Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

New N'spirations and 2mm Anniversary Expo

I pleased to report that the second issue of my exclusive magazine has come back from the printers. I'm impressed and pleased with the quality and finish, although there is one little problem - some reversed out text on two small coloured panels didn't come out. Fortunately they're small and don't detract from the content; one was about ordering the first issue (on page 2) and the other is a photo caption (on page 19). I've reported it to the printers but to be quite honest there's little they c

A bit more progress on the Mk1

I have to confess to being a plasticard-aholic, I have been routing in the scarp box for bits to finish of the shape on the first side (found enough !)   Tonight's pics include an end shot to help you decide if I have got the profile right.         Two reasons I have made the side up in sections, 1) they are easier to handle 2) I wanted to get the doors to look like they are separate.     Finally a potential caption competition ??     John

My first diesel depot blog

Dear all, after a little persuasion, I've started a plan for a diesel depot to display, and run, my slowly growing fleet of circa 1978 diesels. The period is based on personal recollections of the area in, and just to the North of, Kings Cross. So far I have three detailed and weathered class 55s (see Bedelands view workbench in weathering painting and transfers), two further 55s (Deltics) awaiting work, a 47 (Brush 4) and split headcode 37 (37); all in BR blue. The locos are all Bachmann. The H

Farewell to "Mossley Terrace"

I was approached a couple of weeks ago to see if I was interested in parting with "Mossley Terrace" a small pass through layout/diorama that I built over the winter before last.   With changing circumstances I cant imagine me taking it to any more exhibitions and it has been stored in the shed since its last outing to Crewe in January. So I decided the space and a bit of cash were more use.   By way of a farewell I got it out tonight, gave it a dusting ready for an impending hand over and to

A quick update regarding progress on LOASFAW.

Finally managed to get the track and extra foam board I needed for the layout today.   I got 4 concrete sleeper code 55 flexi track length to replace the stations wooden sleeper track as it will look better and I'm going to use the track from the scenic track to go into my fiddle yard along with another 4 lengths as well to make the 8 top level fiddle yard tracks that i'm going to put down.   I've not done any of the work today as I've not felt upto it but I will make a start tomorrow when e

Welcome to my new blog!

Having only just bought a laptop and my own home broadband net access, I'll post occasional news about how my layouts and modelling philosophies evolved, especially about coping with my hobby living in a small flat. I haven't bought a digital camera or any scanning equipment yet so please bear with me not posting any photos to show you of some of my past efforts.   I model in both N and OO, although OO has the upper hand by far now because of the wider range of models available, both new and

CDAs and Scenery

Hello At the DEMU exhibition a few weeks back I joined the 2mm society and have now received my membership goodies plus an order of Easitrac. As I've not done much scenery I decided to make a small 'sampler' board to try everything out- doing water , buildings , landscaping etc - I've looked at a fairly topical location for inspiration, so I have somewhere to pose my Peco CDAs - which are my favorite models Im pretty sure you can guess the place in question!   The little layout is built o

Saltney, Its all in the details

A recent visiting loco in the form of J94 68006 brought an ER flavour to the layout. This was until someone pointed out that 68006 had done time at Birkenhead shed in the early 60’s! A bit more local loco than we thought.. My Arriva liveried bubble car escaped from Cardiff Bay and managed more mileage round the layout in an hour than the real thing does in a day (probably)   Another visitor in the form of a GW liveried auto trailer looked rather nice (even if it was with a BR liveried l

Some more pictures of much the same.

Hi all,   Had promised to post these before now, but here are some close up images of the layout taken the same day, hopefully showing a bit more detail.   Not much of a picture, but I used it, as i felt it could easily be mistaken for a larger scale than the 2mm it is.   A simple office building at the entrance to the goods yard made from plasticard, whilst the station building can be seen in the background again built from plasticard and Slaters stone sheet, the platform side which

Mk1 Suburban progress

I've run out of plastic card for the time being, but tonight was quite fruitful. One side is starting to look something like.         But pointing man is complaining he cant get out .. no handles !     John

Done it! (well, sort of)

No, not finished the large 37, or the small one for that matter, but I've achieved something that I hoped was possible, but wasn't sure about.   I was given a healthy dose of reassurance by Andy, here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/topic/16226-andys-plop-shop/page__view__findpost__p__153226   Which showed that what I was trying to achieve is relatively simple, and all the experimentation I had done (to little avail) with Tipp-Ex and other substances wasn't really necessary.

You Shall Go to the Ball

The aim was to have a portable layout that wasn't a micro shunting plank that would fit in to our (rather small) car. There's nothing wrong with shunting planks but I wanted the whole station, preferably uncompressed. I drive a Citroen C2, and there's not much room in the back. Unfortunately hobbies that require large objects to be moved don't fit in well with a love of small French hatches.   Initially I thought the layout could fit behind the rear seats, but this is a daft shaped space that

More hardstanding, and a spot o' ballast

I finally put some ballast down! Not very much, since we were just off out, but enough to get a feel for it.       I'm after the look of (what looks to me like) pale grey ballast as used at Whitemoor, still fairly fresh. At the moment it's much much too stark, especially since I washed the track with a fairly heavy concoction of burnt umber and black to add a bit of variation to the sleepers yesterday. The hope is that everything will tone in when some brake dust and other colouring is ble

Track laying on Blackwell Road

Track laying has commenced on Blackwell Road, with wiring and tortoise point motor installation being completed along the way.   I've gone for Exactoscale / P4 Track Co.'s NewTrack system through out the scenic boards, making use of their 60' 24 sleeper panels, S1 Chairs and Steel rail. Originally I was going to combine the NewTrack turnout kits with the FastTrack bases and C&L's HiNi rail, but I changed my mind considering that the sleeper grain is far too over stated on the FastTrack, an

Its been a while - Backlog of work to do

Evening all,   Its been a while. So a update for mainly my OO layout because my O gauge has had nothing done to it lately due to lack of time to make the backscene and get my hands on some mounts for it. Hopefully one that will be done by the end of the summer holidays.   Doveston   Track and scenery   Not a lot has changed to the layout since the last update layout wise apart from the station is now where the goods shed used to be and that has moved to join the engine shed in the 'yard

Mk1 coach in G

Okay so I have realised I am not very good at this sitting and thinking about things lark, so decided just to get on with my next project despite all my concerns about whether it would work !!!   After checking stock levels I found I had 5 sheets of 60 thou plasticard so that seemed a good place to start. When the rest of the country sat down to watch England get beat this afternoon I set to work in the shed. and here is how I got on.   I couldn't work out how to support the shape of the si

My new station Borve

During the last few weeks I started construction on my new station Borve. Borve is the junction of the line from Portree to Uig with the line to Dunvegan. The station is build on four segments. At the moment on the three main segments the track is laid except for one turnout and the track for two yard tracks.       Markus

Mrk 1 coach in G or not that is the question

I have been quietly been experimenting with the idea of a mrk 1 coach to keep the rat company, it would be BIG ! It has been some what problamatic on several fronts. Not least that because when the track was laid I was only running very short 4 wheel wagons, which didnt need long sweeping curves and lengths of level rail !   I started by making a test rig, ( a piece of 2" x 3" and 2 bogies ! )       The timber is not the correct overall length but was cut big enough to carry bogie cent

Assorted progress

Well despite having a staycation the other week, progress has been limited somewhat of late. Must be the weather. It certainly isn't the football...     A couple of jobs that have been floating around for a while have been done. I finally finished off the handrails for the R&H 165DE and duly applied a blast of ECC Blue. More painting required yet - it's way too clean but I'd like to have it finished before Scaleforum in Sept.   The weathered silver bullets have been subjected to the sam

Good progress today!

I was able to get the landscaping finished today including the bridge area pictured in my prototype pics post. Have now completed all the plastering as well, so its onto track and wiring next (gulp!) Here's the pictures from today.   all 3 boards together on temporary stands.   Finished third board and unshaped second.   View up the finished scenic board   Plastering the second board having shaped the underpass.

Cylinders

As I mentioned in the comments of the last entry the cylinders got soldered up the other night. Well now they are fitted to the chassis     I had to add a small amount of packing to the front edge to get the correct angle for them. The original chassis design was based on a Comet Britannia front end so the angle was not quite right. A single strip of scrap etch from the cylinders kit was perfect.   Here's a shot of the loco with the body on     Note the cylinders are slightly too far
