2FS: The postman knocks twice..

Well he knocked once really this morning, but he had 2 packages for me from the kindly elves at shop1@2mmfs association. One with the rail, jigs and PCB's and the other with a huge box of Easitrac plastic sleepers. The excitement was too much to contain and with childish zimto opened this all up at the breakfast table. I must say that everything was really well packaged and was very quick in arriving too, only sent the order off last week on Thursday,

So then I set about printing out my test plan and although it is not calibrated as I am away from my normal printer I wanted to see how the space fitted the plan I think here there maybe a bit of moving around so that things aren't so cramped but the length will stay the same.

I have an old soldering iron here but no files or tools so have sent out for supplies and hopefully my requests might be met and I might be able to have a practice at the points before I get back to London. So one step forward to actually producing something..

Good to see that your toy's have turned up. I seem to find that I can go through one of those boxes of sleepers all to quickly.

Hi Kris,

Yes I was thinking about stock piling them but deliberately decided to stick to the amount I need, but I am pondering getting the jig now for the flexi.. can't wait to get started on building..

I've not found a need for a jig to build the flexitrack. If the rail has been nicely filed it normally just slips in. I normally put a tiny chamfer on to ease it on. I also leave the sleepers on the sprue until I have added the track. The extra rigidity makes it easier, I also put a dozen or so sections on at a time alternating the sides so that you don't get a curve before cutting the spure off. I have just finish making about 5ft up in the last hour.

Depends how much I need! (Now for a better answer) biggrin.gif

I tend to purchase the 10m coils of rail as I find they work fine for me. This allows me to make up so quite long lengths. The longest length that I have built is about 5ft. Having done that one I decided that I would go for slightly short lengths as a maximum in future, say no more than 4ft. At 5ft it just became very unwieldy. I see that you have bought the 500mm sections, as such your max length is going to be 500mm unless you significantly stagger the rail joints. I see no issues with a 500mm piece of track, easy to handle and quick to lay.

As an extra thought, did you buy the glue (1-164)? If not and you need some I would recommend it. It works far better than standard PVA and will hold the track in place whilst it dries, though a little weight on the track is helpful on curves. The glue also works very well with PCB track.

Kris, yes I got the glue :) I have one question about the track, how do you join the sections as it not like Peco with fishplates.. How do you get the smooth join from one to the next my guess is you leave n-sleeper spaces to push the new section into?

That's about it, a couple of sleeper is normally more than enough. You can do it with no sleepers but you do need to lay one section, wait for the glue to dry then lay the next section if you want to do it this way (at least that is the best way that I have found to do it).

Nice to see another taking up track construction. I hope to be started myself soon. I wonder do you need to cut the webs on the sleeper units on curves.

Hi Don,

I am looking forward to soldering up my first point :) The webbing is very flexible but I think a bit of pairing will be needed depending on the radius of the curves. I have very shallow ones to start off with so probably wont encounter this for some time. The sleeper sprues come in small amounts 6(?) sleepers for a section. I haven't got them in front of me at the moment.
