Vi Trains 47 to P4

So I have finally given in and brought a Vi Trains class 47:

Going to need a fair bit of work still (need to carefully sand down the intercity logo & stripes then prime and spray the sides/ends GWT Green. I think it also needs to have the marker lights at one end changing to match my chosen prototype. 47813 SS Great Britain in Great Western Trains green. What I am planning to do is mask off the roof/yellow to spray the green (hopefully at the weekend weather permitting), then respray the yellow (after filling in the random hole to the right of the High Intensity headlight.

I've spent some time today fitting all of the details (which I probably shouldnt have done), my original intention was just to fit the details and then sell on the model to fund buying one with the buffer beam cowling (ie something thats actually needed) but instead I am thinking that I will sell my Heljan 47830 in GWT and replace it with this model of 813...

Other than the lamp irons on the buffers (which just refused to stick) everything came together pretty well. Unfortunately the break gear was broken on arrival so going to need to contact Vi Trains to try and get a replacement....

Once all the body stuff (bar the painting of course) had been finished I moved onto the chassis, Given Vi Trains pickup design P4 conversion looked like it would be a little tricky, but after some careful bending of the pickup wires I think its ok. Had a problem originally where the pickups were both touching the axle...

It was rewheeled with Keen Maygib 14.5mm coach wheels and the Vi Trains gears using the usual method, the gears were a little loose on the axle so were secured with locktight. For a bit of added safety the axle was wrapped in electrical tape near to the pickups to prevent shorts.

Very Very impressed with the chassis design, had not realised that it had a sprung centre axle!

That should look nice in the GWT I reckon. The Vitrains model is nice, and prices are slowly coming down I think. I've got one of the Blue 47600 in the post, and I'll probably pick up Great Eastern at Warley, they'll both change from original but no prototype has been settled on yet. I'll probably have to put up with 14mil branchlines though for the time being, couldn't fault them on my Vi 37s.

While I would have prefered to use the 'Branchlines' wheels, given that they have better pickup and dont have the little holes in them (which risk catching on the pickups). According to my data a 47 should have a 15mm diameter wheel in 4mm scale, so the 14.5mm Maygibs are pretty close to scale (where as the 14mm branchlines might look a tad on the small side.)

I'm definitely going to be on the look out for more 2nd hand, though it does look like the blue releases are holding value a lot better than the sector liveries.

Really need to add at least one in Intercity Exec, one in Railfright grey and probably one in blue. Not to mention needing a couple more with the cowling to do the Blue Pullman pair......

I know what you mean about the wheel sizes, I've seen a few HJ duffs on branchlines 14mils and they do look a little low but not too bad. The cheapest retailer I've found for the Vi duffs appears to gaugemaster taking P&P into account they do offer a free service and a next day at 4.95.?

The 2nd hand prices are down to around ?? 35-40 now, and hattons have been doing the Intercity and RES releases for ??52 new recently.

I had hoped that the original release in large logo with the iffy yellow ends would have hit the bargain bin as well, but it looks like all of the blue releases so far have sold very well annoyingly!

Blimey I'm looking in the wrong place then, ebay they're still hitting the ??50 mark. Have you had a look at the grey freightliner model yet? The class47 website says it never carried the number 47730, so I'm hoping the model should still be a 47/4 version (as she was 47575 previous)

the Freightliner one is 47370, and sadly has the cut away buffer beam :(

One ebay try different spellings of Vi Trains when you search, theres often a load that are miss listed and hence get less views (And lower prices) (though I probably shouldnt have said that :P)

As an aside with this, I'm sure Brian wont mind the extra publicity, but I've just found out that Shawplan are about to release a new 47 roof grill (along with some simply awesome class 56 bits that are shown in the latest Rail Express). the 47 grill will be rather handy for improving the Vi 47 that little bit further!

Seriously considering picking up a couple of cheap limby ones in Blue Pullman Fraggonset now for a bit of detailing to cheaply finish off my Blue Pullman rake, given the new etches, along with some old fashioned detailing I think it can be brought up to scratch without having to mess about respraying!

Cheers for the info on 370. I have 4 different searches for Vi stuff on ebay much like yourself, picked up a 37 last week for ??28.

I get to see Brian every now and again when he pops into our P4soc night, we tend to get the sneaky view of new bits.?
