Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Inspiration for Victoria Bridge Part II

Looking through old SVR aerial photos, I stumbled accross this one which I had lost, as you do, in the back of my computer.   A useful one for getting the scenery right in my diorama. (The train is, I have to confess, a bit of a cheat.. the camera never lies.... mmmmmmm)     Come and have a go this weekend (as a warm up to the football... or as an alternative!)   (blatant plug... details of the flights can be found at http://www.classicflight.com and http://www.wolverhamptonairport.co.

Gathering inspiration for Victoria Bridge! (come fly with me...)

It's been a while since my Victoria Bridge project appeared on the blog... hopefully this weekend will see me inspired to get it going again, I promise it will!   Sunday will see me volunteering at Halfpenny Green helping to orchestrate scenic Dragon Rapide flights over the local area (including the Victoria Bridge/Trimpley vicinity), if you get chance to visit, do come and say hello! (somewhere near the Classic Flight trailer)       Fingers crossed for good weather   (blatant plug...

The last bit of major progress for a while!

Well Doctors orders mean no more solvents, paints and generally other nasty chemicals can be used at the moment so I am having to take a step back from doing buildings and the like for the layout. Still I have made excellent progress and with my return to work next week I am starting to feel proud of this Springs modelling season. It occurred to me that I had not taken a picture of the layout in its entirety. I also had a good tidy over the past few days and the room it is in now looks prese

Glazing

I have really not been in the modelling mood this week due to various happenings taking place in real life. But tonight I ventured down the shed for an hour while everyone else was out. The 25 is getting to a point that time spent yields small perhaps even unnoticeable results.   Anyway I have cut and fitted the remaining glazing so all windows are now done, there will be a little tidying to do round the frames, but that is best when the solvent weld has hardened. I also added the steps under

Gerlos und Koenigsleiten

The trackplan for a 2.10m (7 metric feet), is this attached. At the bottom is the main station Gerlos, at the top is the fiddle yard, quite small but then there's not much room!   In red is the top station Koenigsleiten. The two longer consists cannot pass here, but that should be fixable.... The circle on the left is in fact a two and a half turn spiral....   As I have now added an extra 4" to the table, it will have to change, bit not very much.

Normal Service Will Be Resumed

My internet is broken somewhat broken, hence the lack of pictures. I am down to 18kB/s on up to 4Mb broadband! On top of that the Sky+ box died overnight, refusing to come off stand by. That said there is very little to see with the layout.   I booked the week off work to do finish the to-do list so that the layout can travel, and would work. I even wrote the to-do list. This went something like:   Finish power supply enclosure Build some cassettes Fit adaptors for the cassettes to fit to

Rolling Stock

Have done a few pictures today! Only the goods trains are started as Dapol aren't producing their "B" set coaches at the moment and I can't find any for sensible money. as my setting is the 1940's much of my stock is weathered to give it a more dirty and battered appearance as befits a railway which is busy with the war effort and where resources for maintainance and cleaning are limited. Return of the Modelling Mojo

Hello,   Apart from spending a few days helping on the 2mm Scale Association stand at exhibitions, I've not done any serious modelling for over six months, and not had any enthusiasm for doing any either. My abortive 2mm Golden Jubilee Layout Challenge entry has been sitting unloved and gathering dust in the spare room, and I was beginning to wonder if I was ever going to get things moving again, but a day at the recent DEMU Showcase seems to have done the trick, and in a slightly unexpected w

The test track expands...

The test track from a few posts back, now sports a radius 3 PECO set-track loop as well. It was quite a squash as the radius is not much less than the HOm loop!   I added it only because the Dapol Voyager was having severe difficulties on the radius 1 curves.   At the same time it means the ROCO HOe Mh.6 can now go for a decent spin, it was also not liking the radius 1 curves very much.

The first cut is the deepest

Ok, there wasn't really any doubt that I would have to shorten the body of the 2-8-2 was there?   so, after some careful marking out with my trusty Rotring compass/dividers, having worked out the cut width of the razor saw, two vertical cuts were made in the smokebox between the chimney and boiler join (note slight over cut with the saw marking the running plate )     The cuts were made here to preserve the rivet detail and superheater at the boiler join. Further cuts through the runnin

Chunky Beast

The Steelman is virtually finished.   There's plenty of room in the engine compartment for the decoder and LED resistors. The speaker will fit in the fuel tank.   The pic of the chassis and footplate shows how low the motor is mounted within the loco, as well as the first stage of weighting the beast - the lead flashing fits snugly in the space under the raised cab floor.   Window frames and lights will be fitted after painting - my first choice is for dayglo orange ends with angled black

The story so far...

The initial plan was: Kingsbridge terminus plus some single line scenic sections in a modular system to enable me to alter the running length. Later put in more scenic sections and the passing station. Period to be wartime as this had the most interest for operating and as an escaped wargamer I could still put in a few tanks.   to summarise about 6 weeks of frantic activity- I found out how expensive it was going to be! All purchases would have to be carefully planned and I'd have to stop an

Im attracted to you...

Hello   Recently I made a decision on how Highclere was going to turn up at the Expo. The choice was between having the curved end boards done so I could run something through the station or getting the uncoupling magnets done so I could shunt a few things around the layout. I decided the latter would probably be a more sensible thing to do so I made a start on the uncoupling magnets...   A while ago I picked up some SEEP electromagnet uncoupling coil thingies to use on Highclere but I have

'Chard's bit on the side: platforms for 'N' Queen Street

On the Waverley images thread the temptation is getting ever stronger to stretch my layout envelope back to 1966 to permit me to drop the fires on steam's reign. Developments in N have nearly tempted me to consider that as a viable alternative, too. So imagine my delight when a mate conspiratorially mentioned, after refreshment had been taken, that he was returning to the hobby and tackling Glasgow Queen St in 'N.' This way, should I decide to pick up any 2mm T&RS, there'll be a place for

Update

I’m conscious that I’ve not updated my blog for some time now. I have been undertaking a number of modelling projects but they’re not particularly appropriate to write up here.   One bit of news is that the second issue of my magazine - N’spirations - is currently at the printers and hopefully will be available shortly. I’ll post up news as soon as I receive them back with details of how to obtain a copy.   I’m also hoping to be at the 2mm SA anniversary expo in Oxford (first we

Can something be too long?

Thanks to Dave Holt for pointing out a glaring error that resulted in a massive gap between the rear driver and the firebox/ashpan. Turns out that I made a last minute change to the frame drawing when I compared the tracing with that of a Comet Britannia chassis. This threw the whole chassis forwards by approx 2mm (6" in the real world), but meant that the cylinders were at least in the correct place on the chassis.   So last night I unsoldered the rear mounting from the frames and repositione

There must be something I can make these into ?

These are never going t look right behind my nice new Rat..     But they do have a nice sturdy frame underneath.       The steps would need chopping out and the buffers raising.. But I'm sure they could form the basis of a more "respectable" model.     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6hp4RFY-CI     They scale at 260" across the current buffer lugs... Any ideas for an appropriate size wagon ?

Hardstanding

The right hand end of Whitemarsh has a couple of little sidings. Just space for some TMD-esque stuff.       I picked Ipswich Freightliner stabling/fuelling point as the inspiration for this - it's the right area of the country and a neat little depot in a tiny space. Not as tiny as the space on the model though! I also think it'll add some personality missing from Whitemoor, which is really clean and tidy and new-looking. There's a useful picture by Colin Brooks which gives a reasonable vi

Barrow Road - The Workshop - Crane Girders

The inside wall of the Workshop has an 'I' girder under the upper windows either side of the building to support the travelling 15 ton crane.   After pondering how to represent the girder & their supports I opted to fabricate the girder supports from plasticard and used a plastruct 'I' girder fixing them to the inside wall using superglue gel - I am pleased with the result.   I will give some consideration to modelling a representation of the crane in due course.

Exhibitions etc

I did a count and realised that last year all I did was go to exhibitions! It was about 14, not counting the ones I was appearing/working in. I need to get out more often!   I've cut it down to six for this year, and I'm getting out and about.   I've even got interested in canals, a fascinating period in history. Do you realise that there is a chance that the canal network could be fully restored, while there is little possibility that railways will be restored to their former glory.
