Whiskey boxes

Job's Modelling

For the interior of the warehouse I wanted some (whiskey) barrels and crates.

Basic information I found on the very useful http://www.igg.org.uk/gansg/00-app1/common.htm

After reading this basic information my research on the internet began.

Then I discoverd that whiskey also was shippen in whiskey boxes. Mostly with the name of the distelery on top of it.

With the pictures I found there were also sizes metioned.

17 x 14¾ x8½ inch is in 4mm : 5,6 x 4,9 x 2,8 mm.

22½ x 15½ x 7 inch is in 4 mm: 7,5 x 5,1 x 2,3 mm

16 x 12 x 12 inch ( a box from 1962) is in 4 mm: 5,3 x 4 x 4 mm

15 x 11 x 13 inch ( a box from 1954) is in 4 mm: 5 x 3,6 x 4,3 mm

17 x 11 x 5/8 inch ( a Black and White box from 1955) is in 4 mm: 5,6 x 3,6 x 2 mm

I also found some pictures of a box photographed from different sides. I used this pictures to create sides in O gauge in publisher. The sizes I only used as a refference depending on the thickness of the card I had available.

So I created my own “whiskey box” kit. And build some of these for free standing use in O scale.

I scaled that one down to 00 gauge to creat my ‘whiskey box’ card kit. Black and White whiskey box 1955.pdf

Then I started to create the whiskey boxes in OO gauge. See the pictures below.

I believe I can improve my building of very small items. But the whisley boxes work out well on in the diorama for me. Most viewers will have a global look and not the detailed look from the digital camara.

The whiskey boxes on the Jens truck have some other advantage. Because they are much lighter of color the immediately aske the attention of the viewer to the delivery scene in front of the warehouse. Below a picture without and with the boxes.

For the whiskey crates against the wall I used I different approach. I will explain that in an other entrie.

Regards,

Job

1/ Whisky has no 'e' (except in Ireland)

2/ Whisky barrels were used for ageing the spirits and transporting the from the distilleries to bottling plant and/or blenders. Boxes were used for distributing spirits to retail customers, so it would be very unlikely that both whisky barrels and boxes would be seen in the same place and time.

3/ When transported by rail, consignments of spirits were carried in bonded, i.e. lock and sealed by customs, vans.

4/ The chances of boxes of whisky reaching their final destination while being transported on a open lorry, as you have shown, I suggest would be low to zero.

Thanks for the comment:

I have learned something to day. As a Dutch guy I use the word control of Windows. I know that could be tricky sometimes.

Thanks for the information. Will save that. Because this is a Wine and Spirit Merchant I believe barrels (wine or port) and whisky boxes in the warehouse could be possible.

Point 3 and 4 I didn't know. The text on the boxes isn't readable in OO gauge from a distance. So for this time I will leave the boxes were they are (glued on).

Most visitors who see the diorama will not be aware of the practice of transporting whisky. And the effect is really good.

I think it would have been possible for whisky to have been delivered in cask as blending and bottling was often undertaken by individual merchants and as this is not a bonded warehouse it could have been carried freely although point about light fingered locals is very valid. I use to be in the wine trade and remember a case where the staff of a shop were unloading a truck on one side while the locals had cut through the curtain on the other side and were helping themselves!

It makes a great scene though.

Job regardless, its still some brilliant modelling, as I have a liking of "holy water" (only the Irish kind) I find it very difficult to keep it in the bottle never mind the crate or barrel

I also like sometimes a nice wisk(e)y. I never payed attention to the way you write it, I just enjoy it. Although I prefer a single malt.

Smashing modelling Job.

On the subject of defeating light fingered locals, Players cigarettes were shipped in containers like the Bachmann one that were then loaded into five plank wagons at Nottingham goods depot so the doors couldn't be opened.

Hi Job, many thanks for this very useful demo of how to make small boxes. As mentioned before, I will definetely try this for my goods depot (got 50 margarine boxes to do!).

The effect of the lettering makes a huge difference and is very convincing. And as you say, the boxes look very good when mixed with darker more heavy barrels/goods. A very nice scene, I think.

I agree, I also like whisky both with and without the e :-)

Couldn't care less about the 'e' or not - the Whiskey boxes are fantastic and thanks for sharing the file.  Definitely be using your method to create crates in the future.

Great stuff.

Because you want to use this method for creating crates I have edit my entry with the tools I used for the boxes. I don't know how to get the picture in this comment.

The most helpful is the dentist tool in the midst. I used it as a helping hand for folding the paper around the card.

I also embossed with an empty ballpoint the folding lines before folding.

Thanks for the compliment.
