Roxey Summers Iron Ore Hopper part 7 - Hopper 3.

Today I had a few hours to myself free from distraction, so I soldered up the hopper body.

The hopper floor is too wide by approx 1mm, so I scribed a line 1mm from the edge, and cut just inside the waste thereby leaving a little material to be removed with a file after the ends are tacked in place. I used a pair of snips, in this case Draper Expert Jewellery Snips, which can just be seen in the second photo. These are very reasonably priced (about £9) and are well suited to brass work.

In the photo below the nearest floor section has been trimmed and the furthest section is uncut;

And soldered up, placed on the chassis;

The soldering looks a little rough at the moment, but I'll clean it up later when the internal dividers are in place to give the assembly more strength.

At every stage the assembly was checked, checked and checked again with a square.

When I soldered the body together I worked one corner at a time to keep the heat down and hopefully prevent distortion, splitting each corner into two sections, top and bottom; floor to side, top corner end 1, opposite top corner end 2, other top corner end 1 then end 2, bottom corner end 1 and so on.

I used 188 degree solder and my 25w Antex on all joints.

Next job is to solder the internal dividers in place and then clean up the joints.

At £36 a kit that would be a very expensive train to recreate Michael!

More work done today Rich, internal dividers now in place.

Michael,

At the top of the page, under the dark blue part, you'll see;

RMWeb - Community Blog - halfwit's Wondrous Wagons! - Roxey Iron Ore Hopper etc.

Click on 'halfwits Wondrous Wagons!'

This should show a list of the entries in this blog.

On the top right hand side click on the 'Follow this blog' box.

That should do the trick, if it doesn't let Andy know!

Hi Paul,

Sounds good progressing well chap:) luckilly i'm not modelling the john summers ore hoppers its the Tunstead run i'm doing Michael with resin and etched hoppers which yes had a lot of wagons in tow but i saw it once at Hazel Grove with just seven wagons and two 37's! So could model that one but i'll build them up over time, i'll probably have a decent rake before those rtr ones are even going in to production! lol
