Progress - January 2011

Some of the other group members now have access to post to the blog but it was decided by popular demand that I should post a progress update. We decided to dedicate our most recent meeting for a photo shoot. Surprisingly I was the only one who showed up with a camera... even though I don't rate my abilities at phtographing 2mm scale models very highly. Anyway, here are the results.

The station area with my favourite Warship waiting to depart. John Russell has been doing a lot of work on the ground surfaces, roads and pavements. A row of buildings is also sprouting up behind the station. I've been painting the sea wall (I'll say more about this in another post). We're a bit worried about the colour mismatch between the sea wall and the retaining wall so further changes may be afoot. The beach is still looking pretty white but it's too handy for parking tea cups while work is in progress.

A few more buildings (built by John and myself) in the middle of the layout. The big hotel is just a mock-up while I try to figure out a good way to reproduce Critalls steel framed windows neatly in 2mm scale.

The East end of the layout with the unfinished chapel (another one of mine) on the hill overlooking the loco sidings. The grass is still awaiting some toning down.

A ground level view along the station frontage (built by Dick Chapman) showing the goods yard and parcels road.

Not strictly progress, but a view of the Signal Box (built by Glyn Rhys Parry) and scissors crossover (built by Richard Lake)

The layout is comming along really nicely, thank you for the update.

Would etching work for the hotel windows?

Am always happy to see this layout since discovering it at last years expo so thanks for the update.

I really like the shot of the Western, 47 and TTA (?) - perhaps you could post something about the work on the rolling stock sometime as it looks very interesting...

Missy - yes I'm sure that etching would work perfectly but somehow whenever we start thinking about having a custom etch done we start to worry about all of the other things that should be included on the etch and it just doesn't get done. If all other methods prove unsatisfactory then we still might go down that road.

Pete - yes, absolutely. I am planning some articles about my current project, so the first of these should be along soon. FWIW the 47 and TTA are pretty much out of the box Farish models with new wheels and couplings. The Western on the other hand has had rather more work done to it.

Coming on very nicely. I like the Brunel train shed. Did you see the 0 gauge one featured in MRJ probably bigger than you whole layout. The sea wall looks great.

Thanks Don - yes I did. Quite a piece of engineering. I will be writing some more words about the sea wall in the not too distant future. Hopefully one day I might finish painting the darned thing too.

Very 'Penzance' & brings back memories of a couple of happy weekends on the quay!

Thanks Ian - that's the effect we're looking for.
