An Electric Scot - Chassis

Good Evening-

work now started on the Class 87 Chassis. The underframe was more or less cut off just leaving the box with the grill on. The parts were re-used from the Original Lima frame and using various tubing and sheeting, the frame was rebuilt to make the model look much better. The end result is worth it IMHO and it certainly improves the overal look of the model and gives the underframe more releif, as the Lima detailing is underscale, two Dimensional, and more suited for H0 guage than 00 in the way its scaled as many components were under-sized; particularly the battery box which is some 2mm short in length. pictures of the underframe will be uploaded soon to this blog entry to show the end effort. Right, that out of the way next job to tackle is the re-motoring.

The Lima motor is a good enough performer, but I want something that is quieter and smoother in performance. Looking on the Railway Centre website, I matched the Wheelbase of the Class 42 Warship to the Class 87 one. so After getting a Warship Chassi from Ebay it was decided to put the components of this into the 87. The ends of the Metal block were cut off and these were put onto the Chassis tray of the Lima moulding. They sit perfectly but a little tight fit. The trouble is though is that the gear tower lugs that pivot, wont reach the mouting points so I can screw it back together, so I think the side frames are mounted too high, or the Chassis ends may just need to be taken out of the equation, im hoping that it might be the frames being to high that might be the problem. My thoughts are also on what to replace the Warship wheels with also, as they are too small

More soon

Check out the clag group`s site, it has all the wheelbase`s and wheelsizes for br diesel and electrics. I don`t know what the lima`s bogie wheelbase is, but the prototypes scales out at 43mm.

Nick,

Having successfully done one of these myself, you need to trim about 1.5mm off the bottom of the springs to get things to behave. If you've got a Hornby 86 underframe moulding to hand, match them to the springs on there. I have a feeling Lima made them taller to allow the model to go round toytown curves.

If it helps, I'll get a pic taken of my chassis and pop it up here for you.... :)

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Tim - thatd be good if you could get a pic, I didnt realise that they were too tall, may do some research this afternoon at some point ... Thanks for the CLAG link Cheesysmith, now found out which wheels will match for this chassis, hopefully get a reply from the Classified section, may borrow a wheelset from my Baccy 47 to see how it looks and if any mods need to be done t oget the wheels to fit

Sure thing Nick - I'll sort it in the morning!

Incidentally, I've got stacks of leftover wheelsets from 37s and even a couple of 47s - all Bachmann. Drop me a PM and we'll take it from there :)
