Paxton Road in print...

For those of you who are not subscribers to Traction and haven't seen the 2010/2011 annual I'm pleased to share that Paxton Road is the 'modelling' feature in this years publication. I was chuffed to bits when Richard asked me to write a few words and take some photos for the annual. On top of the modelling mini-section there are a whole host of 'classic' traction articles spanning the decades - all of which I found a good read and of particular interest is the Cornish China Clay branch

Lazy hazy afternoons...

You know it was one of those lazy afternoons - the sun gently warming and the light pleasantly hazy... the gentle rumble of the EE 350hp unit thrumming away letting you know that despite appearances some movement was afoot. 09007 is a modified Bachmann model. I've made some good progress on Paxton Road in the last fortnight but until the forum thumbnail issue is sorted I'll point you in the direction of my blogger blog for your image fix! I've taken a few of the new fence and the ground

Progress, and lots of it!

I visited DEMU Showcase over the weekend and found myself both inspired and over-awed with the quality and scale of a number of the layouts there. It was a great show and re-ignited my enthusiasm to get something finished and fit to 'run' so to speak. On top of that I've promised Richard at Traction an article on the finished layout and some exclusive photos - so that's motivation too!   So what have I been up to? Well the warehouse is glued down and the ballasting has been finished. For the

BMX down at Paxton Road...

I'd forgotten how much fun it is riding a BMX...   Down at Paxton Road today 37013 had arrived from Didcot.   So of course I've not actually ridden my BMX for over 5 years! But I've been tinkering on Paxton Road this evening. After my experiment with Carr's Steel Blackening on Nickel Silver rail I applied it to the rails on Paxton Road. A worthwhile transformation? I'll let you make your mind up - I think it's worth it - it definitely takes the golden tinge off the rail surface.

Today, 10 years ago...

Things have been quiet up at Paxton Road recently. Just mundane 66s working in and out of Worthy Down.   Whilst digging through a box of old photos I found this shot, taken roughly 10 years ago in 2000. 37013 had just arrived with the MOD vans from Didcot and was preparing to shunt them into the MOD sidings.     How times change - but surprisingly the venerable EE Type 3's live on with DRS and Network Rail (along with WCRC too). What will we remember in 10 years time? Perhaps it is wort

Another celebrity today...

Twice this month - celebrity visits to Paxton Road! Had a tip off that it might be worth heading down, so nipped out over lunch.   However I expect 33108 wasn't happy to be there - dumped by 33202 earlier in the day she's failed and waiting collection. Arriving at Paxton Road I grabbed a few shots from the road bridge before walking down to the yard and looking for someone to ask permission to grab a few snaps.       After I'd been given the nod (and a high vis) I grabbed a few shots f

Cold crisp mornings on Paxton Road

I'd heard via a reliable source that celebrity green 37411 was on the bi-weekly Didcot - Worthy Down MOD working this morning so on my way out grabbed my camera...   I was glad I did as I managed to grab a few detail shots that might help anyone modelling a 37 based on the Bachmann model Just a light load today - traffic really seems to be dwindling, and in the 7 years since I last made the trip down we find just a solitary VKA making up todays load and a VDA down in the headshunt.

Back up blog?

I've launched my own Blogger blog, to complement RM Web and to provide sollace for those dark days when internet gremlins make the forum un-available...   Don't panic - I'm going to keep my blogs up to date on here with modelling progress. The external blog has feeds from the RMWeb blogs anyway... This will just give me somewhere to post other ramblings and have a play where I've a little more control over how the site looks Add it to your favourites!

The mainline 09...

I've been keeping this one a secret for nearly 6 months... Ever since members day in the summer I've worked on this model and finally this month I can show you guys on here how I created it! Not until the next issue of Model Rail is out though so for now enjoy this teaser snap taken on Paxton Road on a summers day in 1998. 09007 shunts the MOD vans whilst 33019 brings in some wagons for a weekend possession on the mainline.   Keep your eyes peeled on my Workbench thread between Christmas a

Today at Paxton Road...

I took a trip down to Paxton Road today as I heard that an EWS 37/4 was on the MOD job - a rarity these days. Mid morning saw the feeder service from the hub at Didcot arrive behind a battered 37411 'Keith David Hilton'. I managed to grab a few snaps during my lunch break but had to head back to work so didn't see so much of local shunter 08543 shunting the depot. As I left 37411 was stabled in the layback siding and the place was deserted. I guess there isn't too much urgency about things on a

History to date... take three!

Well the old stuff is still live and available on the old forum, CLICKY CLICKY, but I thought to start off the blog it would be good to recap a little, so here we are - the history and development of a small scenic shunting plank...   Paxton Road started life back in September 2007, my return to modelling spurred on by the arrival of my first child and a realisation that the track day car project was a non-starter! I should explain that Paxton Road is actually a childhood memory adaptation - a
