Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Time?

Summers here, and for me Im calling time on modelling for now, the financial side of things isnt improving, and although people are looking, a lack of comments has made me think is it all worth it? maybe its just me ..   The 101 is the only solitary thing ive worked on recently, the DMS' underframe is more or less 90% done, with just some small details to go, then theres the remotoring of it and the lights, which I havnt yet added, and probably by the time ive finnished this, 101692 will only

Trampoline anyone ?

I have been expecting 3 deliveries   The kids trampoline that triggered the replanning of the outdoor line. Whiteboard restorer for work The extra track to finish the outdoor rework   Today 2 out of the 3 arrived, the one I wanted most, the track didnt !!   So with only the trampoline to play with I spent the evening putting it up and happily it fitted as planned       The front leg need to be sat in a trench to level it up, but my big concern, will the legs clear the track was n

-3 - Kyle - Epilogue...

Update - Its almost 3 days since the BHMRC exhibition and I have had time to reflect upon Kyle in a boxfile and its future.   Many lessons have been learnt, the most important being not leaving things till last minute. It's always good to work to a deadline however I really suffered from losing almost a month as I tackled a new form of turnout construction. Examples of the time lost were reflected in: not getting a chance to build the station building, general weathering of the layout and roll

Bad Fruit

After spending a while matching the background colour of the decals to the blue of the van (I lightened the original blue with a hint of Coach Roof Off White RC417), the decal was ready for printing.   One tip to save using a full sheet of A4 decal paper; print the decal out on normal paper at draft quality, then cut a portion your decal paper to overlap and match it and tape it the decal paper over the draft printout being careful to leave enough around the edges to prevent the tape from bein

The beginnings.....

Time for another layout!. I wanted a round & round layout to watch trains go by... another requirement was for it to be viewable from all sides so it could sit on a table etc....   Recently I've spent much time on the Lincolnshire side of the Humber Bridge & its muddy banks. Many dog walks later I gave in to the tempation to attempt to model one of the small privately owned Tileworks that once lined this VERY muddy riverbank.....   The baseboard is 2x1, 6mm ply then 50mm "pink-f

Waiting for frames ....

Well, the frame jig spacers are being made so while I wait for them I've been playing with some other bits and bobs     I've built up the Comet GB5 and fitted it to the Sagami motor I bought from the Captain ages ago. After an extensive running in session it's running nice and smooth. Lovely dinky little gearbox and only 8mm wide, which is good for this project!   Only problem is the motor is not so narrow and will foul the frames. I need to add a DE38 drive extender, so more money for Ge

Dirty limpet: Botch de-botched

I made an unpleasant mistake on this one at 2am, which took quite a bit of fixing. Came out pretty well in the end, I think.     I wanted to make something along the lines of these pictures of 390181 by Martyn Read:   http://ukrailrolling.../p36338863.html and http://ukrailrolling.../p24117355.html (large image!)   The disaster was deciding to fade the paint too late - I applied a wash-like layer of MIG white pigment with their fixer, and of course with the fixer you can't really see ho

Teaser and cruel close up!

Progress does feel like it's been a little slow in the past few weeks... I've snatched a few hours here and there to progress my Judith Edge Sentinel P4 project! Never the less this evening saw another milestone as I fitted the cab glazing after painting the interior and adding some extra detail! Those who are regular readers will remember that I've got the kit with a Black Beetle bogie - this required some modification (read bodging) and that's why I've ended up in the off situation of havi

Trying to avoid getting the hump

It has been a frustrating few weeks on the scalefour roundy-roundy. A major part of the design is the track running from the high-level viaduct down to the quayside. This was all laid, and generally locomotives could go up and down it, however getting a train to go either up or down was causing problems.   As there is a reversal on the way down you have to deal with the locomotive being at the 'up hill' end for half of the journey. This leads to two problems, firstly when you shunt the wagons

April in May - sort of...

This could be how I might describe the weather today - been fairly unstable with sun and rain chasing each other. In between, however, I snapped a pair of photos at Frankfurt Southern Station...         ...one of 185 060 with a goods train, still in sunlight...         ...and one of 143 019 at the head of RB 15220 from Aschaffenburg to Frankfurt Central Station.     The clouds broke a few moments after the second photo .

Frames for the 2-8-2 cut

Finally, I have some real frames. First I cut two pieces of copperclad pcb material to size then spray glued a copy of the frame "comic" to the top piece. These were then clamped to some 12mm mdf. Holes were bench drilled to take some 4ba screws right through the sandwich to secure everything once the clamp was removed.   1.6mm pilot holes were drilled through at the axle locations. I've done this so that I can use crankpins fitted in the mdf as a jig for setting up the coupling rods. As the f

SFG Layouts Exhibition Diary

Staffordshire Finescale Group's Exhibition Diary   About Us Staffordshire Finescale Group isn't and model railway club. It doesn't have a clubroom. It exists purely as a group of friends, located across the East and West Midlands, who encourage each other to improve both the quality and quantity of their railway modelling output. Most of us model in 4mm scale, predominantly in EM gauge, although the group is not intended to be scale or gauge specific. As a group our main focus is on modelling

Photo Update

One half of Ring Road is down today (convincing me even further I need a 'quick' single board layout to play trains on without disrupting entire dining room!), mainly to give the 350 a run in, but also a quick look at some other recent train formations:     David

Gratuitous Loco Pictures

With the new line laid and the track on order to complete the loop, I fancied a bit of work on my favourite loco. It had gotten just a little neglected and had a slight dust look. So I have given it a clean and a wash with diluted satin varnish just to lift the paint work to an oily clean look. It only took half an hour and was worth the effort as I was rewarded with a break in the clouds to take some pictures

Getting on again.

This afternoon, I've started the inlaid track around where the goods shed is going. Originally I had planned to hack the kit to have a twin/staggered goods shed, but then I realised I'd be shunting into and out of it. Is that allowed? I can't find my rule book, so I can't check... I know I ought to have planned what was going where and all that, but this is the first time I've actually got as far as I have in terms of scenery and a cohesive whole. Anyway, it's an exercise in using what I've

A day at Expo EM:

Having spent yesterday demonstrating with DEMU at Expo EM I have got on with a few projects:   Firstly I picked up some more South East Finecast embossed brick, so I can now get on with with designing and building the next bridge for the layout. The intention here is two fold, firstly to break down the brick bridge which is currently on Blackcombe, from this I will remove the main girder spans for reuse. This bridge will then be replaced with a new version which is more typical in design to

Network rail scale track reworks in the garden

Due to the impending arrival of a new trampoline for my daughters I have had to make some compromises in the garden. The main result is flattening the rockery, removing and moving the return loop that was at the bottom of the garden. Of course to them it may seem as though I lost the battle that was being mediated by the domestic planning authority, of course, it was a tactical loss, I may well have lost the battle but when you see how much further away the return loop is... I think I may well h

More Scratchbuilding?

After what I said the other day I was surprised to see myself picking up the scalpol and eagerley starting work on the next building for the layout. Indeed the work seemed to be a bit easier and (perhaps) a little better. As posted previously I am using an Oxford Diecast plastic box as the base which the plasticard structure will be added. I have so far made the 4 walls in plasticard and established that a piece of 80thou plasticard at the top is enough to counter the box's slightly tapering sid

    • I agree, it is very hard to produce anything other than an 'outline' from those drawings.  Beware, I have also found several inaccuracies in those drawings, many of which emanate from 'The Locomotive Magazine'.   I also find it difficult to interpret more detailed drawings, mainly in trying to work out how various parts were orientated in three dimensions.  The underside is proving particularly difficult.
    • Mike, having read your latest, and referred back to my “primitive “ efforts of 4 years ago, I can plainly see why your approach of “Research first” speeds up modelling with accuracy! My model was based almost entirely on the side elevation in Mike Sharman’s book.  Your cross section drawings have clearly demonstrated the deficiencies in this method!   So, back to the CAD.  Fortunately I keep stl files of all components, but it’s still a lot of interesting work - already started, at the
    • Very informative, Mike. I find these early engines quite instructive, because they show off more clearly the fundamentals of a locomotive.   And I like those external suspension arms, very stylish actually - especially in your rendering.
    • That's a good idea. Bud's Trucking Company looks very suitable as one of those buildings that both give a purpose to a couple of sidings and at the same time serves as a facto backscene. A good choice by Walthers for a kit.
    • That really made me smile Mike.  Plainly the rubber suspension must've worked, but how well and what maintenance issues there were with it would have well and truly lost to the mists of the past by now I suppose. At least there is the sectional drawing in The Engineer as a reference as without that much of these amazing engines construction would be a complete mystery.     It's most certainly doing that, - excellent work Mike and I'm looking forward to further developments.
