Barrow Road Update - Wheel Drop

The extension to road 14 includes the hydraulic wheel drop and I have just made a visit to the History Centre in Chippenham to obtain copies of drawings of the electrical operated one from Bricklayers Arms [ now on the Mid Hants I believe] and another generic LMS unit produced by Ransome & Rapier of Ipswich. I have yet to find one for a hydraulic version. As a result there is a space left - 11ft 6in - on this road while I await a response from Manchester Records Office who have some informat

Barrow Road Update - The Pits 2

Work has progressed on the turntable pits and I now have 23 of the 24 pits fitted. Only road 14 remains to be made but this is causing a minor problem as it is the long road which contains the wheel drop.   I know the shed had a hydraulic wheel drop which was situated on this road just outside the rear of the shed - it had a brick shelter with a corrugated roof - but I have been unable to find any information about it. If anyone can tell me which companies made hydraulic wheel drops or provide

Barrow Road Update - The Pits

Having been effected by the Volcanic Ash Cloud - I should be in Canada - I now find I have time to start the inspection pits inside the roundhouse.   The task has been made easier by a set of laser etched sides and bases from York Modelmaking such that the task is reduced to one of colouring and assembly. The pieces are sprayed with primer, coloured and assembled using a jig and clamps.   Strips of 4 x 2mm plasticard were first added to the top of the side walls to form the timber baulks on

Barrow Road Update 6

The new floor for the roundhouse has been used as a template to cut out the turntable pit and the inspection pits using a router. At the same time all the pits outside the shed have been cut as have the four inside the Workshop - a total of 38.   I need to add a few more pieces of 6.5mm ply under the turntable to strengthen this area - in the meantime I must remember not to lean on this area of the board!   Here are a couple of photos showing the result. The cut out for the shed pits remind

Barrow Road Update 5

Having collected some more parts from Chris at the Ally Pally show last weekend, noteably a new shed floor, I have spent some time this week marking out the positions for all the inspection and disposal pits on the layout in preparation for a routing session.   I made a visit to the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre in Chippenham and obtained digital copies of a number of ex Swindon Works Drawings including the 60ft Cowans Sheldon turntable for Barrow Road, Water & Drainage diagrams a

Barrow Road Update 4

I have spent some time assembling the front elevation of the shed but needed to wait to collect some amended parts - my fault - as I found a photograph showing an additional window by the office block. This window was only noticed when I enlarged a photograph of the shed interior - of course once observed it became very noticeable and I had to add it to the building.   The exterior view of this window is obscured partly by the office building itself and partly by the porch entrance to one of i

Barrow Road Roundhouse Update 1

I have added the rest of the templot track plans and added a few locos for atmosphere - most of them are still in RTR state and will need chassis conversion to P4. The templot is in need of some tweaking as it was done with a 55ft turntable inside the roundhouse before I discovered that a 60ft Cowans Sheldon unit was installed in 1927.         The Jinty on road 8 is a P4 converted Bachmann as is the WD on the exit road. All the rest will need converting.

Barrow Road Roundhouse Update

I collected the shed building from Chris at the Watford Show and have now had a chance to have a trial assembly of the building on the boards...... here are a few photos.

Barrow Road

It has been a while since I was able to post anything so here is an update of work done over the past week. I have managed to lay exactoscale 5mm foam on the three end boards, add the templot trackplan as an overlay and finally lay the track on the main line. This end of the layout is where the main line starts to rise to attack the 1 in 60 Fishponds bank and modelling this section of the incline has proved a challenge getting the gradient consistent over the length of the pair of boards. Barrow Road Boards update

It's a while since I did any work on the boards, so with the temporary lull in work on the shed buildings I decided to spend some time on the boards. The last work was cutting the styrofoam to produce the incline base on the boards north of Barrow Road road bridge. It is at this point that that incline begins at 1 in 89 rising to 1 in 60 up the bank to Fishponds Station. The styrofoam has been cut and fixed to the boards. Note the position for the North Exit from/to the shed where the trackwor

Office Complex - the finished article

Here are some photos of the finished building - except for the 2 chimneys and vents previously mentioned. Final weathering will take place once everything is built and in place on the layout.   Thanks for all the positive comments.   The next installment will be the roundhouse and workshop itself.               I now have to wait a few weeks before I take delivery of the main shed and workshop...... watch this space.

Office, Mess Stores - further photos

Here are a few more photos of the office complex.           All that remains now is to paint the roof tiles.   There are two additional brick built chimneys to add to the higher of the two hipped roofs and two vents/chimneys. These will be made and added at a later stage.

Office, Mess, Stores Roof

Having finished the sand dryer I can now return to adding the roof to the Office complex. As with the sand dryer I chose to use plasticard over the mdf sub roof and set about cutting and glueing pieces of 2othou plasticard to form the hipped roof. I also attached lengths of plastic rod on the ridge joints in preparation for the ridge tiles. The plastic rod also makes it easier to accurately cut and fit the tiles.     You will see I have added roof glazing - I forgot to cut the openings for

Sand Dryer Ridge Tiles

I have now managed to add the ridge tiles to the sand dryer and in consequence have repainted parts of the roof. The roof on the buildings have been painted using air opaque Badger air brush paints which I apply using a brush. I tend to use a palate of their greys [nos 7.07 & 7.06] and black.           It started to rain whilst taking the last two photos.... spot (sorry!) the rain drops on the roof!   The sand dryer building & chimney is now finished apart from final wea

Sand Dryer Tiles

The self adhesive tiles produced by York Modelmakers are excellent, easy to use and look the part. The last building I tiled, Sheep Pasture Engine House, had individual tiles which I cut from 5 thou plasticard. They look good but would be a daunting method to adopt for all the roofing on Barrow Road Shed so I am pleased with the results produced by YM's tiles.   Anyway here are a few photos of the Sand Dryer during the tiling process.             I have since noticed I forgot

Sand Dryer Roof

I have now received the sub roof parts for the sand dryer and so decided to take a break from constructing the office complex to complete the sand dryer.   First I attached the mdf substructure to the locating lugs on the internal structure     then I cut pieces of 20thou plasticard to form the hipped roof and fixed these to the mdf.     the next task will be to add plastic rod over the joints before adding the tiles. These come in self adhesive strips which can be cut to fit using a

Assembly of Office, Mess & Store

Time to put the building together...   Here are the front and side elevations in their painted state with the glazing and doors added.{non available for the end elevation - I must contact the supplier}       The internal structure is made from 2mm mdf, slotted together and glued. I have given the viewable internal walls a coat of grey primer.     The corners of the walls are mitred together at 45 deg... here is a shot especiall for Missy - to show the corner joint.     The ro

Office, Mess & Stores Walls

I have now coloured the walls using my favoured method with coloured crayons. The Berol Karisma ones are no longer available so I have substituted some from the Faber Castell range which have proved to be better.         The building substructure is now assembled and I will add these walls to it shortly.

Office Chimney

At last... I can add another entry!   Here is the office chimney which I have constructed form some old Formcraft/Alan Gibson/C&L brick parts.     The chimney is constructed from 4mm scale english bond brickwork parts - see photo - which are placed over lengths of plastic rods, which fit through the holes in the brick parts, to assemble a convincing chimney. I have a stock of these parts which I have previously used to build the water tower on my Sheep Pasture layout.

Office, Mess, Stores - progress

I have been unable to post anything since Monday so I'll do this post while I have access.   Here is a good photo of the Office block; the section at the front with the lower hipped roof; whilst the Mess and Stores are at the rear, the stores being nearest to the shed building. The model is sectioned along the centre line of the Stores/Mess part of the building in line with the sectioned roundhouse.     I have made some progress with the two elevations which make up the model, namely the
