Vitrains 47787 West Coast

Hellow -

Another vitrains 47 this evening - I do like them.

blogentry-6893-0-01242400-1320089963_thumb.jpg

Unlike 'Brunel' in my previous entry there's less so do on 787. Out of the box The model has the correct tanks, aerial brackets , plus 'Flush' headcodes both ends - and the more modern style 'Crewe' LED cluster tail lights, so some nice attention to detail differences by vitrains. There's printed representations of the plates left over when the TDM fittings were removed from the cab fronts. On the real thing these little plates barely stand that proud from the bodywork - so the printed versions seem acceptable - its nice that vitrains spotted them.

There's still lots of little jobs to make 787 a nice little project - mainly detail painting

The cabside handrails - I cant remember what colour they were supplied but I had to spray them maroon (for the loco in pre named condition).

The little vertical handrails on the cabfronts were supplied yellow and needed the lower half sprayed maroon, also the little steps that slot into the bottom edge of the cabfront were also sprayed maroon, as they were supplied black. While I was painting I sprayed one of the radiator slats red , as spotted on the real loco. Finally the roof panels above the engine room were painted with a mix of executive light grey and NSE white.

I have fitted shawplans super fine new roof fans and grilles , and added the extra cross feed pipework that this particular loco carries .

For this loco I tried out some etched windscreen frames - the originals were carefully sanded off , and the new frames secured with varnish - the maroon was touched up using a mix of EWS maroon and a spot of red oxide to match the Vitrains colour. The etched windscreen frames are something else , with some teeny tiny detail - but really need to be used with shawplans laser cut glazing for full effect . Its not a quick job but well worth it - fr this loco I've fixed the new glazing with Kleer - but used PVA on other locos too - it works just as well.

You need to make your own quaterlight bars for the side windows - I cut up some fine plastic strip using my NWSL 'Chopper' - that made a fiddly little job dead simple . The bars were painted then fixed to the glazing with a spot of PVA: They locate in a little half etched line on the glazing.

And thats pretty much it - as usual I've lowered the loco , fitted nylon aerials and A1 wipers. Bufferbeam bits are a mix of Horbny , with Heljan ETH bits, and some extra associated pipework made from wire. The underframe has some light weathering - though I need to finish this off and weather the bufferbeams. I don't think ill put any weathering on the nice maroon body though - I think It will look better without.

Happy Halloween!

Jon, good to see you actively contributing back on here again. Now that I'm looking at the end of my mamoth deltic project, I'm about to tackle a 47... I have a Bachmann one - one of the older ones in BR Blue - my era, but with the domino headcode (sort of) and this is giving me one of the problems - whether to swap it out for a 4-digit headcode version or completely hack the area out and repalce it with suitable glazing. I have the shawplan laserglaze and frames... and fan grills too... It'll also be rewheeled (to P4) and then there's the tanks and bogies to rework... so it's nice to see you showing us your good work and getting me thinking about the 47 that I have to tackle.

On the other posting, the colour of the yellow on the 47 was said to be "out" and I think that this is one of the failings of the Vi Trains models... physically they llok very good, but just look a little too plastically. However, that's nothing that a little respray shouldn't be able to sort. Yours look good ... please keep the posts coming.

Hi Jon -After your 47 I think you need to buy one of those Heljan Deltics and show us what you can do...

Id be interested so see how you got on with an Italian 47 , as its a very different bit of kit to the Bachmann model in many respects.

In P4 the vitrains model is a lot more sure footed than Bachmanns , as it has a floating (but lightly sprung) centre axle - so for that reason I've standardised on vitrains 47s. I've had a couple of Bachmann versions and all have rocked on the centre wheelsets and took a dive off my trackwork. For the post 1998 shade of warning yellow Vitrains is ok - but its a bit too light for earlier warning yellow. If your doing a full respray the vitrains model is interesting - as its the only loco (I can think of) that uses a pure white bodyshell, and doesn't go soft or develop a frosty surface when you dunk it in superstrip like bachmanns plastic sometimes does. The Vitrains paint strips off very easily and leaves a really shiny hard white plastic shell - so lighter colours come out much better and need less paint to cover - warning panels for example. The only down side is putting white primer on a white shell - its really difficult to tell if you've hit the target!

Hi Jon, nope... I'm not going to tackle a Heljan 55. I'd hoped that it would be worth working but having now seen one in the flesh, I think that it's got too much to do to really be worth tackling. I think I'll be sticking with 4mm. Hopefully the DP2 won't have the same mistakes... we'll see. Thanks for the 47 advice. Maybe I should look at the ViT 47 in BR blue and see what I can do with that... although I've the Bach 47 and bits now, and I don't intend a big P4 layout so the rocking may not be too much of a problem.

I think that I might be avioding complete resprays for a while - they're quite hard work. Thanks for the advice.

Hopefully I'll be back modelling soon ... hopefully my dicky tummy will have cleared up by then.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your advice in the other thread regarding lowering. Ive always bent the pins down to lower the model, but will give your method a try. The vi trains 47s are nice to work with ill definatley be getting more, despite me owning a Bachmann model.

Hi Jon,

Nice work on the 47s I have a Vi 47401 which I am planning on renumbering and although I do like my Bachmann 47s the Vi one does look good though the gap between the body and bogies is too big. I am thinking of trying your method but I am wondering if lowering the body makes the loco sit to low.

Hi Jon020,

I have done some work on the underframes on my Bachmann 47 though probably not to your standard, it would be a good starting point for yours though, let me know if you want some pics. The centre wheels do sit a bit lower on some Bachmann models which causes them to rock a bit, you can file out the plastic a bit I fixed my class 37 this way, though P4 is another thing.

 love the Halloween Tangerine.

Cheers Peter.

Peter,

Some pics would be a good start.. thanks. No rush got this 55 to finish off first and budget cuts may postpone chipping unless i can increase the deficite a bit more... getting the body off is a bitmore than 6 screws now (4chains and 8shackles)... also may re-body - but yes resolving the bogie rock would be useful... thanks.

Any advice on gogie height lowering would be useful as I've not done much dismantling except for Sound chipping so far.

Thanks ... Jon
