Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Delph - a step(s) in the right direction.....

After the electrifying excitement of wiring the board and actually driving a loco up and down, it's back to the coal drops, plastic and solvent. Mmm...., does smell quite nice - no, not really! Anyway, the steps up the side of the retaining wall have been made and fixed in place. Unfortunately, these are a figment of my imagination because I could not find any information about how they actually looked. Still got the capping blocks to fit atop each side wall and create some wear on the front edg

More finished wagons and a cheat for corridor handrails

I've finished off some of the LNER wagons. I'm impressed with how well the 3H LNER opens have turned out, despite the many problems getting them square The LSWR stone block wagon is also finally painted, after months lurking in my shoebox of stuff to be painted!   I've also been working on an Airfix meat van. Not the most common prototype - only 100 of these were built, but for some reason they chose this over the more common 12t van. As with the cattle wagons this went together very we

His name? Number two....

I've finally finished the other cab (with the exception of touching in the LED wires in rail grey) - here's a quick shot showing the sunshades in position and the position of the cab lights.     Other bits visible on the cab roof are the brake position indicator, and the switches/circuit breakers above the cab door.   Next stage is to finish off the filling and filing of the main body sections, before assembly and further filling, but more of that anon...   Edit - To include photo of th

Gloucester Road - YGA weathered

So managed to spend some time yesterday weathering a YGA per the pics in my lasr post, then today took some photos on "New Street". Happy with how it turned out.   Here it is being shunted. This side was made to look like the upper picture on previous post         Here it is from the other side, tried to replicate the lower picture from previous post       I think they turned out pretty close to those in the pictures, three more to go. Finally here is an overall photo, reall

Another celebrity today...

Twice this month - celebrity visits to Paxton Road! Had a tip off that it might be worth heading down, so nipped out over lunch.   However I expect 33108 wasn't happy to be there - dumped by 33202 earlier in the day she's failed and waiting collection. Arriving at Paxton Road I grabbed a few shots from the road bridge before walking down to the yard and looking for someone to ask permission to grab a few snaps.       After I'd been given the nod (and a high vis) I grabbed a few shots f

Loose Ends: the Bridge

Although baseboard construction for Nowhere has been progressing rapidly, I've managed some progress on the embankment, bridge and station yard modules for Loose Ends. The basic form of the bridge module is now complete with the bridge itself, the river banks and the stone piers in place. Though I've yet to consider the river water or the backscene, and a central pier is yet to be built, possibly with Brunellian cylindrical supports. I'm still experimenting with different ways of painting the st

More Critter...thanks Captain

Some more progress on my Critter. I've been making slow progress with it when I can. Many thanks to the Captain, not only for the initial inspiration, but also providing me with a motor - cheers!     The completed-ish body, assembled for a test fitting     The underframe pieces, before...     And after!     Bufferbeams before and after     Both bufferbeams completed     What I hope it will look like!

Last Practice Before Watford

Well, last night we had our last practice session for the operators before packing the layout up to take to the Watford Finescale exhibition on the weekend of the 20th of February. It gave us an opportunity to not just brush up the skills of the new and existing operators, but also to test all those maintenance issues we have attempt to resolve since our last trip to Wigan just before Christmas. It's amazing how quickly the time has gone by since the Wigan exhibition and how little we seem to ha

Hornby Dean Goods DCC conversion

This is a great little engine but has the problem as with many Hornby engines that the motor is in the tender and the pickups are all underneath the boiler. Instead of a pin & spring that usually has one pickup connecting the tender to the engine there are two wires (painted black) that look like vacuum hoses a seperate plastic drawbar.   At the time when I started this one I was still fairly new to DCC conversion and bought a Lenz silver mini but if I was to do the conversion now I would

Twin Silo Presflo

Jumping ahead to other bits of Keyhaven that may or may not get built at some point this year I picked up some Presflos with a view to altering them to reflect the twin silo variety that were initially used for ICI salt traffic and latterly for Slate Powder.   Paul Bartlett's site again provides useful reference content with various angles of these wagons - http://gallery6801.f...et/c121408.html     The starting point was the Crown Cement liveried Presflo with the correct buffer types sho

Parkside RCH 5 Plank 12 Ton Wagon - Done?

Whilst waiting for the deltics to turn blue I've spent some time on the "loco coal" wagon for Summat Colliery. As I said before I've followed David Spencer's article in issue 06 of Hornby Mag (loosly) and have arrived at this:     Real coal over a lot of lead make it a heavy little wagon now, so should run well at Warwick/Nottm/Mansfield shows.   I think a little bounce sprayed weather black on the underpinnings should finish it off   Who would have thought that I would have heaped s

Kyle - on the Fiddle - Part II

Update - This evening some trains ran :icon_eek:...but only in the fiddleyard. The second session of working on these has now finished which included making the single cassettes and also wiring between the brass sleepers and the brass tubes below. Testing was undertaken to determine if the brass connecting rods performed okay and after resolving one stubborn dry joint :icon_mutter: the class 24 ran smoothly across the joints.   I now really need to get back to completing the two turnouts on t

Slow Progress

After a more off than on January I've finally got my backside into gear. I realised that I was getting behind (that's if I was ever up to date?) and have set myself goals on a monthly basis. The first of these is to have the track laid and operational at the end of February.   So far all the rails are in the blocked crossing area that makes up the east end of the platform. I'm really impressed with how it has come out, and running stock through it appears I only have one tweak to make where th

Rail heads in the concrete

The two points I ordered arrived today so they have been fitted and painted now. One on the main scenic board taking the total to 3, it makes it easier than keep swapping them around to work on different areas.           Vinyl tape has been applied to simulate the buried rail heads then given a couple of coats of clear lacquer to help seal it down.   On the other end of the layout the other new point has been fitted to the forward scenic section and the track painted.     Th

Normal Service Resumed.

After that brief stall on the location of the layout. The decision has been made to stay in North West Scotland. The arrival of another Tractor to the locomotive stable, in the form of 37/0 with Split Headcode, thanks to Oldfield Park.   So a list of the Jobs to do:   1. Re-model the fiddle yard, with a curved point to allow a 3 coach train with locomotive to fit in the fiddle yard. 2. Complete the Ballasting and Track weathering. 3. Paint a Backscene, and time to add some relief to the la

Clarification on my science fiction collection

In case anyone cares (and I know it's not to do with the layout, but the layout is laid out under the books - does that count?).   The collection there is my older collection. I daren't re-read Asimov, as last time I tried, instead of being awestruck at the ideas, I was terribly disappointed by the clunky writing style, and I don't want to spoil it.   I also have newer books, by the likes of Peter F Hamilton, Richard Morgan and Alistair Reynolds. And Iain M Banks.

The rest of the pictures thus far

These pictures show most of my interests. The bookshelves hold most of my science fiction collection, mainly Asimov, Clarke and E.E. "Doc" Smith, much of my texts from my classics degree and some of my railway books. And a couple of buses parked on the front.   Anyway, the first picture is the other end before being cleared:     Then the board cleared ready for track laying to begin:       Then three of work in progress getting towards the end result. This is not the end result

Third time lucky...

Right. I've found the problem. They were too big! I'll just do this one, of one end of the new board before I cleared it for work, then I'll get to the rest of them once I've seen whether this works okay!   Back soon, with luck.

Pictures...

The plan was to upload some pictures - I don't have enough words to paint one let alone several!   However, something has gone wrong within the Bomputer, so I can't upload pictures to here or to Flickr on Firefox or Interweb Explorer. Rest assured I'm taking them as I go on, but they'll all have to come as one big lump when I manage to make it all work.   For now, then, I have moved the various buildings around, as I realised that I couldn't see the engine shed which I've put between the br

Running trains

A visit from Kev Prince gave me some motivation to put a bit of temporary track down on Steinrücken (Still waiting for my current order of code 83 flexi...), and with some equally temporary wiring, I can now run trains around. The tortoises haven't got a feed yet so it's just a roundy roundy, but it's still very satisfying to have trains in motion. I can also start fine tuning joints. However, with the alignment dowels in place I have to now take the layout apart to get at the lower level, so h
