Hello.

As Highclere is due to be on display at the RMWeb members day on the 2nd July it is about time I got at least the trackwork on the scenic boards finished off so I can run things at the show. The plan at the moment is to take just the two scenic boards which will hopefully give a flavour of the layout, even if it wont be finished.

So today I finishyed off the trackwork on the second board and got things running along it. I am now happy with all the track with the exception of a little bit under the bridge which is a little too awkward to get to and replace, the photo below shows the bit of track in question but bear in mind its been exaggerated a bit by the zoom on the camera lens!

The next step now is to take a serious look at the joint between the two scenic boards. When the layout was first built the join was very good, but now its looking very suspicious and this was confirmed at the 2mm Expo in Oxford a while back. Luckily a good friend Mark (Mitziblue) is going to help me with it.

Another thing I need to take a look at is the connectors for the lighting as for some reason I could not get the lights to work today. I have had problems with them in the past and I dont think the connectors currently on the layout are not very good quality so I am not getting enough power to the lights (the tube starters are in the lighting pelmets). Hopefully I will get an order placed tomorrow for some replacement, better quality connectors.

Missy, I have seen far worse kinks in track on the real thing! Scenery etc looking great

I will be interested to see how you resolve the baseboard joins, because I've got to build my second board soon and fit backcenes.

I am assuming the that Highclere is not with Witney at Railex this month?

I would like to get to the RMWeb show myself this year in any case.

Regards,

Chris

Hi Missy,

That first shot would be the kind of thing I'd step back and look at if anything was ever going wrong. Just... beautiful.

I really am looking forward to seeing Highclere at Stafford.

It still looks good without the buildings. Regarding the baseboard joint, is the problem the track join or trying to disguise the joint. I cannnot remember how you join the boards together, pattern dowels?

Can I suggest the plug together terminal strip these come in different amperages.

Hi Missy,

Lovely work as always.

A - How about planting a bush or small tree to hide the break in the fence ?

B - Glue foam (e.g. Peco ballast inlay) to the faces of the endboards, cut it to profile and paint to match the scenery on both sides. When the boards are bolted together, the foam squeezes and closes the gap...

Maybe another job for Funky Foam!

Regards,

Chris

The track subsidence under the bridge is very prototypical for the location you model!

Thanks for the comments folks yes.gif

As for the baseboard join Mark has already come over and helped me sand the join and replace the locating pins (thanks Mark) and hopefully this weekend I will use a little bit of car body filler just to tidy the join up.

ChrisL - No, Highclere is not at Railex this year, its been replaced by Marks Witney Euston but it is due to be there in 2012 (hopefully!)

Chris - Thanks for the tip, it makes perfect sense to hid the join with a hedge so once things are tidied up I think I will do that.

Dont forget that this Saturday (21st May) I am at the OXFORD MRC EXHIBITION doing a little demo so if you are comming along please say hello.
