Hello.

For a while now on Wednesday and Friday evenings at the Abingdon & District MRC which I am a member I have been beavering away on an etched kit for a 2mm GWR Toad Brake van. The kit, designed by Chris Higgs for the 2mm Scale Association (kit number 2-598) is a bit fiddly to make with the handrails being particuarly tricky, but it makes a nice little wagon...

It now needs paint, glazing, transfers and couplings to finish it off but I will do that at some point!

Nice. I could use one of those myself, but would be in engineers livery for the period I'm modelling - I gather that they were frowned upon for traffic purposes by the 1970s but seemingly OK for the engineers to use.

Thanks guys.

A nice clean job, though it seems churlish almost to point this out, you seem to have assembled the axleboxes to wrong way up. See, for example, this Paul Bartlett shot: http://paulbartlett....0ef9a#h3850ef9a

Good point Adam! Thank you for spotting that one. I always seem to get axleboxes the wrong way round for some reason, at least it shows that its worthwhile checking prototype pictures when bui8lding something. Anyway they have been soldered on the right way round now.

Nice work Julia!

Have you used the RSU on this?

Andy

Nope. I used my trusty 25w Antex on it. I still havent sat down and figured out how to use the RSU yet but I do now have 10 Stephen Harris 16t mineral wagons to build at some point!

Well it would be a shame for you not to build something I have/am going to Andy! Go on, do it!

So, tell us, how did you make the handrails with their one piece appearance? I've only made the early style vans so far and they have the handrails in 4 separate pieces. I was thinking of doing them in two pieces and hiding the joint at the handrail knob. (That is when I get around to building the rest!)

Hi Rich.

I made the handrails as you mentioned using two pieces of Brass wire and joining the ends at a handrail knob. Each piece of wire was bent into a 'C' section and threaded through the handrail knobs then soldered in place.

That Toad looks really good! I always look forward to seeing the progress you're making on Highclere, it is quite inspirational
