A Lack of wood

I have been messing about with that old lack shelf I left in the garage some months ago, wondering if it would save me another woodworking session or three when it came to baseboards.

Here are a few pics, trying out building up from it with plywood and MDF. The result is not too light but seems solid enough.

One of the reasons for chucking the last attempt was that I want something fundamentally small, so that I will want to get it out more often, and can sit it on the kitchen table with at least one cassette on one end.

Glenfield on the outskirts of Leicester, on the old Swannington line, is indeed the location ( Andy - well spotted there! B) )

The 1100mm x 260mm seems to provide a little landscaping opportunity, and a platform of about 400mm - enough for 2-3

6-wheelers and engine.

From what I can see in the books I have, Glenfield either used the loop as a goods yard (or the platform itself?), as there appears to be a building which looks suspiciously like a goods office between the booking hut and the shelter.

The sharply curved spur off the loop appears to stop at some kind of wharf or dock, though I am tempted to pass it through the backscene into a siding which can represent a quarry.

Stone was mined locally at several local sites.

Certainly looks like it would require a 14inch shell to destroy it!

Glad to see the 'LACK is BACK' ;)

Just remind me on your projects Chris. There was a nice 2mm one which you scrapped (shame) then you started a N one as an interim and now this one...is this the old baseboard, but with new idea for a 2mmFS layout??

You will nearly have as many projects on the go as me at this rate

Hi Pete.

The N gauge plank served its purpose as a temporary distraction and is up on my shelf - not the Lack one -as finished as it is going to be. I get it out ocasionally to break the monotony of track building using the little N gauge shunter and moving a a few wagons about.

The 2mm one you referred to

which is in the garage sans point motors just has too much wrong with it. The easitrac plastic/ glued points were the main issue.

Each time I thought I'd got them all working one of my engines or wagons would derail passing through. I thought about replacing them with copper clad - I still am as a matter of fact - so I guess you could say I have two 2mm layouts on the go!

I discovered this little Glenfield prototype really in the interim between them, and decided I should start afresh with coppereclad points and something even more modest than Barnwell, which would have been 9 feet in total and too big really for me to handle at present anyway.

Most of my modelling time is spent in building stock and track.

I'm finding it more difficult than I thought to commit to a serious layout at present, so am happy to dabble and experiment.

Mind you, I'm beginning to get a few comments from the memsahib about the boards lying around... :)
