Further thoughts on Charlton

You may remember that I was considering Charlton in South-East London as a prototype, but felt it needed to be reversed to fit my space. Further investigation shows that's not necessary, all I need to do is re-orientate it, so that the station is along the short wall of the room. More laying out of parts

I have started construction of Festiniog Cariage 22 in it's current guise with large windows, as opposed to the earlier wooden panelled and smaller windowed body style, for more details, see here http://www.festipedi...iki/Carriage_22   I have the Worsley Works etches for the wooden body version, but, at present the newer body version is not available. Class 25 interior details

Work has now started on trying to replicate the feel of the cab interior of the 25. The first part being the front consol. This is made from some plasticard off cuts and other bits of scrap from the bit box. The dials are images composed on the computer and reduced to fit. A Grand Day Out

Hello,   Well, my aim of posting one blog entry a week seems to have fallen by the wayside. Class 87 for Caldew

As a break from my recent projects, I decided to start a long overdue project, a Class 87 re-motored and converted to P4.   An old Lima 87 was picked up for about £25 on Ebay, and with Rails of Sheffield having the new Heljan 86's on offer for varying prices, I picked one up for £84.50. Also had the benefit of allowing me to evaluate a Heljan 86 offering, and to be able to make a more informed opinion on it's viability for re-motoring Hornby's much better 86's and Hornby/Lima class 87's.

Work, Glorious Work!

Evening   This weekend has been extremely productive in terms of club activity as the decision was taken to hire a local village hall and pack both layouts over for a blitz session. Both Weyford and Yamanouchi Oshika benefitted from some serious and sustained attention. BOGIES!

No, I've not been shouting that word in libraries in homage to Dick and Dom, but I've actually started work on the springy bogies of 415.   Quite a productive weekend has seen me prepare the 42 teeth gears for fitting onto the axles and make a start on the axles themselves.     The gears originally had a 2mm hole in the centre. I enlarged these by drilling 3.5mm, 4.3mm and then reaming to 4.74mm for an interference fit on the 3/16ths axles. Which brings me, neatly, to the axles themselv

Last night I tried to get the chassis working with the front bogies. Those early locos builders never took us 4mm modelers into consideration when designing their locos. There are a lot of wheels to get into a small space.     Unlike most kits the front bogie is attached to the chassis from a bolt above the centre of the bogie, there is a cast section which glues to the chassis. flying Banana - Part V

Hello Again   I have learnt a few things this week...   1. Its not possible for me to survive a week on £10! 2. There isnt such a thing as a 'standard' mountain bike part! 3. Update - Bit of respite in France for a couple of weeks means a break from modelling...but still the mind keeps turning... One of the things that came from Expo weekend Guinness fueled discussions and something I had also touched on in a previous post was the realisation that Board 3 could 'go it alone' and be a self contained layout. More 2-Bil work

Here's another photo of the 2-Bil motor coach. Buffers heads now added, using the Slaters rams and some spare plastic heads of (almost) the correct shape left over from a Southern Pride Mk1. The heads were glued to the rams and reprofiled to the correct shape. Not exact precision engineering but they look OK.   Since the photo was taken I've made a start on glazing the motor coach.

All trackwork has been built and now the long process of painting sleepers and rail sides begins, before I can lay and ballast. Two and a half hours this afternoon has seen all the sleepers air brushed and one board's rails painted.   I had the local EM area group round on Thursday so I built mock ups of the sheds and water tower to help visualise what the finished article will look like.

Trains finally run!

Uncouted costs and grey hairs after beginning I finally ran my first fully digital train yesterday! Thanks to help from here I fitted the decoder myself, it was nerve wracking but worked in the end. I was slightly annoyed to find that my Lenz Compact only let me alter 7 CV's, even on the programme track. If anyone knows a way round this I would love to know as I was hoping to do some more tweaking to the CT chip I put in. I am going to be pretty busy this week as I have to get the Van ready fo

Front and Back plus a stock wish list!

Today I made some progress with the front and back sections of the baseboards. The back is bolted into place at the moment which will allow easier access to the electrics and for mounting the printed backscene when that is ready. I am starting to consider the fiddle yard/storage cassettes options now. I am currently thinking of having storage cassettes that are 2 feet in length. The second attempt to secure the gear wheel to the axle seems to have worked, as there is no slipping. I took each wheel off in turn, trimmed and adjusted the pickups, greased the bearings and replaced the wheels.     As I watched the loco go up and down the track the rear drivers were not turning, the 2 small rear wheels were lower than the rear drivers by a fraction so a small amount of fileing sorted this out. A van to go with the 06 shunter

It's been a while but I,ve not been completely idle, the 06 is slowly being weathered but that's one of those jobs I have to be in the mood for otherwise I make a right hash of it! By way of diversion I've been building an etched brass kit for a Glyn Valley Tramway tar tank wagon, doing quite well but there are as far as I know there are no extant photographs of the beasties.
