A few photographs of some SNCF types that I managed to grab in Paris last week

A slightly different posting for a change... back along the lines of my earlier prototype blog entries that I went and stuck in my Workbench blog entries (sorry)... this time of some variable quality pictures I was able to grab with my 9 year old Cannon Powershot G2 whilst on Holiday in Paris with the family. My previous (business) trips have always involved use of the metro only, so this time, being further out necessitated use of the RER... which brought us into contact with more rail traffic... including that emanating from Gare d’Austerlitz.

Most of the images are of the RER services (RER C) that we used every day... along with a few of the express services that flew through Vitre-Sur-Seine whilst we awaited our RER service, including one of my youngest waiting to film some of the local services.

First shot from the Eurostar window as we approached Gare Du Nord – these look smart, I’ve no idea what these are (apologies for the quality - grabbed on the phone).

A selection of shots from Vitre-Sur-Seine... again, the quality isn't brilliant, the light always being in the wrong place didn't help!

and a tram - Line 3.

What on earth must the ride be like in these carriages!?!

And finally... pushing the limits of handheld exposures awaiting the train home – these were about 0.3 seconds at f8.0 (the narrowest the camera goes to)... but the results seem ok.

So, that’s it. Some shots were better than others – and I found the limits of the old camera; next time I’ll take the D-SLR and try harder. It was a nice holiday.

Hope that some can explain some of the above... it was nice to see loco hauled passenger services running through... and the woosh from the coaches at speed was wonderful!

Thanks for reading

Jon

After reading your blog title, I was a tad disappointed to find pictures of trains Jon (LoL in absence of smiley)

Glad you had a nice holiday and these are a nice collection of images - thanks for sharing them.

I do like the last two 'front ends' shots...The Eurostar design still has something magical about it for me...

Pete, hi. Yes, it was only after I'd noticed the loco-hauled expresses whilst stood awaiting the RERs (that were every 15 minutes) that I thought about getting the camera out - glad that I did - just wish I'd taken the better (but bulkier) camera. The Eurostar shots were taken after we finally got a seat in the lounge (after the earlier train boarded)... and I noticed the nice juxtaposition of nose ends... so tried to capture this (artistically of course). To get all in focus, I pushed it right out on Av priority and kept the ISO down too... to avoid grain, and leant the camera on the seat arm and window - results were ok... and yes there is still simething about the front end of the class 373... especially now theat they are showing signs of age; a classic of toay! Gald I got these shots expecially. Interesting to compare with the TGV and Thales in the background... although the "Thales" is only just visible in these shots.

The first shot is of one of the new 'Transilien' units designed for use within the Greater Paris area.

The apparently four-wheeled coach in the carriage sidings is the generator van from the Talgo variable-gauge sleeper train which runs between Austerlitz and Barcelona- the other vehicles in the train are articulated, with a single-axle 'bogie' at one end only.

The various grey locos previously carried the 'En Voyages' livery, which SNCF hurriedly abandoned, possibly because of licencing difficulties. The services would have been to Orleans and beyond, possibly to Toulouse and even Perpignan.

The red and grey TGVs are 'Thalys'; Thales are a French-owned firm which took over parts of BR's Telecommunications business.

Brian.... as yes Thalys.... they've got that written on the side haven't they - oops! yes, I know Thales! A number of the express had "Tours" written on the coaches - I guessed this was their destination - but couldn't read all. The white coaches looked like sleepers - thanks. I was surprised to see the complete articulated set sat in the sidings near Issy-sur-seine most days.

Thanks on the SNCF livery - I think Silver suited them!
