The Signalman's new bicycle

Archibald Freeth, "Archie" to his friends is one of the signalmen who works Sherton Abbas signal box. He resides in the small town of Ivell about 4 miles from Sherton Abbas and has recently invested in a bicycle. He's a fairly frugal chap and put off by the prices of the latest models on the market decided to buy something second hand. After much searching he found something suitable which although nearly 15 years old had been well looked after and was best of all reasonably cheap! His commute to work used to take him well over an hour, but with his new trusty steed the journey time is now under 20 minutes.

Description This bicycle contains several improvements patented by Mr G Singer in 1888 including a stage in the development of the diamond frame and was made by Mesrs Singer & Co. The frame has a tube extending from the steering head to the middle of a curved down-tube from the saddle to the crank bracket. The wheels, which are 30 inches in diameter, have radial spokes and are fitted with wired-on cushion tyres. It bears many similarities to modern bicycle.

Well so much for the fantasy, the truth is of course that I saw this little etched brass kit at a recent show and couldn't resist buying it!

The kit goes together very well but is certainly fiddly and fairly finger singeing at times! I used a combination of Carrs solder paste and a mini flame to fix the components together, using stainless steel tweezers to hold the parts in correct alignment.

The brass was then cleaned with a fibreglass brush, washed and then coated with aerosol primer from Halfords and allowed to dry.

The model was finished off using enamel paints from both Humbrol and Railmatch. The bicycle frame is in painted in Indian Red, I'm sure it's no coincidence that it's exactly the same shade of red as the locomotive frames or the fact that "Archie" has a friend who works as a painter at Swindon works!

I've placed the bicycle underneath the signal box steps where it waits for Archie to make his return journey home after his shift.

I was never entirely happy with the signal box roof and after Simon mentioned it didn't quite cut the mustard I resolved to revisit it at some stage. Well I'm pleased to say I've finally got round to it and fabricated a new roof that much better matches the other buildings on the layout! I've also had a go at repainting the brickwork, The mortar is now darker and the bricks more weathered than before which I think suits a building placed so close to the track work.

I'll finish off with a couple of pictures of the box resplendent with its new roof and basking in the evening sunshine :-)

Very nice. Do you intend to do a "Dave Rowe" and add spokes made from hair?

(Coat on as I head for the door...)

Lol! I thought about adding a chain, but I think spokes may be a step too far :-)

Simon beat me to it!  After all that splendid work, it really needs the finishing touch :)  Seriously, though, I am impressed and the signal box looks very good too.  Now, what are you going to do with the other bicycle on the fret.

Very nice Dave.  The 'box looks excellent too.  I particularly like the toned down point rodding - when I finish all of mine I will try to do similar.

Thanks Mike, glad you like it:-). I think the other bike will be placed leaning against the platform fence once I get round to building it!

Very nice. I do like little touches like that.Kind regards, Nick.
Thanks Nick, I must admit adding all the little details are my favourite bit too!

Thanks Ian, glad you like the toned down rodding. It all looked a bit too clean and stark before and I'm sure even Mikkel would allow for a little bit of Edwardian grime here and there! :-)

Glad you re-made the roof: it really does look better for it.

Hi Dave, oh allright then, grime is good :-)

I like the green algae look on the boarding over the point rodding. Nice subtle effect.

The bike is a little wonder of its own, both model and prototype. Have you seen the military version, a little unsettling! See: http://www.oldbike.eu/museum/bikes-1800s/1869-1891-velocipedes-dwarf-safeties/1888-the-singer-safety-semi-diamond-cross-frame/ (scroll down)

Hi Mikkel, thanks for that link I hadn't heard of the military version! I do hope the weapon was designed to be removed from the bike before firing, I imagine the recoil would play havoc with the steering! :-). Isn't it great how this hobby of ours sends us down such interesting byways!

Certainly is. I suppose those military bikes give a new meaning to the term "riding shotgun". Argh, sorry!

Hi Simon, glad you approve:-)  It just goes to show we all need a little nudge now and then to keep up our modelling standards, it serves me right for trying to cut corners!

I must admit I'm much happier with it now :-)

Glad to have nudged you, then - it would only have rankled.

That bicycle is exquisite, I like the back story too.

Your signal box looks more Great Westernised with the new roof too, something vaguely reminiscent of a contractor built box on a faraway branch line in a remote corner or the GW empire, reminds me of a photo of one of the Cornish branch lines but I can't quite put my finger on which one. So definitely effective! Plus it looks distinctively different to the out of the box Peco original.
