Welshpool in the Mailbox

blog-0232164001330398237.pngJust a brief followup to the earlier entry---

The first item arrived. A lovely reprint map taken from the Ordnance Survey topographic series (as revised in 1904 and updated in 1912), showing the area in and around Welshpool. Of most interest to me is the information I can glean about the "town route" of the Welshpool and Llanfair eastward from the present W&L station to the Raven Square Station.

Although I do not anticipate modelling (or having room to model) the entire now nonexistent trackage, I would like to include enough Station area and multi gauge area to warrant having a standard gauge GWR goods engine and short goods train stationed at one "end" of my anticipated layout.

The other end will be Llanfair.

The time frame has yet to be determined. I'm considering either 1931 or 1947, with a preference for the former since the W&L would still have had (a little) passenger service, the canal system would have been undamaged, and the most interesting (to me) GWR liveries would have been used.

Now if I could only find a Collett Goods with Churchward tender and a reasonable replica of either "Earl" or "Countess"---

Best Wishes--Carl

Hello Carl

I have a 009 exhibition layout - Green End - which draws inspiration from the Welshpool line.

We run Beyer Peacocks built from the Golden Arrow kit - unfortunately this is no longer available and is as rare as hen's teeth!

I've been researching for a layout of Llanfair Caereinion for too long. I've got over 300 historic photos of the whole railway and a number of drawings and surveys. Unfortunately I'm all archived out and have no enthusiam to build the layout at the moment!

I wish you luck - it's a fantastic little railway. If you haven't got a copy, do get the Wild Swan history of the line - it's a great help in working out the various track changes over the years - particularly at the Welspool yard.

I look forward to following your progress.

Dest wishes

Hello David,

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement.

I was aware of the Golden Arrow kits, but you've confirmed my suspicions about their being scarce. I do have a Langley "Sir Drefaldwyn" on the way--a decision rationalized within the American context of being an acceptable "creative anachronism" (and besides, I've got the correct chassis already).

Thanks also for the description of the Wild Swan reference.

Best Wishes,

Carl
