Baseboard progress

Hi All.

Now I'm up at the parents where the baseboard for Ropley is living temporarily I've been able to make some progress.

There are a couple of small level changes over the yard at the real location and I have been thinking about a way to tackle these for a while now. Basically you have the main line & loop through the station on one level, then the wheel drop shed immediately behind this on a very slightly higher level, then the main yard on yet another slightly higher level again.

Initial thoughts were to model these different levels by cutting the baseboard but there was just a bit too much room for error and the risk of messing up the entire board which I didn't really want to do! My thoughts then turned to foam core board. I had used this for various stuff in the past and could attach the plan to it using spray mount then cut where needed without the risk of ruining the entire project. The different levels would be created by packing underneath to the required hight. In theory, it would also help with noise reduction when fixed in place with copydex.

So, this afternoon the plan was mounted to a piece of foam board and the cuts made. Here's the result:

I've made the changes in level slightly deeper to allow for the extra height of the rail and DAS clay where this is to be used which is why the yard may appear to be a bit higher on the model than in the prototype photo. The Ash pit is also still to be cut out ahead of the wheel drop but this will be done once the glue is set.

Keen students of this blog might also notice I've brought the shed forward onto this board slightly, primarily to help with hiding the join in boards and also to prevent the ash pit spanning the joint. I have lost a little at the other end as a result but this helps reduce the amount of carriage shed needed as a scenic break.

And finally, I couldn't resist a small leap forward into the future :D :

Hopefully tomorrow the first straight track can be laid and then it will really feel like this project is moving forward :)

Cheers all!

Good progress Tom

As James says, its always amazing the impression one gets from placing a few bits of rolling stock down on paper templates...exciting times ahead.

Now tell us that you didn't spend 5 minutes or so manouvering the stock around with your fingers :P
