Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Update Pictures.

As promised now that the server seems to be stable. All week when I have tried to update my blog, I have been unable to get on.   A couple of boxed of the Bachmann Scenescape Trees have been used to create an evergreen woodland. Along with Javis Flexible Drystone Walling.   Thank you to all those that have taken part in the poll, and if you haven't voted please feel free to, as the decision to move my layout situation from the far highlands of Scotland, to the South Kent Coast, is yet to be

Sand Dryer Ridge Tiles

I have now managed to add the ridge tiles to the sand dryer and in consequence have repainted parts of the roof. The roof on the buildings have been painted using air opaque Badger air brush paints which I apply using a brush. I tend to use a palate of their greys [nos 7.07 & 7.06] and black.           It started to rain whilst taking the last two photos.... spot (sorry!) the rain drops on the roof!   The sand dryer building & chimney is now finished apart from final wea

Playing with Plans

As mentioned in a previous post, both 4' halves of the baseboard are now assembled. Now dry the twin skin plywood design is VERY rigid, stronger than I had hoped ! A pair of patternmakers dowels have been ordered to get the two halves to align and I have some toggle clips to connect them together.   Having played (tested) some track on the two halves, I am now getting a better feel for how much space can be used.   I am quite happy with the layout on the left hand scenic board, but still un

20. Welcome to WagCam

The OO Garden Shed   By John Geeeee   I have just got a mini DV recorder to play with on the layout for a bit of fun. It is just small enough to be able to hold on the side of a wagon and for the size and memory the quality of the video seems quite good. Here is a pic of how I attach it It is a bit heavy so it does need a counter weight in the wagon:       So with a bit of playing to get the best angle and height so as not to drag I offer you the following videos to watch (you will ha

Judith Edge Hunslet - Soldering On

After a long stressful January, punctuated by Snow, Colds, Virus, friends and relatives in hospital, minding granndson for a week at a time, I have finally made a start on the build.   Michael Edge, quickly supplied the missing bushes. Thank you. I also took his advice to build a rigid frame.   I decided to make a tool to punch rivets, from odd bits hanging around. Its just a bit of threaded bar, a few bolts, a screw, and half a dozen larger diameter bolts for the weight. It managed to

Deltic Prototypes - Dapol Body Ready for Blue

So here it is the Dapol/Bachmann/A1 combo primed ready for painting       Love those A1 grilles. Now all I need is someone with an airbrush and lets see if they can be finished for the Warwick show, or maybe the Nottm Show   If anyone wants to take the Lima version off my hands then it will be in "Bring and Buy Corner" on Summat Colliery at a forthcoming show

Interior design

I've had a crack at weathering the nose bulkhead this evening, and I must admit that I'm rather pleased at the way it's turned out - used, but not too grubby (please excuse the rather cruel enlargement). Can you spot which bit has had the attention from the fitters boot?   Most of the effects have been done using gouache, but powders have been used in a couple of places to tone down the effect.   Engine room bulkheads are next.   Edit - I've taken a better, not so out of focus, pic

Judith Edge Steelman Royale steps and handrails.

I left the bottom steps off until now as they are rather fine. They are sprung into place and soldered in. Here's a pic of one still on the etch, nice! Onto the handrails. Stanchions are etched and are very fine, luckily spares are provided. Luckily I didn't need any, I have plans for the spares... 2 types of stanchion are provided, one with a hole in the top and one where the handrail sits on the top. Again the photos should make things clearer. There are also kickplates to be added; M

Underframe progress with 59004

Over the last two afternoons I've had a bit of fun knocking together the underframe for 59004. The finishing of the shell I've covered on old RMweb, and in a previous blog entry, and it's in this state that the model has sat since the last November or so. I had an urge to crack on with the underframe yesterday, so had to get on with it! Here are some piccies to illustrate where I'm up to, I'm not sure if I want to prime it, as that'll only show up all the slips and shortcuts even more!

Nonneminstre Coles Crane glazing.

Taking a break from the Steelman Royale I glazed the cab of my crane. I used 1mm perspex? laboriously filed to shape. I did scrap a few bits...     The glazing for the cab side (the door and the small windows either side) was prepared before the body was glued together so I could lay the side on a piece of glazing and scribe around the opening, before cutting and shaping the material and storing the finished pieces in a safe place. This was definitely a good move...     Back to the Ste

fiddle yard!

I have obviously now got quite a lot of stock for what is really not a very large layout. I also got a bit irratated by the fact I could only have two complete trains on the layout at one time. So I knocked up a small fiddle yard that sits on the end of the layout. It has no legs (mainly so I can pile junk under it!) and is supported by a strut that comes out from the main layout legs. Add this to the bolts holding it in position and it becomes very solid. I mean you wouldn't want to lean o

Cul Uisge - Kyle in 4 feet - Class 24/1s

The signature loco for the Kyle line in the 1970s was the class 24/1. I already have one 24/1 as D5116 which was converted by Rippers (and can be seen here D5116) but I fancied doing one of my own. Having done some searching I have decided to model 24115 as it was at the end of it's working life as seen here : http://80s-and-earlier.fotopic.net/p47427012.html   The basis for my 24/1 is a standard Bachmann 24 in BR Blue plus the Brassmasters conversion parts.     First up, the domes are re

Two Shay! Part 2

My two shays are progressing well, so I thought I would show you what I have done.     I thought I would add railings to number 1s bunker, this involved cutting the flair (?) off.     Backwoods parts added to the bunker ready for the paint shop.     After a coat of black paint. I still need to add a wood load, but as I have never made one before, can anyone give me some tips on how to make a half decent one?     Number 3 is looking good. It now has a westinghouse pump and c

Judith Edge Steelman Royale axlebox horns.

4 per wheel, 16 in total. The inner ones are attached to a pair of spacers laminated together. To locate everything accuratly the inner horns and spacers are rivetted, the rivets in one part locating in the half etched holes in the other. The frames are also rivetted to locate the outer horns, which aren't rivetted. Perhaps some photos might help... And an outer horn in place; A little tricky to position, I used a crocadile clip to hold the outer horns in place. Crude but it worked...

Deltic Prototypes - Dapol Bogies Revisited

Something about the Dapol/Bachmann DP1 did not look right. Only when I put the Lima body back on it's chassis did I realise that the Dapol body was far too high, buffers were a good 2mm up on what they should be Easy job to file off the ridges on top of the Bachmann chassis.   Then I looked at the bogies, they overhung the front and the steps were 2.5mm out of line with the doors. Ideally I would have liked to have moved the bogie pivots back but this would have been an almightly job not wit

Gone threading!

Just a short note to say that the blog is no longer being updated, but I have copied everything into a layout thread which hopefully can be found here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/topic/8486-mawgan-porth-o-gauge-brs-north-cornwall/   If the link doesn't work, a search on Mawgan Porth from the main forums page will work!

Broken my lights!

I've had my decoder tested, and it works fine, but I can't get the white light to light on my dummy power car. I can't work out how my meter works either, so I can't check the light with that. I've got the control desk out and I've tried touching it on the contacts on the chassis by hand with the power on and I can get the red lights but not the white ones. Could I have broken it already? And if so, why only the white one? At the weekend I'll try everything I can think of, then pester my fat

Saltney, On Shed.

While I battled with the wiring, Steve next turned to adding more detail and atmosphere to the MPD, getting the turntable working well, making a control panel and wiring up some lights. More green lumpy stuff was applied and plenty of colour sprayed to blend it all in. To complete the scene, a Skytrex enginemans bothy was added and blended in after Steve worked his magic on it.

D I Why?

A combination of things in the title - do it yourself transfers and why am I going this far? I could have the body assembled by now, I reckon, but it is getting to a point where the extra work seems worthwhile - I just have to keep thinking 'it'll look great once it's finished!'.   The transfer making wasn't as tricky as I feared it might have been. I ordered some of the clear and some white paper from Crafty Computer Paper, which comes with fairly comprehensive instructions. The first atte
