Mk.1 modifications

Hello all :)

Whilst browsing photos for Ropley on the net, I came across this one showing a modified Mk.1 BSK currently in use on the MHR:

It appears to be a standard BSK with a roller door fitted where the third window should be. I'm not sure what this is used for exactly, but it seemed like an ideal opportunity to bash a Farish Mk.1, and here is the result of an afternoons modelling:

Obviously the bogies will need to be swapped for a pair of Commonwealths and it looks like there could be some difference in the roof vents. I did try to replicate the corrugated nature of the door by scribing on the reverse side, but unfortunately the effect is lost under the first layer of paint. Still, it probably wouldn't be visible at this scale anyway. I also need to add the additional footboard under the roller door.

So far it's been a nice simple conversion which will add a little variety to the layout.

Cheers,

Tom.

Nice work. Brave, but nice :D

Some tricky lining to do, and painting those springs will be a challenge. Keep going, should be good.

Nice, an unusual subject, some sort of catering vehicle? It is ideal to add a splash of maroon to all that green.

Yes, that is nice. Like you said, I'm not sure what it's used for... I'm wondering what it's coupled to, that might answer the question.

Ex-Courier Coach. Here's one in the WCRC fleet, used as a support coach for main line steam tours. 80217

Thanks all :)

Mick, thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if it was a modification carried out by the MHR or whilst in BR ownership but that clears it up nicley!

As for lining, anyone know if there are any decals for this....... :D

Well, a bit more work this morning. I wasn't happy with the roller door, so a new one has been overlaid on top of the old one. This time I ran a screwdriver tip over the plastic before painting to give some texture to it.

The whole coach has been given a coat of RailMatch BR Crimson, as this seems closest to the colour used on the prototype. The window bars have also been painted to match.

Has anyone here used the TPM Commonwealth bogie kits with the new Farish Mk.1s??

Cheers all,

Tom.

Thread from the dead!

Tom, did you just brush paint the window frames? How easy was this? I'm struggling to find much to go on as regards the feasibility of doing this.

Hi Tom.

Yes, I just used a very fine brush to touch up the frames. The fact they are raised slightly helps the process! Any slight overspill was carefully removed with knife blade.

Cheers,

Tom.
