Today I decided to fit the brakes to the chassis. I wanted them to be removable for ease of maintenance and painting. I'd already soldered lengths of .5mm rod into the chassis for the top crossbar, with hindsight I should probably have used .7mm. The first step, after opening out the holes in the etches, was to solder one shoe to a length of .7mm rod. I drilled a .75mm hole into a wood strip to help position the shoe at 90 degrees, as seen here;

Then the other shoe was threaded into place and soldered, I relied on resting the assembly on a flat surface to keep things square;

After soldering up all three assemblies I threaded the outer brakes onto their hangers and held them in place with blue-tack then soldered a couple of lengths of .7mm rod onto them to hold the assemblies together;

The middle brakes were added after checking the position of the outers;

Only slight adjustments were necessary. Here's the complete brake assembly off the chassis;

My soldering isn't pretty today, the assembly still needs cleaning up, gently as theres not much strength in the etched shoes.

The plan is to add short lengths of tube over the chassis crossbars to hold the brake assembly central, then superglue the brakes in place after painting.

Next job is to finish the flycranks, they're drilled and tapped, just need filing to shape.
