Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Running trains

A visit from Kev Prince gave me some motivation to put a bit of temporary track down on Steinrücken (Still waiting for my current order of code 83 flexi...), and with some equally temporary wiring, I can now run trains around. The tortoises haven't got a feed yet so it's just a roundy roundy, but it's still very satisfying to have trains in motion. I can also start fine tuning joints. However, with the alignment dowels in place I have to now take the layout apart to get at the lower level, so h

Concrete Hardstanding

Given that I am even too cheap to pay for cheap plastic track the hardstanding area hasnt even got any track !!   Step 1   Build up the baseboard to the under rail height (1/2" ply)     Step 2   Add some strips of 1/4" ply to create a rail edge     After checking a wagon rolled well in the newly create "rails"   Step 3   A further strip of plywood between the rails, some extra ply outboard of the rails to extend the concrete area, then dark brown paint in the rail groove,

Further drawings from the note book...

I'm going to start a 'Meadow Lane' blog and forum topic now things have progressed but until I can put a thorough post together I thought I may as well share my latest doodlings...   First of all a more detailed track plan - nice and simple! Off to the left will be two cassettes and off to the right will be a sector plate linking the front and back lines together.   And after my last post which faced the shed here are some more views of the other end, facing towards the crossing. The build

Low Level progress

After playing around with various old maps, planning portal and some aerial photos I seem to have established that the area I want to model be approx 2.7m long to scale. This takes in the area from Sun Street bridge to the south facing wall of the main station building. I'm considering whether it might be necessary to trim this down closer to 2.4m by reducing the gap between the bridge and the end of the station buildings. The big concern however is the width of the layout. To fit this in to

Judith Edge Steelman Royale frame detailing.

Resin is used for the axleboxes and the damper brackets and hornstays, as well as other detail parts. The damper brackets sit above the axleboxes in half etched recesses on the frames and need to be superglued in place before the axleboxes are fitted. On the photo below both damper brackets are fitted but only the right hand axlebox. On the left side the hornstay is fitted, the instructions state that these should be fitted between the horns but studying photos shows them to be fitted to the bot

Hythe Parkway - New Arrival

Hi Guys,   Having, for many months, complaining about the running qualities of my Bachmann BR Blue Class 08 (it was very poor, but we tried everything!), we have brought a new one!   It is a Hornby model, in Cotswold rail No. 08847, which we picked up for 45 pounds.   It liked this model because of two reasons:   1.) It had the high level air pipes, which are suitable for a 3rd rail fitted layout   2.) The Cotswold Rail means that I can say it's on hire to which ever company I chose

Mermods

I picked up a Flangeway Mermaid at the weekend and although it has a lot of positives the big negative for me was the solid panel on top of the chassis - see cnw6847's post which detracted from the fineness of the rest of the model. Given the price at GBP15.95 I'd have expected something a little more but having looked at it I felt comfortable that something could be done to improve it.   Step 1 - Separate the wagon body from the supporting frame, maybe it should unclip but I could see glue re

Noisy gronk

Just finished installing a Howes LokSound micro in my Christmas present - a Cotswold Rail 08 intended for duty as the Whitemarsh Yard pilot. It wasn't particularly fiddly, only a couple of hours' work really, although I underestimated the care required to cut out the body shell behind the front grille. I started off drilling the four corners and thought I could then cut through the edges with multiple passes of a knife - bad idea A slight slip left a mark on the warning stripes, but it isn't to

Judith Edge Steelman Royale pipes, pipes and more pipes.

At the moment I'm going to concentrate on the footplate/chassis detailing. So today I've been looking at the bufferbeam pipework. There are 4 pipes each end for air and stuff. I've used Hornby pipes from their class 31, available as spares, part number X5326. Mine came from Abbiegails Hornby Spares, so cheap that I bought 4 packs. Well, they might come in usefull again... The pipes as supplied will not fit, they need bending out away from the buffer beam. Easily done by holding the plug end, the

GRAND OPENING: (Victoria) 'Bridge over the Kitchen Sink'

Big event today, and in its own small way, well worth the wait!   First, a reminder of what I am trying to recreate, on a shelf, in N gauge:   Victoria Bridge, just south of Arley on the Severn Valley Railway, half an hour by bike from my front door...   The Corel Draw file has now succesfully found its way into a laser cutter, and produced two main components, the structure from thin ply, and the detail layer from thin card.   The detail layer was then, carefully, stuck on using thi

O Gauge - Further Work

Evening all,   Since yesterday's post, I've been working all evening tonight on the layout, mostly on the scenery but I've also made the rest of the kits I brought for this, a Vent van and a Toad Brake Van. Both went together as well as the other truck (meaning that the fourth and final truck for the layout will also be from the peco range as that's all it will be able to hold and a engine). While they were drying, I have brick papered my Station (which has improved it a huge amount) and adde

Cold crisp mornings on Paxton Road

I'd heard via a reliable source that celebrity green 37411 was on the bi-weekly Didcot - Worthy Down MOD working this morning so on my way out grabbed my camera...   I was glad I did as I managed to grab a few detail shots that might help anyone modelling a 37 based on the Bachmann model Just a light load today - traffic really seems to be dwindling, and in the 7 years since I last made the trip down we find just a solitary VKA making up todays load and a VDA down in the headshunt.

Sprinting ahead in N

I've recently been backdating a couple of the new Dapol Sprinters into something a little more suited for the Sectorisation-era layout that is starting to reach fruition.   As the green around the nose shows, this is a former Central trains 153 that has been revinyled but needs a little touching up here and there. Where's my silver-grey?   A 156 in Regional Railways Central "Express" livery. This really suits these units - the chromed window surrounds makes the livery look far smarter

An introduction to my layouts

Introduction I first created this blog back in early November but only now am beginning to populate it with information about the development of my layouts. Such is the rate of development of this side of my modelling activities Now, I say layouts, but this is really just an account of work in progress that I hope will one day lead to two three, perhaps three four*, working layouts.   * update 8th Feb 2010: Despite appearances, this is not intended to become a new version of the Monty Python

Small scale property development IV

Exhibition flat now open for viewing!       The orginal building on which the model is based is actually 4 stories high, and I'm gald I cut it down by one, otherwise I think it might have been too imposing in it's surroundings. It would have also meant more window frames to make.....!   I haven't quite decided what to do about interior yet. On a few of the windows I have tried gluing photos behind but I'm not sure whether I'm happy with that as a solution yet.   Tom.

Building plan

I've got one more kit to build which will fit in with what's there already, a Metcalfe goods shed. After that, it's what I can make with what I've got. I've got a whisky tube which looks like it would make a good fermenter, and with judicious application of pipes and chimneys left over from other kits and a dose of imagination to suggest that there's more brewery out of sight I think I can cobble something vaguely plausible together. Bearing in mind that this is yet another sketch, if it all

2010 Challenge

I think I may be back in the 2010 Challenge.   "The Mall" is too far gone in my head. The concept is a good one and has proven popular, but the trackplan is lacking some interest and the operation as with a modern terminus, albeit space saving, is undeniably dull. So, been having a doodle..   The plan's are the same, except for scale:   4mm, 4' x 1' (48" x 12")   7mm, 8' x 2' (96" x 24")   The intial concept is that of a small terminus on a short estate Light Railway, linking the p

Sound Chip re Blown

Hi all   As a present to myself (40 again!) I sent off my oldest chip a SWD class 47 to Howes to be reprogrammed with their class 47 sounds. Excellent value for money and well worth it. Much clearer tones and more sound options that I can mess around with. I particularly like the fact that the air tank tick is on a seperate sound function (8) so you can leave it on as long as you like. The existing recording went off after a few seconds. Also more variety in horn tones and a better take off so

Judith Edge Steelman Royale beacon conundrum.

After watching the Bicester DVD its bacome very obvious that these locos were fitted with flashing beacons on the roof. And there are 2 round vents? up there as well. The vents should be straightforward being just flat discs, the only problem estimating the size and position, but as for the beacon... There are, as I see it, 4 options; 1, leave it off. Trouble is I've already told you... These seem to have been removed at some stage, possibly when the locos were painted purple with white stripe

And More Electrics...

Hello   Got a bit more done this weekend. Saturday was spent in Stafford operating what is in my opinion one of the best running 2mmFS layouts ever. Today I carried on with the box that holds all the mains stuff.       Its nearly there. I have another transformer to fit inside (for the LENZ thingy), the connector on the top, and then wire it all up. I will be really glad when all of this is out of the way so I can then concentrate on more exciting things!   While I am here, does any

Laser Cutting Commences: N Gauge Victoria Bridge

Hi All,   after the fun and games with Ivatts and Toplights, time to create something for them to run across!     I have finally got around to converting my bridge silhouette into a corel draw file, ready to feed the laser cutter. Something actually tangible should be appearing this week.   It will be an imposing structure, even in 1/148 scale, it will be about 40 cm long!

Still scribbling...

Well it's addictive isn't it...   Whilst my daughter was drawing lovely pictures of her bike and our house I was drawing another sketch of what my industrial diorama mini layout looks like in my head. You can see the shed has morphed from purely based on the one at Ellesmere Port to a cross between that and the one at Mode Wheel, the hub of the MSC Railway's Trafford Park and docks complex. The tankers are TTAs and represent the traffic from Eastham refinery - the track they're on in my head
