Getting the APA boxes together has given me a better idea of what space is available, both within the boxes and in the space where they will reside when not in use!

There will have to be a few re-thinks. I was originally going to have a seperate fiddleyard attached to the end of the boxes, but the space for the boxes is absolutley filled by the boxes and there isn't really going to be space to store a seperate fiddleyard, whatever there is will have to be contained and self-contained within. This will require knocking some more holes into the boxes so I want to be sure before I start doing that! a full-size plan will be in order I think.

Another thing was trying the space out with the points I'd already started and bits of rolling stock- the plan I had in mind doesnt look like its going to fit, or not without looking cramped in anycase. It seems that halving dimensions from 4mm plans does not quite work out!

At least I know that if all else fails, a 'border byway' will still fit in even with both those changes in conditions! ;)

I tend to use 3/4, i.e. 3mm for every 4mm. This helps create the open feel which is a big benefit in my mind of 2mm. Realistic point geomety in N or 2mm results in trackwork much larger than half of OO in my experience.

There is an extra 8ft between the points and the crossing for a start plus the extra caused by the shallower crossing angle. Also the EM point will be fractionally undersized as the gauge is not to scale. It all adds up.

Plan books used to say this in them (at least the C J Freezer one that I read until it fell to bits as a youth did) as a note about reducing the OO plans. OO has 3.5mm track so somewhere between 2/3 to 3/4 is realistic.

A full size plan will help a great deal. It was the first thing I did when planning.

I expect that you have already born in mind that the fiddle yard would be quite thin and possibly squeezed up in an area between the two boxes when stored?

What's 4mm? :D

In my case it was EM which is a bit nearer 4mm scale than OO but still not quite!

The boxes will be end on under the stairs - the two boxes permanently joined, It kind of slots into a space between two cupboards, and the top of the box(es) just nicely fits under the stairs, so very little extra room!

Yep- been on with that I'm now giving serious consideration to a rehash of my EM layout in 2mm with all the things I would have done different with hindsight! - though I'll not make it a 'carbon copy' - there will be much more room for scenic depth ( and height!) in a 2mm version :)
