Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

High Level RSH 'Husky' - Cab overlays and footplate.

I soldered the cab overlays onto the cab frame today. These are half etched to give the detail for the window frames, rivets, door etc. Fitting them was easier than I thought, I tinned the edges and then held them in place one at a time and tacked an edge, checked then ran the iron all the way round until firmly fixed. The front and rear were done first and the sides last. The only problem that I had was with the LH side which was tacked slightly off square and decided to be a pig to undo... He

Fitting Halling motor bogies.

I'm sure your all fed up with me espousing the virtues of Halling motor bogies, the one problem being how to actually fit them to the item you want to motorise. The vario units normally fit the Halling trams by small clips on the main body of the drive, the tram truck being made of flexible plastic.   So, thinking cap on and I came up with this....         It's a basic cradle made of 80 thou plasticard that can bolt up into the tram body, so easy removeable for access to the lower d

The construction of Calshot - Part Two

Click on the photos for a larger version: Next job on the list is to construct the framework for the underneath of the board. Then I need to buy 3 right handed 009 points and two yards of flexible 009 track. I will be able to get some builders insulation for the rest of the board (to keep weight down) in the week so a start can be made on the basic relief of the land. The next job then will be to drill holes for the point motors and then pin all the track do

Dropper wires on scenic board soldered and tested

Another quick update.   I've been busy so far today wiring the droppers onto the track and then testing them. So far so good as far as the soldering has gone. I've had 6 successful lines wired and tested using the loadhaul 60 as the test loco.   No pictures of the running. I just have to put the Bus wires in place now and then make a decision on what to use to transfer the power from one board to the other. I still can't work out how I'm going to get a flush join between the 2 boards and sti

The Spanish thing

a quiet weekend at magnolia mansions - too windy to go out on the bike for any great length, but not a lot going on, so got hijacked by the girls to get some scenery in on our little layout. Its going to be 'finished' before I've even got my cab-control working at this rate...   Had some fun running our Spanish wagons and a Feve carriage around in honour of the looming big event, and sure enough, justice was later done (eventually)!   sadly, I was the only one in the house cheering on Spain

One step forward, two steps back

Hello,   It's been a bit of an odd weekend - it was so hot yesterday that I hardly made any progress on the layout and I was struggling to get any enthusiasm for modelling . This morning I popped up to the Hartlepool exhibition and got a top-up of modelling enthusiasm (and some electrical bits and pieces for the layout), so this evening I cut and glued the thin timber trackbed down onto the ply baseboard surface.     It didn't go exactly to plan (I spotted a problem with the alignment of

Cul Uisge - Kyle in 4 feet - Quick lineside hut

On the layout there are only 4 buildings - the station building, goods shed, portacabin (for engineers use) and a small hut that stood between the main loop and the siding at Kyle until the early 80s. It can be seen here : Kyle Station 1982   As a diversion from work on the station building I looked at photos of the prototype hut and built this :     Basic structure is artists mounting board, the door is a peco one cut in half and the cladding is corrugated plasticard left over from makin

More work on lever frame

I realized that the spring on the lever was effectively duplicating the one in the micro-switch so in the best traditions of trying to keep things simple I tried to build a version which doesn't bother using it. The revised lever arrangement is a bit simpler but it takes a little bit of adjustment to:- get the springing in the lever right, the micro-switch to change correctly as the catch handle is pulled and also the screw which fastens the attachment to the lever not to foul the mic

Some modelling at last: Class 50, 37s, HST and GUVs

Finally found a couple of hours today watching the grand prix to do some modelling... (apologies for the naff photos, couldnt find the camera so they are all taken with the phone.)   Started off with some finishing work on 50031, this has now been fitted with the final few details and given a quick coat of grey primer. Still need to add the new lifting lugs (only remembered these once I had finished spraying...) The chassis has been fitted with a set of Ultrascales and a decoder to free up

Mk1 Suburban in Primer

Today has been one of those Saturdays when I hoped to get a decent bit of modelling time but didn't.   In the 20 mins I did escape to the shed I decided a coat of primer was in order. I find it helps to find what needs attention.           John

GNR Atlantic

All I seem to do is add a bit more filler and sand it.     This evening I sanded those parts I filled last night.Pity I had not read the other threads first, however this kit had been hacked about a bit and I might have ruined the footplate had I tried to solder it up on its own. Its not a 100% square, the photos make it worse though     Every time I look at the loco I find missing parts, for some reason a lump of the footplate has been sawn off, back with the Milliput.   Also you c

Holiday dreams in the Forest of Dean...

I've just got back from a lovely week in the Forest of Dean with the family. Of course we visited the railway (and rode behind City of Truro - a real treat!) and that's where my fascination started... two books, six sketches and lots of doodling later and I've not worked up a suitable track plan, decided on a location, period or anything really but I was inspired and it's another layout plan on my 'one day' plan. I've always had a soft spot for the GWR and in particular the Collet cab 57xx pan

The construction of Calshot - Part One

I have (with the help of carpenter Dad, of course!) made a strong start on the construction of Calshot. For those that requested, I have put up a gallery that will contain all the pictures from the construction process. Total time spent so far (excluding planning (!)) - 120mins.   Here's the gallery: http://jamiewarne.fotopic.net/c1870342.html   (Can't link to one of the photos because it doesn't agree with the system so I can't show a sample image.) Should make some very visible progress

High Level RSH 'Husky' - Cab frame.

I started this one at the Derby Members Day. I didn't get too far, people kept talking to me! (It was nice to finally put names to faces). Its a High Level 4mm scale kit for a Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns 'Husky' diesel loco, introduced in 1956. Ten were built before production ceased in 1966. The kit comprises of an etched nickel silver chassis, an etched brass body and a bag of lost wax castings. Power is from a Mashima 1220. The kit is complete with a dedicated 108:1 gearbox. Instructi

The joy of mad purchases

Despite the fact that my layout, Rempton & Clensmouth has been designed to accommodate many of my eclectic tastes, and also the fact that I have tried to keep my growing fleet of locos and rolling stock within a certain sphere of operations (albeit with a large pinch of modellers' license), I have found myself recently wanting to purchase and indeed purchasing some, let's call them, "out of context" bits and pieces.   Rempton & Clensmouth - as introduced in my last blog entry - has be

Ongoing improvements and repairs.

New sand drag in the bay platform. Brambles need trimming! The little bit of vertical rail in the ballast is a stop in case a unit overruns..or an operator not paying attention! It will be incorporated in the framework for the double red stop lamp, based on the one at St Ives.   New replacement fencing made from brass square tube and fine dressmakers mesh fabric. The grass along the bottom of the fence was done with the 'Grassmaster' using the cone accessory.   Anti vermine netting fitted.

More photos of Matford at Exeter Show 2010

A few more images of Matford, taken at the Exeter show on 5/6 June 2010:   General view looking towards buffer stops, Class 158 is ready to depart towards Exeter St Davids and Cardiff, the Class 170 waits it's turn in the carriage siding before working a service to Waterloo:   Looking through the 'rat hole' under Mutton Lane towards the station area, some shunting is in progress, the Captain's favourite shunting area for playing with 3 links! Scrap, oil and bitumen traffic are handled in t

Class 06 progress & 009 layout

My but it's a long time since I put anything into the blog, however to make up for it there are two seperate items. First the 06, I had fully intended to put up a couple more entries as it progressed from grey to full green but that didn't happen. So here we are now in British Railways green and all lettered up, the weathering has started but there's a way to go yet. I know the lettering font is wrong but I couln't find the type that corresponded with all the photographs I had, and to be honest

Oh bu**er!

Early indications are that there is a fundamental design flaw in the etched parts for this conversion   To be honest, I'm a bit annoyed with myself for not spotting and thinking about it earlier. The problem is that the cranked design of inner frame, designed to bring the axlebox into the right place, without having to mill down the bogie sideframes, doesn't allow the axlebox to travel high enough up the guide.   I've now got to decide whether I press on with what I've got, milling the s

Mock up - Final Part

Mock up - Final Part Here is the final design for the layout. The wood may well be cut out today providing I don't find any more flaws with the design. I'm relieved to have finally got this far - at some points I wasn't even sure if it would happen. Please ignore the pillbox on top of the castle - this will be relocated behind the goods platform on the other side of the narrow gauge line. The photos are from last night and so are not 100% accurate but are near enough.   I'd welcome any though

Flying Banana - Part I

Hello   Like so many 2mm bods I have gained quite a bit of enthusiasm from last weekends 2mm Expo so, taking a break from the layout for a short while I have taken on another engine.   At the Expo I picked up a 2mm Scale GWR Diesel Railcar aka 'Flying Banana' and armed with the book 'Great Western Diesel Railcars' by J.H.Russell I have made a start...       So far all I can say is OMG this is going to be a little more difficult than I first thought. I have had to make a couple of ne

Summertime Garden project

At this week's Scalefour Area Group meeting there was a little banter that I've not entered any postings since 16th June. Hmmmm.......well here come the excuses..........not much has happened on the layout as a major Garden Project has been given priority by the "power that needs to be obeyed". Got to blame someone :-)). We also have a visitor staying with us for a couple of weeks. I then have a holiday coming up which means not much else will happen for at least the next fortnight.   On the p
