Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Return to HOe?

OK, so I've been working in N gauge, but it hurts so much!   When assembling the little sheds from the Peco platform kit starts to take a number of evenings, you have to begin to wonder if you're doing the right thing!   I have been building out my HOe stock collection, so now I have most of the ZB steam special (except for the generator van and the Kristall Wagen, too bling for words). That together with the fact that Lilliput are going to bring out the Zillertalbahn Gmeinder diesel with ma

coombe junction - Coombe fly with me...

Update - With apologies to Sinatra , I think I have now found a solution to be able to transport the layout to the UK for my target date circa summer 2012.   Originally, the idea was to transport it in one large box, but courier costs were ridiculously high (one of the factors for withdrawing the layout from the GJLC) I then began to search other options, namely custom made cases, although these were expensive items alone.   It then occurred to me that the boards could each have their own bo

Coming together

not much progress this weekend, spent too long in the kitchen ripping off tiles and wall units ready for the plasterer on Wednesday   Finished off the front bogie and did a little more fetting with the boiler lower. Here's a couple of shots of the loco assembled so far       the second one shows an area of concern for me. I will have to fabricate the missing section of firebox bottom and grate so that it at least meets the frames (that shouldn't really be there). Ashpan might get so

Return to Foundry Lane

The layout has been stored away for the past couple of months since we moved house. However with exhibition appearances looming I thought I'd better dig it out and make sure it all still worked. Bea looked unimpressed as Foundry Lane arrived at its new home:   It seems I've been away from the layout so long that time has marched on - a 37 takes the place of the more usual 24 or 25 and the Capri on the lane is now a Mk 3 B)     The layout doesn't appear to have suffered too much from

Finishing details on the Sentinel

I've been tinkering over the last few evenings on my Judith Edge Sentinel shunter.   I aquired some lead sheet from a friend and have filled both bonnets - running performance is vastly improved! I've also added the end handrails from 0.45mm wire - and the fiddly sand pipes on the chassis.   Eagle eyed viewers will note I've done a 'halfwit' (sorry Paul!) and got one ends handrails inconsistently bent - this has now been corrected (photos are always good at showing up defects). I've also got

As a break from my recent modelling in 00 over the past couple of years this weekend has seen me move back to N gauge to build one of my westcoast station buildings for a fellow RM Web member. I have to addmitt that I realy have enjoyed this build and I now have the urge to do some more work on my own N gauge layout that has been mothballed for the past three years.

More Class 50 detailing

The next step on my class 50 detailing project was to correct the exhaust ports at the no2 end, working from this photo by Keith Wright http://newimages.fotopic.net/?iid=y11i0f&noresize=1&nostamp=1&quality=70 which shows that the exhausts should be offset to the side of where Hornby put them. So thats the roof pretty much finished....         Again I removed the original detail using course wet & dry taped to some plasticard offcuts and glued the new etch into place, befo

More painting and weathering

Been on a roll this afternoon, plus the sun was out   Painted in the sun         back in the shed for some handrails and weathering, sorry if you like clean diesels, I like mine Used       back in the sun for some better pictures         I guess cab and buffer beam details are next, then when the paint it a bit tougher glazing and other small details.     John

Boards go down and first upper level track gets checked for clearance

Another update on the layout.   I got the foam board as I mentioned the other day and test fitted it on the fiddle yard board but today I've managed to get the scenic board done today and I've also marked out with the correct spacing the 4 lines and I've also checked clearance between the lines on the scenic board as well.   I've still to get the fiddle yard board track down but I need some more track first before I can lay it. I should have the track in the next week depending on finances a

Some more progress

I have surprised myself with how much I have been managing to do recently. My first building took me about 6 months to complete but the last 3 (although they all need painting and details etc) were all done in the space of about 4 weeks. I think that the method of using the Lego has worked well for me.   Today I added the roof to the Boulengerie which means that aside from detailing it and adding lighting (more on that later!) its structurally done. I have also given it a first coat of paint.

Barrow Road - The Workshop

Following the Scalefour Society AGM I have had a short break from modelling - no I haven't been away, I've spent the past 4 days up and down a 6.7m tower scaffold painting the gable end wall of the house. Now that job is finished I have made a start on the shed workshop which is at the rear of the shed. The workshop is a feature of most Midland railway roundhouses and was used to repair the small Midland railway locos up until grouping and continued to do so through LMS days - although by the

Test fitting the bodywork and other fiddling

Well, now the chassis is basically powered and on it's drivers the time has come to think about all the bits that will fit to it!   Firstly the front bogie has been assembled and a mounting fabricated from scrap Kemilway etch (you can still see the "KEM")     Must get that nut soldered back on for the weighshaft/motion support bracket!   The boiler lower has been trimmed up and placed on the chassis.     As the lower will need to be fitted to the chassis before the bodywork I thi

coombe junction - A little more...

Update - Fairly mundane tasks but some progress tonight. Firstly, adjusting Board No 3 to the same 'working plane' height as Board No 2, secondly building up the track bed to match (I ran out of imported DIY cork floor tiles so had to use card) and thirdly, laying the track down to form the gentle curve in the dries.   The mock up buildings previously made will need to be trimmed to match the curve of the run-a-round loop but there is enough room for a loco to pass and I have now adjusted the

More details tonight, I have not rubbed them down and primed them yet so please forgive the rough edges..           Pointing man seems to be putting on some pressure for me to do the cab interior !     John

Progress So Far...

So its been nearly six months into the project and thought it might be worth while doing a short overview of progress thus far.   It may seem that not much work has been done on the project, however this isnt going to be a 5min wonder. A significant amount of time has been spent researching prototypes and sourcing information and details on the various locos wagons and structures that can be found on the many 3foot lines dotted around Sweden. This is of course made increasingly more difficult

Cable troughs etc.

At long last I've found the ballast I wanted and have started preparing the track surrounds - sorting out levels, etc.     I've also started doing the around-track detailing - orange pipes and cable troughs are this year's GWR branchline if you like modern image stuff, but they look so good   The orange pipe is leftover from my layout wire, with the conductors (mostly) stripped out and the end opened out slightly with a knife-point. It seems to be the right size, I think the Peco sleeper

Handrails mounted to the footplate. Careful work with .45mm wire, flux and 145degree detailing solder and this is the result so far. There's a little bit of cleaning up to do, but I usually save all this until last, just before the kit gets a good wash in a 50/50 mix of Viakal (bath cleaner) and original Fairy liqid, using a fibre glass brush and toothbrush to massage the mix into all the nooks and crannies.   I chickened out on folding up the outer edges of the cab roof to form the gutter str

The Germany game

While watching the Germany v Australia game on Sunday I was privileged to be able to put one board on the coffee table and start laying sleepers. Little did I know that I was being photographed........here   This is just a short update about an enjoyable evening spent watching football, laying sleepers and fiddling with a buffer stop......bliss.

New stock for Avonwick

With the 2mm expo getting very close I'm sure I should be panicking, but other things just seem to keep getting in the way. Modelling time has been exceptionally restricted for the past 9 months so very little has been done, however over the past couple of weeks I have found a little time to start building a little more stock for the layout. It's not finished but I'm hoping that another week will see it painted, then I might get a chance to build a 2nd Toplight.   1st up is a Toplight - This w

"Hornby Product Announcement!"

What's this?! A first look at a new Hornby product?!       A brand new, DCC fitted, Gresley W1 4-6-4. Simply stunning.   Okay, hands in the air - it's not technically a new product, direct from Hornby.   What it is, is a commission build by Graeme King for me, to produce a W1 by extending the Hornby Railroad Mallard as a base.   The great advantage of using 60022 was its DCC fitted chassis - which, straight out of the box, runs perfectly.   Taking this model out of the box and pl
