Hornby Dublo R1

Dropped into the Thetford MRC open day. Nice bunch of people. Picked up a Hornby Dublo R1 for a Fiver. We put in onto the track and no sign of life but a quick clean of the wheels kicked it reluctantly into life. It will get a good clean and lube and hopefully that will get it running smoothly. To be honest at that price it wold have been silly not to take a punt on it!

Soldering

Must remember not to touch the hot bits of the soldering iron. Lovely blister on my finger tip now. Managed to get the droppers soldered on though!

Back from Doncaster

Had a nice time at Doncaster today. Came back with a nice little Dapol 67 in N gauge for my new layout that's under construction.

Heljan Hymek

Took delivery of a new blue with small yellow panel Hymek from a well known Liverpool shop.   Ran it in this evening on DC, then fitted a DCC Concept chip. Runs beautifully, very quiet. Well chuffed with it!   Detailing and a very light weathering to do.

More DCC hard wiring

Getting into this DCC lark, I thought I'd have a go at an old Hornby rat with the old Ringfield motor. I found the hidden pin that connected the pick up directly to the motor and separated that. I haven't sorted out alternative pick up yet but have tested the rest of the workings by temporarily connecting the black and red wires to the track, grey and orange connected to the brushes and it's running well. Looks a bit of an untidy mess but now I know it's working I'll tidy everything up.   I'm

Kadee couplings

We to the Peterborough show yesterday. Thought I'd give Kadee couplings a try so bought a couple of packs of No 18 (which fit into a standard NEM socket) and a pair of magnets.   Tried them out last night. Very impressed. I like the size of them and they work perfectly. I've played with Spratt and Winkle which I like and I've added staples to small tension lock couplings to be able to uncouple with a magnet but the Kadee's seem to be the simplest.   I agree they would look best on North Amer

Decoder hardwiring

Just successfully completed my first attempt at hardwiring a decoder. Fitted it to a Bachmann 08. Pleased as punch!

Moving to DCC

Building a new small layout and have decided to go to DCC. So far I've put a decoder into my Heljan Class 15 which is working fine and a Bachmann 21 pin decoder into my Bachmann Warship which now doesn't work at all! Ho hum - off for repair to see what happened!   I have a non DCC ready Bachmann 08 so I've bought a decoder to hardwire in.   Control at the moment is a second hand basic Backman EZ controller but if everything goes well I'll upgrade to something a bit more sophisticated.

A wasted weekend

I was looking forward to the London Festival of Railway Modelling this weekend, particularly as I wanted to see the Banbury layout as that was my old home town and I spent many, many hours spotting there. Unfortunately I had an arthroscopy procedure on my knee yesterday so instead I'm sat on the sofa with my leg raised watching mindless television. On the plus side I can plan my own modelling project and hopefully will be able to make a start once I'm bit more mobile.   To all those going to t
