Colwyn Bay Goods, a Reintroduction.

Introduction

My name is Bryn and I've decided to build a layout for the 2mm Association's golden jubilee challenge, based around the goods yard at Colwyn Bay. What started as a shunting plank has now grown into a full layout, thanks to the competition. With the sheer luck of; the new Farish 24 and TTAs, new etched 2FS 16T minerals and cheaper DDC systems, it looks like this might be possible after all.

The Prototype

The goods yard at Colwyn Bay was built in the early part of the 20th century and remained in service until the early 1980s. I plan to model the yard towards the end of its life, with the coal and oil deliveries still making a regular showing. The goods shed has been separated from the railway and it's through road lifted. The shed was then a privately owned property.

The coal yard at this time was still taking deliveries by means of standard mineral wagons and the oil via TTA tank formations. The majority of these trains were headed up by class 24s and 25s.

To give you a rough idea, please take a look at a link to the excellent 2D53;

Track work

At a first glance this seemed to be nice simple track plan, until I released I required a 3 way point. Oh well, in fro a penny - in for a pound. Experiments were first carried out using PCB sleeps and code 40 bullhead rail, this successfully proved it was possible to construct these turnouts.

As time passed, plastic track bases were developed by the 2mm Association (www.2mm.org.uk) and this was a much improved system.

Just as everything was going so well, I had to go damage the 3 way point. Work is now on hold as I have decided to rebuild it with a 1in5 centre frog and cast brass chairs for switch rail support. Sadly these parts are not available yet, so we will see how it goes.

.... typical.

The only words I can think of...are unacceptable on the forum ;)

Keep at it - there are always ups and downs with this hobby - am sure you will bounce back soon.

Hi Bryn,

Very interested to see you constructing a 3-way using Easitrac for this layout. I would really like a 3-way for my layout (Harpers Road) although I'm going to be using Peco Code 55 so may not be a good match. I couldn't find anything on the 2mm Finescale website concerning 3-way points. I'd be most grateful if you could give me some pointers as to plans, parts required, costs, etc.

Regards,

Peter

Peter,

I'm sure someone has released a ready to run 3 way in N gauge. I can't be sure who makes it, but I've seen them used in the past. I would suggest asking in the Q&A section of the forum. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi Bryn,

Have you done any of the 2FS Plate underframes?

2-378 15' BR Style 8 Shoe Fitted Underframe for Peco Plate Wagon

If so - any photos?

Just the chassis would be ideal as it's not going under a Peco Plate wagon!

Thanks
