Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

You can't get me, I'm part of the union ...

This is getting a little silly, now the union link is too short, even though I've made the connecting rod 1mm longer than the drawing     The combination lever looks a little short too, but I think I can live with this.   No way round it, I've got to fabricate two new union links from scratch to the correct length. Not sure if the 2-8-2 link should be longer than a 9F item, but whatever, mine does. I'll tack solder two bits of scrap etch together and make both at the same time then thi

On the fiddle and at the tea

Following a suggestion from Phil Harding (PhilH) of using tea leaves for leaf litter, and the realisation that the current malty breakfast blend I'm currently drinking has an admirable mix of leafy bits, sticky bits and general dust I dried some post-brewing dregs out on a baking tray in a low (50oC) oven. The brewing and drying made it lighter colours too, which look better than the very dark pre-brewing shades. Three pots and a quick grind with a pestle and mortar to generate a bit more fine m

Pages from the sketch book

So, to expand on the idea outlined earlier here's a couple of sketchbook pages to illustrate what I'm talking about. The above sketch shows the wide open backscene typical of forest country in new England perhaps This is exactly the same layout sketch with the backscene changed to something more like the Midwest . The scribble below each layout concept illustrates how the sloping backscene would look in profile. I'd bolt the backscene onto the back with a few coach bolts and wing nuts. Th

class 20 in G, day two of building

A combination of a late finish and calling at my parents to set up his new lap top, has left me with limited time / energy to do much tonight, so I have blended the roof line to the body sides with a rad. Then I shaped a piece of balsa for the nose and bedded it on some P38 filler. when it has dried this will all be blended in too.             John

The ever expanding loco fleet for Wheal Elizabeth

Taking a break from the tedium that is painting rail sides for Clevedon (yawn), I've been playing with 'Highland Region', Vi trains cl 37 acquired from Kernow Models following 43179's guest appearance at Epsom. It should look very nice hauling a rake of bullets. Also have sprayed up my R&H (aren't photos great for find you've over-sprayed). I'll try and have the latter ready for Scaleforum - just need to find the roof now. It's on the workbench somewhere.

A few updates since last time

Well, this is a out of date.   Not a lot has changed since my last update but a few things have happened.   Firstly, a few stock additions:   LSWR T9   GWR Hawksworth 94XX     GWR 8750 – Brought and run in at the Bluebell Railway’s 50th Gala explaining the Standard tank in the background.     Modelzone TPO Limited Edition     I’ve also started work on a OO gauge working diorama which is based on the other end of the line to my main OO gauge layout. Its main purpos

Paint Your Wagon

My attention span has obviously atrophied and my focus suggests an eye test is required urgently. In short , rather than pressing vigourously ahead with the van B, I've become side tracked into finishing two wagons.   The Walrus has been the subject of long-standing lament round here. In a fit of mental aberration I decided to paint the thing - only to find that it is clearly determined to fight me to the death. A first coat of my home-mixed tin of "off-black" produced a distinctly thin cover

Full speed ahead into the corner...

It appears that I am driving myself into a corner that I might not be able to get out of without some kind of layout construction. It all starts here somewhere in Cornwall thread. Northpoint had discussed the problems with the overhang of the trees on his rather super looking layout. I passed comment on an idea that I once had but hadn't acted on for a sloping backscene that could be covered with a depth of tree tops without taking up any layout space. I'd also mooted this idea for the wilds o

Floods in Saxony, Brandenburg, Poland and the Czech Republic

Well, I believe most of you will have heard about the floods which are currently sweeping the eastern parts of the German states of Brandenburg and Saxony, as well as adjacent areas in Poland and the Czech Republic. At least eleven people have been killed thus far and some 1,400 had to be evacuated from their homes in Germany alone. Transport in the area is, of course, affected as well, with the Elbe Valley Railway having been closed between 7 and 8 August. I also read about the Bombardier light

60014: More cab tweaks

I was unhappy with what I'd managed last time, so I thought I'd have another go.     The H&S poster is from a photo, printed on the computer - the paper is a bit thick, but the real thing appears to be a metal or plastic plate rather than a sticker, so some relief is OK. I should have used a low pass filter to remove the ambient light before resizing though! I've also painted the armrests and the knobs on the handles black as well as a couple of other details, and dusted some grot aroun

3. The Carriage Shop - 70 Ton Lifting Traverser

In one of the previous entries to the blog, a question arose about the somewhat unique lifting traverser (most are for "traversing" sideways! only) that was installed between the Carriage and Carriage Lift shop at Glasgow Works. Pictures of it do not appear too often however having first run this past Andy.Y these images were taken from old BREL Glasgow Works pamphlets. There were three traversers in the Caley, one outside of the carriage shop, one within the paint shop and this, the onl

Class 20 in G

Over the weekend I was considering what I could fill my evenings with this week. Mrs RJR is organising a youth camp which are eldest 2 are on and the youngest has gone on Holiday with here friends family, so I am " Home Alone"   Any way I decided I would have a go at a class 20 as I could cheat and use the bogie units off the 25 to give me a head start. After sourcing some suitable plans on Sunday evening and some plasticard on the way home mid after noon today I had everything I needed   H

Ready Mix Cement!

After a gap of sailing and actually running my collection I have returned to work on the scenery. Looking at other depot layouts has made it obvious that the track/ground areas of parts of the depot need, well starting again. The bold decision to rip up things that are working is a tricky one but I think will be worth it. The Ready Mix guys have been in and after sanding and weathing will look much better I hope.

All Change at Mattington...again. Converting to double track

As well as the station rebuild I have decided to add a second running line using the existing trackplan as far as possible. I wanted to keep the running line working as I prefer to watch a train going round while I am working on the railway.   As well as putting a second track in I am installing new electrofrog points to try resolve the shortcircuiting problem I have been having with DCC. The Peco PL15's are very useful for this task.   I also wanted to bring back the point motor operation a

Caia Road Goods in N gauge?

Although I've sold most of my N gauge stock that was appropriate to this layout (B set, Autocoaches, etc) to fund stock for my 09 Wetlands Light Railway, I have been grovelling through old stock boxes and found a Bachmann/Farish 57xx, a Dapol 14xx chassis, a Farish (Poole) Class 25 and 47 (both good runners) and an odd collection of wagons, including four 16ton minerals. Most of these chassis were going to be used on a proposed circular(ish) 009 layout based on the approach to Blaenau Festiniog,

All Change at Mattington - Build a station from scratch

Back in February - March it all started with a platform warping problem. I knew at the time that I wanted to replace it with a plastic one to increase working life and promptly went and bought a couple of Wills platform sections. Then the job went on hold as we had a heat wave and outdoor adventure pursuits took over.   In June-July I decided that I didn't like my station buildings as well as the platform as they took up too much space on the board and looked a little tatty. Not liking any kit

A Ruston rebuild - part 1.

Taking a short break from the Husky I'm tackling this; An A1 Models Ruston 48DS. It belongs to a fellow RMWebber who, after seeing my Ruston at the Derby members day, asked if I could build a new chassis for his and detail the body like my own effort. This one has some damage to the LH cab side; It came with alternative cab sides which the owner had originally glued over the top. I decided to strip the cab down (the roof was coming off anyway so I could fit a securing nut inside); The

Caia Road Goods

I've now got a copy of "The Wrexham & Ellesmere Railway" and in it is a picture of the yard from behind the good shed - not the view I really wanted but it does show the scrap pile.   So Caia Road Goods only had 3 visible points from the goods shed to the road bridge - the crossover would be off layout.   I must admit it would work well in N gauge on two 5 foot boards, but I feel it may/could be effective condensed into (around) five foot, plus fiddle yard in 00 - with the option to hav

The Devil's in the details

Morning all!   Having just learned that at least one class 423 suburban EMU from Munich has been temporarily hired to Frankfurt I was just thinking how I would be looking forward to riding on that one. And here's why:   from the cab of a 1st batch 423 with original GTO inverters whose squeal is quite unique .  However, the 423s sound quite differently from the 2nd batch onwards:   Am I weird?

Calshot - Structure Modelling - The Castle (Part One)

Things have been hectic over the last couple of days as you may have read in ERs, but I'm trying to keep it all together. I find modelling is a great relief from all the stresses of life and today was no exception.   As it is such a major part of the layout I wanted to start construction of the castle now (especially as the layouts debut exhibition is on 4th September!) . Luckily, Saturday I planned ahead and bought some brick sheets and now after about 8hrs of work I have created the gatehous

Drinnick Stores - Main Warehouse

A bit of thinking, musing and pondering, followed by a bit of card cutting and paper sticking, has resulted in the main warehouse building being created.   The theory is that the original building was completely re-vamped inside, creating a new upper floor height and window/entrance. Consequently, the outside of the building was also re-arranged - the large windows were bricked up and smaller ones inserted in the brickwork (still to be done). The main entrance was widened and a roller shutter

2FS Easitrac - Part 2

Another week, another panic as I realise how little progress I've made in the last week!   In the last few days I've managed to do a bit more work on the turnouts. These, as with the plain track, use Easitrac components. I'd previously stuck the turnout timbering down, so first job was to cut some rail (nickel silver code 40 bullhead) and start threading chairs.   (Photo courtesy Mick Simpson)   The chairs are tiny, but can be threaded onto the rail fairly easily if the rail end is sli
