Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

N-gauge "Wolds-End" now has lights!

Well trying to get everything done and dusted ready for Mansfield Exhibtion in April.   Lights are now wired up! Still waiting for some more passengers to turn up, but it's very close to getting there. Takes a bit of time before things start to run OK...with the small shunters anyway.   Here is the photo of the two layouts together, just to prove I'm not taking photos of the same one I just need to make the final finishing touches to both.     Here are a few of mini Wolds-End lit up

Kyle - First train runs...sort of...

Update - Its been a while since I updated partly due to work commitments but also because I assumed that people were probably getting fed up reading about my track building soap opera...I know I was.   So finally after a few more trys, scrapping the turnout last posted, I constructed them using a few PCB sleepers around the common crossing area. This is the bit I am still struggling with but at least it completed the turnouts. Obviously my preference was to complete this layout using solely EA

Road Bridge pt 3

Final progress before I head off to Tignes & Val D'isere for a week.   The bridge is coming along very nicely. Starting of with the deck, this is 80thou plasticard glued into position with Evostick. It was glued roughly into the centre of the bridge structure with a 10mm gap either side (simply because it wasnt wide enough!) pavements were added from more 80thou (giving a 6inch curb) this had curb stones carved into the edge before gluing into place. Once that was dry the next step

St. Simon's Workbench - Horse Box Painted

Hi Guys,   I've finally got round to painting the Horse box in the past couple of days, just got to paint the underframe and put some transfers on!     I'll see if I can get some Transfers at Ally Pally tomorrow.   On the Shingle Train front, two of the wagons need transfers (as you can see in the first photo, top left), so they'll hopefully be brought tomorrow as well. I'll be making the 'Sealed Door' Transfers myself, unless I do find someone that makes them! I'll be getting the res

1020x Progress

Having finally got a bit of modelling time I've also started putting the cab roof profile onto 10201 and 10203. Trying Daz clay this time to see if I can get a better finish than will milliput.     So far the finish seems nicer but its a right pain to get Daz to stay stuck to anything while being shaped, that or there is a trick I don't know !

Saltney. Upper and lower Mill (possibly)

As suggested, a new little station has appeared by the loco shed along with a signal that has mysteriously sprung up . Must be the time of year. . As Steve has named the GW high level station Upper Mill, me and Kenny reckon the new station is called Lower Mill. I think Steve will get back to me on that one...     A nice Marcway curved point has also appeared near the junction. I think it was one of those "I've got one of these going spare/free if you can make any use of it Steve" things.

The real Ouse Viaduct - what we're building in 4mm

No compromise, no shortcuts - this is what we're building in 4mm. The real thing is over 440m long and up to 30m high, so the model will be about 20ft long.   Here are some of my own photos from our initial field trip last November, but if you Google images under Ouse Viaduct, Ouse Valley Viaduct, or Balcombe Viaduct there are loads more, some of them showing the whole thing in one go.

Coach Underframe

Bit more time working on the Thompson over lunch. Botched up the underframe out of some Ultima bits, a proper version of this is going to need some tweaking but most of it works out as is.     Now what colour should the interior be ?     I've also finally resolved the problem of the 57 with split gears. After various circles with parts and service suppliers who said they couldn't get the bits for it and that they were not available, plus no email response from Bachmann I eventually phone

Vinyl cutting coach sides

I've been playing with the vinyl cutter and Thompson stock. As the Thompson stock is very similar in ends and profile to the Mark 1 it seemed a perfect thing to use the clear plastic shell from the Farish Mark 1 coaches for. Especially with new better Mark 1 coaches on the way.   The coaches were drawn with the gimp and then pasted together using a small program which assembles them and generates three images, one is a colour printed sheet which is like the coach sides it reads but with areas

33116

I mentioned last week the intention to start building up a small 1998 Class 33 fleet for the new layout (along with the rationalisation of my existing post 2000 33 fleet.)   The first of the new locos is 33116Hertfordshire Rail Tours in BR Blue   The planned work: - Correcting livery errors - Painting unpainted parts - New fuel tanks - Bogie spring modifications - P4 & DCC   The livery errors are concentrated on one side, (with the bodyside grill on the left hand side.) Further planning progress

John has been busy stitching together a 10th scale 'moquette' of the whole ensemble so that we can get a better overall picture in 3D and experiment with different configurations. Usually you would do this at quarter scale but the house isn't big enough   Meanwhile we've also decided to go straight for the full scale version of the Ouse Viaduct rather than spend time on an interim version, so I've been deriving dimensions from photographs to go with our measurements of the bases of the pie

Let's get started

After a long time out I have eventually got the space and some time to build my layout. My study will become home to a Cornish China clay branch. Whereas I have always intended to model the late 80's to early 1990's recent announcements and new models have made me rethink slightly. Kernow's Well Tank and Dapols 63xx means the sixties have come into the picture. I will now intend to make the layout more ambiguous time wise in order to switch around the era being displayed. Out go plans for a drye

Road Bridge

A little more progress before work this morning, A quick test showed that it dosnt appear to need a central arch to support the brick work, the two arches along with the vertical at the bottom are enough to do the job on their own.   As a result I took a simpler option for adding the deck support, with a length of 80thou across the centre above the hight of the arch, and a triangular cross brace between the corner and the central spacer.   I am now debating whether or not I will use the same

Kit-bashed roof structure

The roof structure for the "The depot" has been underway for some time as I've been busy with other things, but it is now nearing completion (sketches of the goods depot can be found here). My original idea was for a large single span roof, but after ploughing through photos and obtaining some sound advice from fellow RMwebbers (thanks everyone!). I decided on multiple lesser spans instead, of which two are visible on the layout.         The structure is built from

Hornby class 73/0

The 2-Bil is nearly complete - I'm currently adding the vast number of rain strips to the roof. No photos as bits of white plastic on a white roof doesn't really photograph.   I've also made a start on my Hornby 73/0. This is it straight out of the box. The first step was to replace the overscale wheels with the Alan Gibson rewheeling pack. This is sold for EM, but can be used for finescale OO. The wheel profile is the same, and although the axles are too long this doesn't show. And the whe

100,000 Views - BRWS Episode 1

It had to happen eventually!   The British Railway Series: Episode 1 has just registered 100,000 views. It is the first of my videos to hit the six figure numbers, and after three long years, I'm delighted it's got there eventually.   Here's to the next 100,000 on Youtube!   Thanks to everyone on RMweb and elsewhere for their continued support and encouragement.   Simon

Road Bridge

Made a start on the road bridge at the station end of the layout today, with the construction of the core structure.   This is built from 80thou plasticard as a pair of boxes with the two arches connecting them. Once this is fully dry a central divider will be fitted to each side (along with a third arch) which will give further support to the 80 thou deck once it is added.   This will then be clad in South East Finecast embossed brick plastic (the prototype I have based it on appears to ha

Let there be light.

Decided that the layout needs some form of lighting. After costing out the streetlights, I decided to have a go at making my own. I will be putting them on two circuit. The night one will include the station and street lighting, plus some of the upstairs in the shops and the chipshop ,pub and cinema. The daytime one will do the shop interiors, goods shed. I purchased some white LEDs and copper tube for the street and station lights and tonight put together a prototype.   This is the design

OOn3 Ruston 48DS - chassis drawing.

Here's a drawing of the chassis frames. Apologies for the quality! The chassis sides were made from .025" brass strip, chosen over .016" to make filing easier and for a larger bearing area for the front axle. Spacers for the EM loco are Gibson and for the the OOn3 version I made my own from strip, 7.5mm wide. Bearings again are Gibson and are only fitted to the rear driven axle, small bearings on the OOn3 and large bearings on the EM version. (Gibson do 2 sizes of 2mm bearing). Note the co

Weathered Wagons - Experiments

A few recently completed wagons. Two of the 21 ton VBs are now done in contrasting styles, one fairly tidy and the other contrastingly scruffy. I've been experimenting with tinted varnishes (Humbrol Mattcote with Humbrol matt 100 or leather (62) blended with Metalcote Gunmetal and a touch of matt white in this case), applied with a brush rather than an airbrush since I don't have one to hand. This is built up in thin, transluscent layers with varying amouts of tin to get the colour balance I was
