old days'!

Thanks for reading these ramblings!

A little progress after all tonight - the hornblock problem is fixed and the chassis now runs 'true' - thanks also to limiting the side play with washers.

I'm also going to 'mod' the brake gear slightly, providing 'muffs for the hanger mounting points - they too were a bit 'floppy and might foul the wheels. Not a good idea with DCC & it's susceptablilty to short circuits!
