Selected BRB diagram books index.

Hello.

Something that I have been doing for myself is building an index of the contents of the BRB diagram books on the Barrowmore Model Railway Group website.

My main interest is wagons, so that is where I have started. So far I have indexed books 300 (part 1), 320 (parts 1-3) and PO Stock (parts 1-3).

This was done with the thought of kit building, kit bashing or scratch building stock from common components e.g. if I have a particular underframe available then what can I put on top of it? Can I build something a bit different with the pieces I have or can obtain? etc.

I'm not aware of any similar index, apart from the pages in some of the books themselves, but I'm sure someone will point out if I am following a path previously travelled.

Any errors in the transcription are all mine although I cannot guarantee that the data they point to is correct :-) The usual statements about working from photographs of the chosen prototype etc. apply. If anything doesn't seem right, it should be fairly simple to verify whether the discrepancy is in the index or not. I'm happy to receive error reports with respect to the file that I have created.

There is some duplication of diagrams, but being an index if there are multiple destinations then there probably should be multiple entries.

Perhaps this will be of some use to others,

David.

Addendum: Updated the Index with additional entries.

Hi David,

A potentially useful and interesting piece of work. A couple of points though. The use of format 1/108 and BR 108 (for example) can in some cases lead to duplication while in others will give additional vehicle types. I think that it may be better to standardise on one version or the other.

The second point is, what happened to the vans?

Well done anyway, quite a task!

Sir

That must have taken many hours of work.

Thankyou for making the effort.

It should give me many happy hours of 'entertainment' over the next few weeks.

Hello David.

Thank you for the compliment.

I went with what was written on the pages. To quote your example, some pages state 1/108, others state BR 108. I didn't want to make assumptions. Besides, the filter tool can handle multiple answers (1/108 or BR 108) or even "contains 108" should do it.

Even if I did that (for the BR and PO diagrams) not sure how I would handle the pre-nationalisation stuff, unless that was left as-is.

The second point is, what happened to the vans?

Don't know. Haven't found any in these books yet, other than the international stock. I was looking for the V*A series myself. Perhaps that book is not available online, although it would be a shame if that were the case.

Hope this helps,

David.

No problem. I'm actually one of these people that quite enjoys doing that sort of thing :-)

You do pick up a few things doing this, such as the ex-LNER stock (diagrams) tending to have 3'1" wheels rather than what seems to be the more standard 3'1½" wheels.

Not sure how many hours it has taken thus far; in reality the most time consuming thing was providing the Imperial conversions. I'm a metric person myself, but realise that many people (and quite a few of these designs) will have come from the Imperial age, and some of the measurements will make a lot more sense in feet and inches rather than mm (conversely, a number of the designs are clearly metric in origin and the Imperial conversions are a bit strange, if not unnecessary).

Some of the components may only be supplied in Imperial units as well. Does anyone sell 952mm wheelsets, or would they generally be known as 3'1½" wheels, for example.

Hope this helps,

David.
