Looks like a J10

Some progress this week; it’s beginning to look a bit like a J10:

The running plate has now received the cab, and with the saddle and the spectacle plate now fixed to the running plate, it is possible to mount the boiler/smokebox/firebox unit in its final position.

For the csb system to work, the body must have a fair weight. The calculations assumed a final weight of 200 grams. Accordingly a ballast weight of 2mm lead sheet was rolled and this is fixed to two tufnol boiler formers and the whole assembly is a push fit into the boiler, with the motor riding in the firebox. With the weight mounted like this it does not act as a heat sink and make any future soldering to the boiler unit a problem.

A few more pics tomorrow if I have time: should be at Wakefield RMS show all day really.

Will you be able to add more weight over the rear axle? Apart from needing weight, the CSB approach usually needs the weight to be fairly evenly distributed.

Nick,

Nice to hear from you.

I have usually arranged for the tender front to transfer weight to the loco but there is some room below the cab for some lead. Also the back-head projected quite deeply into the cab on a J10 so I shall make my back-head casting quite deep which means a big chunk of white metal in the cab too.
