Barrow Road - STOP sign

I have spent some time researching the wording for STOP sign that is at the entrance to the roundhouse at Barrow Road.   This appears to be a standard sign at most Midland Roundhouses but obtaining a clear photograph has proved a challenge. Last night I found a good colour photo of such a sign at the entrance to Toton Shed and have identified the following wording.   MIDLAND RAILWAY NOTICE TO ALL (DRIVERS FIREMEN) AND ALL ??????????????????? STOP. ALL ENGINES ?????????? TO ENTER

Office, Mess & Stores Block

After having a few problems with postings I will take this opportunity to add a few photos of progress on the Office, Mess & Stores building at the front right of the shed.   This shows the parts of the kit with the roof sections at the top, the carcase to the left and the front and side elevation to the right, complete with the box at the top. This shows, from the top of the building downwards, the corbelling, the single string of bricks around the windows and the plinth. More to fo

Barrow Road Demo at Scaleforum

I have just about recovered from a very busy but enjoyable weekend demonstrating at Scaleforum with two of my friends from the Glevum Area Group, Morgan and Paul. I took two of the boards to the demo - limited space at this years show prevented me taking any more - these being the roundhouse/workshop board and the sidings board alongside the shed. A selection of locos and rolling stock was on view together with research material. Thanks go to Morgan for demonstrating his CAD drawings of the

Bristol Barrow Road - Lawrence Hill Signal Box - Update 7 - A night on the tiles

The kit of parts from York Modelmaking included a set of their self adhesive tiles of the type I used on the shed sand dryer and office complex. I could have used them again on the box but using at the available photos to measure the size of the prototype tiles I found they were 9 or 10in wide, whereas the self adhesive version are a scale 12in. I decided to use my tried and tested method using 5thou plasticard and set about making a plasticard jig to assist cutting individual tiles to a cons

Sand Dryer front elevation

More progress this afternoon with the front elevation of the sand dryer now complete. There are two 'I' girders above the window which I chose to fabricate from two pieces of brass section soldered together. The larger girder was cut and shaped from a piece of 4mm square section brass tube whilst the smaller one was cut from 3mm wide channel section.   Once finished the construction followed that of the end wall posted yesterday, with the only additional work required being the forming of the

Barrow Road - Rear Elevation

Having made about half of the total requirement of inspection and preparation pits for the shed I decided to have a break and try something different - after all you can have too much of a good thing!   I have managed to find the whereabouts of a drawing of the hydraulic wheel drop at Rose Grove Shed - I can recommend the National Archives website for those of you looking for original research material -   http://www.nationala...ew.asp?ID=B6200   as I found the set of drawings at Mancheste

Sand Dryer test colouring

I managed a bit of time today to carry out the test colouring of the end wall of the sand furnace. For a colour guide I chose to use some of my own colour slides from October 1965. These were taken using Agfa film which was always a little on the blue side so I have corrected this using Photoshop.     I have used an assortment of Berol Karisma crayons of various brick shades, some for the engineering brick and others for the more common 'red'. Having fixed the corbels I realised the crayo

Office, Mess & Stores Walls

I have now coloured the walls using my favoured method with coloured crayons. The Berol Karisma ones are no longer available so I have substituted some from the Faber Castell range which have proved to be better.         The building substructure is now assembled and I will add these walls to it shortly.

Brinkley at Blackburn

I have just spent an enjoyable weekend at the Blackburn Show with the Glevum Group exhibiting the group layout Brinkley where we won an award for the signaling on the layout.   Here are a few photos taken at the show.   Brinkley at Blackburn   Next weekend I am exhibiting my other layout Sheep Pasture - Cromford & High Peak - at the Cardiff Show at UWIC in Llandaff. Please come and have a chat if you are able to attend.

Barrow Road Roundhouse Update

I collected the shed building from Chris at the Watford Show and have now had a chance to have a trial assembly of the building on the boards...... here are a few photos.

Bristol Barrow Road - Ash Disposal Pits - Update 2

I have been unable to attach any photos to my blog for the past few days - hence the lack of any recent update. It appears to have reverted to the original attachment format so I shall take the opportunity to add some photos of the latest progress.   These photos show my chosen method of fixing the panels to the top surface of the pit walls using brass screws. I am pleased with the result.     Here are a few shots of the panels in position in relation to the shed building.

Sand Dryer Chimney

The drawings for the shed and all the associated buildings were made using a combination of plans, from maps I have in my possession, counting bricks from photographs and information from other sources. In the case of the chimney I got the drawing wrong.   The laser cut parts for the chimney were cut to my drawings to form a structure 44ft high tapering from 3ft square at the top to 6ft at the bottom. I then received a new photograph taken from a new angle and closer position....... where has

Sand Dryer Kit

It's been a few days since I last did any work on the model, not that I've been idle. I have been doing some more research with a trip to Bath Green Park Station to measure up and photograph the roof support columns. Thanks to the Taunton MRC with their Superb 'Bath Green Park' layout; seen recently at the Wigan show; I have a ready made source of white metal columns. A package arrived this morning from Colin alias Alan Gibson Mk2 complete with a Christmas card... a nice touch. I'll add a photo

Sand Dryer Ridge Tiles

I have now managed to add the ridge tiles to the sand dryer and in consequence have repainted parts of the roof. The roof on the buildings have been painted using air opaque Badger air brush paints which I apply using a brush. I tend to use a palate of their greys [nos 7.07 & 7.06] and black.           It started to rain whilst taking the last two photos.... spot (sorry!) the rain drops on the roof!   The sand dryer building & chimney is now finished apart from final wea

Barrow Road Update - The Pits

Having been effected by the Volcanic Ash Cloud - I should be in Canada - I now find I have time to start the inspection pits inside the roundhouse.   The task has been made easier by a set of laser etched sides and bases from York Modelmaking such that the task is reduced to one of colouring and assembly. The pieces are sprayed with primer, coloured and assembled using a jig and clamps.   Strips of 4 x 2mm plasticard were first added to the top of the side walls to form the timber baulks on

Sand Dryer progress

Further progress on the Sand Dryer walls over the past few days with all four walls now ready for assembly.                 The detail on the wall adjacent to the shed building has been omitted because it needs to be a flush fit.   I need to find a way of making the ventilation slats in the clerestory roof of the sand dryer and have decided to make a seperate unit out of brass.... further posting to follow.

Brinkley at the Cirencester Show

The Glevum S4 Society Area group, of which I am a member, took the group layout Brinkley to this show at the weekend - hence the lack of progress on Barrow Road.   This show was at Deer Park School, a very pleasant venue and a very friendly atmosphere.   Here are a few photos I took of Brinkley on Saturday.   Cirencester Show

Barrow Road Update - Wheel Drop

The extension to road 14 includes the hydraulic wheel drop and I have just made a visit to the History Centre in Chippenham to obtain copies of drawings of the electrical operated one from Bricklayers Arms [ now on the Mid Hants I believe] and another generic LMS unit produced by Ransome & Rapier of Ipswich. I have yet to find one for a hydraulic version. As a result there is a space left - 11ft 6in - on this road while I await a response from Manchester Records Office who have some informat

Barrow Road Ply & Rivets

Last night I managed to mark out the all the rivet positions, punch out the holes and fit the rivets.   The attached photo shows all the finished sleepers in position on the template.     At the front of the photo is my press tool with the rivet closing tool fixed to it. A croosing sleeper is positioned in the tool to show operation. To the right is the ply punch tool. Both tools are interchangable in the press. In between these tools are 3 sleepers showing the stages of fixing rivets into

Assembly of Office, Mess & Store

Time to put the building together...   Here are the front and side elevations in their painted state with the glazing and doors added.{non available for the end elevation - I must contact the supplier}       The internal structure is made from 2mm mdf, slotted together and glued. I have given the viewable internal walls a coat of grey primer.     The corners of the walls are mitred together at 45 deg... here is a shot especiall for Missy - to show the corner joint.     The ro

Office, Mess, Stores Roof

Having finished the sand dryer I can now return to adding the roof to the Office complex. As with the sand dryer I chose to use plasticard over the mdf sub roof and set about cutting and glueing pieces of 2othou plasticard to form the hipped roof. I also attached lengths of plastic rod on the ridge joints in preparation for the ridge tiles. The plastic rod also makes it easier to accurately cut and fit the tiles.     You will see I have added roof glazing - I forgot to cut the openings for

Barrow Road - Workshop 2

The front elevation is now complete, painted and features two sets of doors which can be opened. Bays 2 & 4 were the only ones used during the 1950/60s so I decided to carry out some modification to the Rowmark and glazing in order to make these two operational. You will see from the attached photos that I have achieved this by cutting the inner door rowmark to make it thinner down the hinge edge in order to fix a piece of square section tube. This tube extends to the top and bottom to form

Barrow Road - Workshop 3

Having completed the front elevation I had a short break before starting the wall adjacent to the sidings by assembling the end wall. With only one window this proved to be an easy task until I realised I had forgotten to chamfer the upper layer of bricks. A few passes with a craft knife later and this is the result.... followed by some paint....   Moving on to the sidings wall here are some pics of the interior elevation with the second crane girder in position... and the exterior wal
