GC long car painted and I Materialise Prime Grey Gateshead body.

I've managed to find time to prep and paint the GC car, as the Prime Grey material is a resin, preparation is vey easy, fronts needed a bit of filling and sanding but very little in comparison with either frosted detail or WSF.

Sides needed priming and a brush over with a fibreglass pencil, then BR totem plates added from 10 thou plasticard, and yess they did bend them over the beading on the real thing, looking pretty rough. Totems and nos by Fox. Inside is sprayed a mid brown, glazing to be added. Headlights from brass tube and filler, lens still to be applied

Chassis is well under way using a rigid Halling E mech, which features two flywheel fitted motors each driving a truck by uj..

Overall, I'm happy with it, I'll be building at least another three, anyone want a G and I layout for their exhibition, 2012/3 on!!?

I've also received the first of the Gatesheads in PG, again, I prefer it to Shapeways materials, I had a Gateshead in FD and it's nowhere near as good as the PG one, the Frosted detail one is now destined to become the works car with double sliding doors.

I must admit that looks rather good. Is the cost comparable with Shapeways?

Sort of, PG is a fraction dearer than WSF as a base, but then VAT is added, so about 20% dearer. Carriage is also charged but free on 100+ euro orders.

It's cheaper and smoother than frosted detail, and condsiderably cheaper than FUD, plus the GC car can't be done in FUD because it's too long. It also seems much more stable with less body distortion, although bars across the bodies are now added to stop any distortion when being 'printed'.

If Shapeways don't add a material like this, I'm afraid they'll not get many more orders off me.

I'm also currently toying with model to CAD, I've a number of scratchbuilt models that I'd like to replicate and havbe found a company who will scan the model and produce an STL file ready for printing, not cheap, but another way to do stuff...........
