Bristol Barrow Road - Block Instruments & Bells

barrowroad

Just finished scratch building the Block Instruments, Bells, Telephones, Repeaters etc and fixed them to the shelf along with the Signal Diagram display panel - the latter will have a photoshopped diagram added after painting. I now have a Springside kit of whitemetal parts to sell after deciding they were not suitable.

In all a very fiddly job but the results are very satisfying.

The Block Instruments are made from 2.5mm square brass section with square section plasticard inserted into the tube, whilst the bells are turned up old 'Romford crankpins'.

The Instruments to the right are for communication between Kingswood Junction and Engine Shed Sidings, whilst to the left we have St Philips & Barrow Lane boxes.

Thats a really nice little detailing touch. This is going to be a very special layout once its finished.

Very nice Robin, and the advantages of modelling an actual location amply demonstrated! I have yet to decide what goes on my block shelf, not totally sure to be honest, given that the double track in one direction would have been Permissive Block, whilst in the other direction it is electric token (which will probably generate a scratchbuilt W.R. token instrument)...

I see that your block shelf was the kind supported from the floor - presumably the supports went through the frame? At least, that's how others appear to have been supported from what I can tell in photos. Some other M.R. boxes did appear to be suspended from the ceiling or roof beams, as many Western boxes were.

Tim,

As with a lot of modelling the instrument shelf, instruments themselves and their position are 'best guess' based on research and looking at a lot of photos as I do not have any photos of the interior of Lawrence Hill box. I decided to make the shelf supports based on the photos of St Albans South and the pics Tim V sent me and I have adapted to fit to the rear wall of the box.

Robin,

Either you don't go to bed or you work amazingly quickly. Yo are making me feel very guilty about my slow progress on current projects. Great stuff. blink.gif
