A concept emerges

John and I have been bouncing some ideas around and I've sketched out a possible layout concept. Effectively two dioramas, one of the station itself and one containing the viaduct. As if this is not enough, John has proposed making the join between them adaptable, FREMO-style, so that additional scenic sections could be added at a later date. Well, let's see how it goes with just this for the moment!

Meanwhile I've ordered some 25-inch OS map copies from West Sussex County Council archives, and we will hopefully be off on a field visit in about three weeks to, well, visit the site in the field cool.gif .

The viaduct we have is 14 arches, as against the 37 of the real one, so it will be an impression rather than a full reproduction (it's still nearly 8 ft long as it is).

Once I have the maps it will be time to fire up Templot again and we can scare ourselves as to how long the layout is going to end up. And if we want to run a 12-coach PUL/PAN formation (as we do wink.gif ) the fiddle yards will need to be 12 ft long as well - each end. Either that or the fiddle yard operators will have to be very very quick, Gromit-like, in receiving and sending out trains!

Big! I like the ideas, but the space required is frightening.

Then again, I want to do a tailchaser layout (I get really annoyed by units that have headcodes at the back - but maybe that's just me), and even for a limited selection of more recent West Coastway trains and only 4 car units I'm still going to end up with at least 12 feet of length (to hold enough different units in the storage), maybe more if they won't go round the trainset curves I plan to use. So, if you can handle that size, may the volts be with you - when push comes to shove I'd much rather see more southern electric and avert my eyes from the rear views.

Good luck!

Thanks Ken biggrin.gif

I agree about headcodes, something we will need to address carefully. There was a topic on the old site about working roller blinds in 4mm but I'm not sure we will go to quite those lengths.

Obviously with a total scenic length of around 25-30ft and 12ft fiddle yards each end ohmy.gif (if we want decent length trains) it's not going to be permanently housed anywhere and may only come out in full at exhibition - assuming we get that far!

Intriguing. I had a ramble past the viaduct a few years ago - you could climb up into the central arches and look down the middle of the whole thing - its an incredible structure. The valley drops a great deal more than it does on your 'found' version but I think with the extra fiddly bits it should pass muster. Go south from here and you can make your fiddle yard entry look like the junction at Copyhold! If you are going for a site visit you must use the footpath over the line just south of Balcombe and if you walk north from the viaduct on the east side of the line [another footpath I believe] you can just make out an intermediate signal box or certainly the remains of from the first overbridge... Depending on the time of year you model it you may have to take shares out in etched bracken.
