Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Started - Sides and ends detailed ready for assembly

After being away for a few days trying very hard to find further information for my Q7 build I decided that this could wait no longer (I have to be honest and say I am surprised I have resisted so far).   Any way I took it out of the box for real yesterday and started to ad the detail to the sides ending up tonight with the sides and ends below to show for my efforts.   After reading the Derby line thread and enquiring of Tony (Diabateg) where he got his cast door stops from the reply being

A start on the coal drops

Track laying continues and I am now starting to work on the coal drops. No photos of these in full condition have come to light, so the model will be a bit generic. I know there were 6 cells with brick (with stone inserts here and there) dividing walls/support pillars but have no idea of how the track support structure looked like, so I'm basing mine on an open wooden structure with beams under the rails and angled bracing struts (as evidenced by recesses and stone bearing pads part way up the p

13. Down Our Street

The OO Garden Shed   By John Geeeee   This is the row of terraced houses and the church yard at the back of the layout on top of the tunnel section. They are all Metcalfe models and I have added gutters and drainpipes for extra detail. The top of the tunnel is in two pieces to make it easier to take off in case of a derailment. Therefore I have to be careful how I set things up on top so that I can still take the top off in two halves.                 I added part of a P

I must be bonkers (Pacer detailing continues)...

Well unlike some other people I've had less modelling productivity this weekend...   Apart from ordering all my P4 bits and bobs last week, very exciting, and my Christmas present arriving on Saturday (the Railfreight 37 with sound and a Dynamis controller) it's been a quieter week. Prior to the present wrapping evening ahead of me I dug out my Pacer for some modelling relaxation and to see what I could do in 20 minutes. Rather than start on the second car fitting handrails (which can easily s

How much P4 can you fit into a small room

I thought I'd put up a few pictures of Empire Basin, my bit of East London in P4.   David       This is the view from the door to the spare room. The minimum radius is down to about 40". It is rather nice to sit on the PC while trains go round and round.     The fiddle yard is vertical but only 1 metre long. The unit moves on brackets designed for rack-mounting computers and is counter balanced by a large lump of MDF.     The Riceworks J65 sits on the loop with a brake van in f

Penhydd.........Scenics Part 1

I have often been asked what do you use for the long grass and appearance of overgrown trackwork ? Well some of you will remember a tutorial I did on the old Rmweb, in which I explained how I used Silflor scenic mats and fibres, so i thought perhaps an update might be welcome ?   It was Chris Nevards fantastic scenic work here on the forum which convinced me to try Silflor, I had come across the product before but had not seen it used as well as on the layouts created by Chris. Point(less) Update

With flights of fancy put on the back burner for the time being, where they should be, a milestone has been reached in the construction of Bisley Junction - the pointwork is more or less complete!   The most challenging piece so bar was the B7 FB crossover:   Which I'm rather pleased with, closely followed by the two bullhead rail points - flat bottom rail is so much easier to work with as it's obvious which way up the rail goes!   The only thing left to do do all of the turnouts is to f

British American Class 31

Hot off the press from my trusty supplier John Peck at Precision, comes the livery of the UK's latest open access operator, BARS....       More pictures here....   I took this photo earlier today, on the only non-raining 5 mins we've had all day in the South Cotswolds!   Stroudie

Normal Service will be resumed shortly!

Hi all,   Been quite ill recently! A swine flu bout, followed by an infected lung and throat. Happily after four weeks of bed rest, antiobiotics and lots of strepsils and lemsips, I'm feeling much better and raring to do some modelling (if funds allow before Xmas!)   Until next time (with a full and proper update).

Feeling blue & plastered on a Sunday afternoon !

How do central heating systems know when theres a cold snap on ?   Just about to go out and purchase some bits for the board including the track, Lenz system & the first bag full of assorted scenics and the boiler packs in !   So, as well as being cold this weekend the wallet is bracing itself for the plumbers bill next week and not a visit to the model shop. This challenge really is turning into a challenge and then some !   Good job we have plenty of time so a bit of saving wont do a

N gauge LT bus fleet

My N gauge LT bus fleet is starting to grow. And with the promised Farish Leyland Nationsl single deckers due (gawd knows when) and the four DMS now on order I'll have a reasonable fleet. There's still work to be done on the DMSs, incliding re-assembly, but they do have a very bland livery with no white or grey stripes to add a bit of relief to the plain all over red. Also correct route numbers and destination blinds don't seem to be available so I'll have to make the most of the limited choice

Brackets and Brakes

Finding a small box I have put the gussets aside for now.   The instructions now continue adding more detail, the front footplate hand-grabs, more lamp brackets, more resin mouldings (the lights) and the buffers. As already indicated I do not like adding this sort of detail until the heavy handling is complete and I really don't like adding buffers and their springs until after the model has been painted - or just for show. So all these will be left off for now and hopefully remembered later.

This is what its all about

This is the latest blog entry from 7day model railroad. Everyone needs to read it. ...Todays post was going to be about the same steady performance of the layout at day two of the Princeton show and what tweaks I need to do to the layout before the next time I show it. Sure enough the layout performed as well as yesterday. But that's not important. Today was one of the most rewarding days I have ever had exhibiting a model railway and it was all down to two small children. Jeremiah and Brandon

Introducing a Lord...

...30850 Lord Nelson that is   Due to the weather I was unable to photograph her outside (did it in the conservatory instead), but here she is in slightly workstained condition, with a tender overflowing with coal and a little bit of limescale and oil thrown in.     That's all for now...

Modelling development

I've made a start on the little modern signal control box at the west end of the through lines. I'm not totally happy at the way it's turning out - dut to my lack if modelling ability - but I'll see what the finished item looks like as there is still a lot to do;         I've also managed to get hold of one of those 1:150 scale KMB Daimler Fleetline buses (the old London Transport DMS) as recommended by Bernie Taylor and I'm very happy with it. It dismantles in to the consitituent parts

Taking the Fast Line to Widnes

A pleasant few hours was spent at the cabin yesterday, in the company of some guests ( = friends) from the Merseyside club.   We are frequently in the cabin so anyone is welcome, by prior arrangement just in case we are out and about.   After the guys had left I snapped a couple of photos of the REX Fastline 66/3s (and a car train which was passing, again taken with the cheap snappy so no real depth of field but still give the ideas for some interesting possible shots.   No details have be

Backscenes

I've made a firm decision regarding era and railway company. Circa 2000, DBAG. This allows me to run most of my existing stock with just a few decals applied, giving purpose to a lot of models which would otherwise just sit in their boxes.   After much googling for images to make a composite picture for a backscene, I actually found something very nice on CG Textures in the landscapes category. There's some seriously rich pickings on their site, and I have got almost all the signs I need from

They're Taking Shape!

The baseboards are taking shape, perhaps a little more slowly than I would have liked but a couple of stupid errors have slowed things down a bit, the biggest of which was briefly thinking I was modelling in 1mm:1ft!   I've started by concentrating on the areas which sit below track level, and especially on the area around the River Irwell. You can see an aerial show of the area as it is now on Google Maps.     View of the River Irwell as it flows under the lines just west of the station

Lighting up the population!

Well, getting there very slowly!   Quite a few lights added to the layout, along with some people. The figures are the Bachmann Scenecraft ones, not cheap at ??5 for 6 but very effective and excellent detail.   A few more station staff to fit, then onto populating the warehouse.     The picture below shows the Scalescenes Newspaper stand that came in the Hornby magazine, you can just make out the folded newspapers on the counter. I just glued a figure inside and added the light into t

More Shock open progress andsome finished stuff

The shock open progresses slowly. I cut down the ends, leaving some of the buffer beam behind to represent the floor. The body was then assembled around a floor made of planked plastic sheet, as the drawing in BR wagons (and photos of the full length non-shock version of the prototype) show a wooden floor. Finally, 40 plasticard was added underneath to represent the (quite thick) outside of the floor on these wagons. This was done in 3 sections to avoid having to cut out bits to clear the m

Station re-work

Hi everyone, Got more track and points today, so i have ajusted the station to how i want it to be, its not finished yet by any means, the shop was short of the point i need Apologies for one or two blurry pics:       Class 156 works its way over the new points:   And a bit of a scenic shot which i think looks quite good :   Im hoping to make a small terminus somewhere on the station, possibly coming off the outside line. Hopefully will get some more done tomorow Ch
