Detailing a Deltic - Speedo cable and hubs, and Horns plus some photos - P4 Deltic Pt 9

Another quick update, with a few photos for accompaniment: The speedo cable has been completed using 2mm rod with a plasticard piece on top... fitted to the axle hub using a 0.6mm length of wire. The hub then has four small rod sections added to the corners, and sanded down to represent the fixings. The cable is 0.6mm brass wire, with a hollowed out 1mm dia rod piece – glued to the main hub.

A reverse construction was used for the rear unit, the plasticard piece being attached at the base (wire wire through it to anchor it to the bogie – hole drilled through top of spring, with small piece added to bogie side to distant it off. A small piece of shaped 1mm rod is used as the boss. 0.4mm wire was then run along from the hub to disappear behind the steps.

Previously, I’ve than added another wire piece from behind the steps running up to disappear behind the body (into the cab)... but this time, i reversed the process, adding a piece of elastic (thanks James) with a small piece of masking tape at the top... glued into a cut out channel... which can then be tucked behind the steps when assembled... this then makes the cable look more like the body attachment of the original.

I also added some air pipes to the horns... comprising 0.2mm wire bent to shape and attached to a small hole drilled in the side of the horn and top of the bonnet. Sure, metal horns might look better – but I think this embellishment looks quite nice.

With a little sunlight today, I grabbed a couple of photos with the loco balanced on one rail of some OO track... and I will get some P4 track soon!

I must get the mileage recorder fitted to this end!

I realise that it's only been a few days since my last entry, but I thought that the brief progress was worth another report.

Two words immediately spring to mind...

Cats + Whiskers :D

Looking great Jon...all these small additions/mods are going to make up one whole fantastic beast when finished.

Keep up the great work...

Wonderful attention to detail here Jon - the quality of the finish you're achieving is truly inspirational. I look forward to seeing her sprayed up in primer!

Thanks Pete... I think that's good  ... I'll take it that it was. I hope it'll look ok once done. Just fabricated the mileage recorder from plasticard (1.5mm x 1.5mm about 1mm thick) shaped with lugs attached to sides and circular port on top. I made three of these as the first two pinger of the tweezers never to be seen again  .

I also had a "Tailor of Gloucester" moment... i.e. "no more twist" James (above thanks for the comments by the way) gave me some elastic to make my sanding pipes... and I just realised that I've got abount 10cm left and need 8 sanding pipes at about 2cm each. The word "Bum" sprung to mind. I'm now going to be on the lookout for some alternatives and will leave this little task until supplies have been replensished - that'll teach me to think I've enough and use a bit for the speedo cable. Hey ho  .

James,

I'm not going to refuse that kind offer... and there was me about to go investigating bungie chords. If you could that'd be great. I'll send siome back you way when I replenish my stock... what scale elastic do you need for G ;) .
