Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

An old Wills kit

I found an old part built Wills 1804 saddle tank on Ebay the other day and decided to try and rescue it.I`m so pleased with it so far i thought i`d post it up.The chassis is a whitemetal casting designed for an XO4 type motor driving the front wheels but i`ve managed to fit aDS10 with a small flywheel, powering the rear drivers. After some tinkering(thank goodness for Romford wheels!)the little tank runs beautifully, the metal chassis and body providing just the right amount of weight for the picku

Class 50 upgrade

While waiting for some transfers for the class 47 (the wrong ones were sent and I've had to return them) I've been playing around with class 50 body I had to try and improve it. One aspect that I considered 'wrong' with the Farish moulding was that the front end was too flat (like it had been slapped in the face) and lacked the slight protruding nose under the front cab windows of a real class 50. So as well as opening out the exhaust outlets and body side windows and cutting out the circu

Saltney, All change!.

Well not exactly all change, but Steve's Station (reputedly going to be called Upper Mill; doesn't sound very ex GW to me..) has already been changed before it's even reached the serious tracklaying stage.     The original wide board which spanned all 4 storage roads and the hidden lines leading to the LM station is now only half it's original width and the retaining wall will be moved back to suit.       This has now exposed the inbound and outbound lines to the LM station which run

Barrow Road Update 4

I have spent some time assembling the front elevation of the shed but needed to wait to collect some amended parts - my fault - as I found a photograph showing an additional window by the office block. This window was only noticed when I enlarged a photograph of the shed interior - of course once observed it became very noticeable and I had to add it to the building.   The exterior view of this window is obscured partly by the office building itself and partly by the porch entrance to one of i

The potential full Monty

A bit more meat on the bone now from the previous 'vague' dimensions.   We've dispensed with the idea of a common 'Brighton' fiddleyard fed from both the north and from the Lewes Brighton platform, mainly because of the tight curves needed to get to/from the latter. Instead we have a separate shorter fiddle yard of 8ft for 'Brighton' on the basis that through trains via Lewes would only be loco + 4 coaches + van from Eridge (which also assumes an 8ft FY) or short coast route trains from Eastb

Light rail excursion around Frankfurt, 20 March 2010 - part 1

Hello all!   As promised, here is the first load of images from the excursion I've been on this past Saturday . The event took place to celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of the LRV types on the light rail network - or underground, if you will - in Frankfurt. A rather extensive Wikipedia article in German can be found here: Click. The event was organized by Frankfurt's Historic Tram Association (Click) where some of my friends are members - and therefore the excursion was as much a gatheri

Fill 'er up

Filling in the gaps between the hood supports has started. This proving to be much harder work than I'd expected: there's a lot of sanding away then filling back in where I've taken too much off, or where there are surface blemishes. Nevertheless, I do think that it's getting there:     When the filler first goes on, it looks as rough as hell:     But it does come together - eventually (bear in mind that these photos are far bigger than life-size: the whole wagon is just on three inche

A little taster of the effect we're after

John (Re6/6) and I had a very constructive day today planning some layout configurations out and deciding on a few design criteria. More of that anon, aside that I checked with David (Bigcheeseplant) Lane how big the hall is at Railex , but here are some pics of EMUs on the short-term version of the Ouse Viaduct which will form one of the centrepieces of the layout.   4CEP comfortably dwarfed (the short-term version was built by the late Nigel Hunt for his home layout and is about 8ft long w

Signal Box

Having finally got some embossed brick plastic from South East Finecast at Nottingham yesterday, I've cracked on with building the signal box.   This is a fairly accurate representation of the box at Botley, although it has been built as a mirror image of the prototype so that it can be located on the other side of the mainline, I also made a slight mistake with the location of the lower door (my drawings I had created were exact for the prototype and I forgot to allow for that when cutting pl

Something briefly different, 16mm/ft scale outside in the sun!

While progress continues indoors on various laser cut bits (update coming soon, promise!) I have fallen prey to a bout of impulse buying.   The result: two little battery powered locomotives which I couldnt help but buy. Today (Sunday) saw the first glimpse of spring in the garden, and in between shed reorganising and vital horticultural bits and pieces, the 'fleet' were introduced to the garden.   So far, my foray into the great outdoors (as an occasional distraction from fiddly 2mm model m

33103 Part 2

Just a brief update regarding 33103. Took delivery of some very nice nameplates from Fox Transfers in the week and have fitted them this evening. Along with carrying out the bogie spring modification. Loco is coming along well I feel, next up is the fibre glass roof panel. Stay tuned.

I've been given the go ahead!

Today I am very happy! As the title suggests, I have had permission to build Calshot Mk II. This decision was reached probably due to sudden brainwave this morning - when not in use, I could store Calshot Mk II in a movable unit with castors on the bottom. The unit would be 1m long by about 0.75m tall and 0.5m wide. There would be three spaces - the top space for the fiddle yard board(s) (because in theory it will be the lightest) followed by two spaces for the scenic boards.   This means I c

GT3 and 72XX progress

Well, for one reason or another I have not got a lot done recently or posted very much here on RM Web. I have, in the past 6 weeks made a little progress on a few projects however. My GT3 has got to the stage of painting, well primer at least, but will need some work still to sort out the blemishes the primer is showing up.     I went on the Missenden Abbey weekend again this year and made some significant progress with my PDK 72XX kit.     Hopefully I will get more time available to m

Nottingham Show

Having spent yesterday at the Nottingham show, I've finally got stocked up on some new projects to get cracking on.   First up the bargain of the day, a slightly damaged Hornby 1928 pullman bodyshell for £1. This is going to be rebuilt with some new etched sides in order to model Ibis for my VSOE rake. Will need to scratchbuild a new interior, and try and get hold of a cheap chassis to go under it (else scratch build one) along with the underframe and bogie modifications which were descri

Luggage painting

Another weekend over and where did all the time go? With no outstanding husband work due (lawn mowing, gutter cleaning etc) apart from baby minding and nappy changing I resolved to get some modelling done. On Friday night I put together a shopping list for a model shop tour the next day. My Saturday departure was delayed by an unannounced visit by a doting grandma and aunty to see young Dougie. Leaving 3 hours later than expected I commenced my 300km round trip. Yes, 300km! I could have wa

Mega Update!

Right, I only just realized how much modelling I have been doing, and I have yet to post any of it. I better change that then...   First up is something from last year, a caboose where I off-set the position of the cupola from the center.         A before and after picture.   Shay No 1 now has a hand cut wood load. The loco has since been weathered.     Inspired by an article in the Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazette, I decided to make a track cleaner for my layout; foll

Rannoch Station Roof

Hi Everyone,   I have not really bothered to update my blog quite as I should. I am continuing to document the building of Rannoch in the layout topics section for anyone that is interested showing all the stages of the build and the techniques I have used as well - it may be of use to some of you and comments and advice is always welcome as it is helping me to get the layout to the standard I want to achieve - well hopefully that is the plan! The roof of the station has now taken shape and I

Coal 21 VB

Not much progress recently due to all sorts of other distractions (skiing holidays, parties, boring stuff like that) but I've managed to get a few wagons ready for painting today.   A Parkside BR van built as the Fruit van version using the optional ventilators. It's also had the solebars replaced with the plate fronted ones from the ever useful PA16 underframe kit. The yellow van is a Dapol ex Airfix "LMS van" which is actually a BR diagram 1/204. I bought a job lot of "second" bodies from a

At last, a day in the shed!

Having not had a proper day/weekend in the shed since Christmas (generally due to too much time being spent on the real thing), I managed to get a number of jobs done today, and have done far more than anticipated.   Over the past few weeks I've slowly but surely got the landscaping nearly finished and have made a start on putting down a bit of scenic cover. On Friday, a box arrived with 7 Packets of Peco Platform Edging along with some ramps, which I've been waiting on so I can make a start o
