baseboard #3

Took advantage of the sunny afternoon on Friday whilst the kids were swimming and knocked together my first ply construction baseboard.

I'd salvaged the material from work ages ago and cut it up into a 4ft x 2ft board and then lots of thin strips for the sides. It is 15mm packing case ply and not particularly good quality, but it was free and as it's never going to be subject to a damp garage etc I think it'll be okay

The track I built at the Mansfield show is shown roughly in place - plenty of room at the front of the layout for scenery ;)

Sunday we were sanding the walls in the study again so whilst SWMBO was having lunch I sanded down the filler and made the sides nice and smooth.

I also found a little tin of dark brown matt brown paint that SWMBO had bought for 50p ages ago - result :)

Looking very good Redgate. I've just made my first two 4' x 2' boards a'la Barry Norman; ply with pine squares sandwiched in between. 4mm ply though and a slight warp or bend as not all my cuts are quite square, sadly. I'm going to replace the ends of the ply frames with solid, accurately cut 3" x 1" and see what happens then. Yours are lovely and substantial - giving me inspiration to keep persevering.

The beauty of the 15mm ply is no softwood corners were needed, it's heavy though, almost as heavy as 2x1 framing with 6mm ply top .....
