At last an Engine - Stanier Stephenson Black 5 44767

In the workshop today is an EM Gauge scratchbuilt (by Mike Edge) model of the last LMS built Black 5 44767 - fitted with Stephenson link motion. An absolute peach of a locomotive!   It has been weathered to represent an engine cleaned at a shed.   three quarters front with the sun catching the dirt on the top of the boiler     top down     loco close up     tender close up     I want one!

Blue 47

Been a long time since I added anything to the blog on weathering so here is a recent commission - A blue Western Region Class 47 - Amazon.   The Heljan 47 is big and very heavy. Weathering something this size needs good reference colour photos - and I have a number of these but not of this loco.   First up Three Quarter side on view... As usual - top down - water and black ink, then bottom up brown ink and water mix as a base coat followed by powders once the ink is dry to the touch.   S

A Hunslet!

A day off from my umpiring duties means that I have time to do some weathering.   This is a Commission and is a Judith Edge 50T Hunslet built and painted by Mike Edge.   Here it is clean:     and then weathered...     Notice the diesel stains around the diesel level indicator....   more wagons to come.....     Enjoy!

A Duchess or two...

Finished my last two Duchesses for this week.   First up a blue nameplated Princess Alice. - the blue background is due to it being a Polmadie locomotive.     and then a nice Maroon Duchess with some added patches as per a lovely colour photograph I have of a maroon Duchess..     and a quick pic of the two side by side - my apologies but I haven't (yet) got any EM track to stand them on.

They are EM, have Ultrascale wheels and are from kits.   The two Duchesses are from DJH kits and have Digitrains sound on Zimo 648 chips fitted by me before weathering them   First up City of Lichfield     and Duchess of Sutherland     and a non sound fitted one - Rebuilt Scot Gordon Highlander from a Comet kit     Baz

Wagons and coaches....

Well in between umpiring I have finally managed to do some more weathering. At the moment this has been confined to a coach and some wagons.   The coach is a Hornby Hawksworth in Blood and Custard. I am not sure how accurate these are but they are very nice models..     and of the wagons well, yet another Murgatroyd's Tanker has been weathered (and the next one has just arrived)..     and I have been busy re-weathering a pair of Dapol Private owner rectangular tank wagons..

Tank Wagons

I am part way through weathering some of my own tank wagons - an Airfix Class B and a Mainline 14t Class B   Here they are together before weathering:   unlike Mike Delamar I haven't changed the walkways or ladders on the Airfix kit and I forgot to paint over the restraining bars on the Mainline vehicle - I will come back to that in a later blog.   So a general wash of ink and water followed by powder - then running wet ink down from the filler and adding dry powder to this results in:

A Stanier 8F

So I have been busy with decorating but found time to weather this 8F for a client.   It is a DJH kit in EM     Stanier tenders accumulated grot along the top edge (where the grease etc from the chimney and the coal from being coaled met..     The locomotive running gear (rods etc did pick up some nasty dirt on top of their grease and oil..   I hope this gives a good impression of what it looked like

UPDATED clean and dirty passenger Locomotives for an EM LM layout

I have never done "before and after shots of locos I have weathered - but I am impressed by Davey4270's shots of the O gauge Wagons I have weathered for him. So having received a number of locos from Mike Edge to weather here are some before shots - I will add the weathered versions over the coming days. First up a Jubilee by Mike - all I can say is what a beauty!     and now a weathered one..     next a Duchess - Princess Alice complete with Scottish Region nameplate..     and C

A BR Red Duchess..... a damsel in distress?

I have recently been busy with Murgatroyd tankers - but have had the opportunity to weather an EM Gauge Duchess. This is in one of the two types of BR Lined Maroon - and, as it happens, the owner is not over keen on that livery so..   a clean loco     and, after and application of inks and powders     and for some close ups...   running gear (powder applied while ink is wet)     and some dirt build up around the lower edges of the firebox/footplate "joint"     and some bi

A bit of this and that and a breakdown train

Lots of visitors to the demo stand at Warley where quite a few RMwebbers (and others) had a go. Had a varied assortment of commissions to do over the last week or two (and 6 more Conflat As still to weather). First up a Lima "Compressor Van" This has been fitted with Comet LMS bogies and is in EM. Its a vehicle Lima must have seen on Paul Bartletts brilliant Photo records. some coke hoppers - all £H Kit built and very fragile - 8 shown on this shot, 12 in total These are the same as t

Narrow Gauge Coal!

Step forward some ex Dorset Kits On3 East Broad Top coal hoppers   - first up a "clean" view,:     and now - after applying some watered down black ink and adding black powder once the ink i sdried     The ends are interesting as getting in to weather them (despite being lot bigger than my HO ones) is not easy..     and a close up of part of the doors and sides     and a quick look inside the hopper     no good colour photos for the internals so I hope they look like UK

A little bit of weathering...

I have been contemplating a blog of sorts to keep up with weathering I do for both myself and a number of clients across Europe. The latest item to be weathered is a Heljan ) gauge Hymek - as it comes its a nice shiny BR Blue and it is very, very heavy (3.5kg) which makes handling a trifle difficult!         Using Indian ink and water as a "undercoat" I washed all over the loco including underframes. (Black ink for the roof and sides, brown for the underframes and bogies) When dry I added

Jubilees

So for our new club layout Chapel en le Frith we needed Jubilees.   I had a Mainline one     which has now had a new Comet chassis, High Level gearbox etc fitted   then I had a Bachmann one   Billy Ruffian - engine shed cleaned   then I bought one of Geoff Brewins estate     Leeward Islands   and finally a Ks/Hornby mix     Sakatchewan - awaiting weathering.   I believe I have another Ks one lurking somewhere but I thinks that's enough   Baz

Iron Ore! updated with Dirty wagon shots!

Over the years i have acquired and built a number of iron ore wagons. These range from modified Airfix 16T minerals, through Parkside fitted kits to Bachmann unfitted examples.   I am now starting to weather the fleet as it appears we can run them on Chapel en le Frith - a layout under construction by Leeds MRS.   The Bachmann vehicles are a bit "chunky" so a dollop of weathering does help. This time I used a mix of sepia ink and water followed by adding chunks of ore dirt/rust adding powder

A Sentinel diesel

While doing a demo at Leeds Show over the weekend Mike Edge passed me a few locos to weather. The Sentinel six wheeler is a particular favourite of mine and Mike had a good selection of colour photos of a number of these locos showing where they get dirty and rusty. First up a side on shot     The detail along the lower edge of the side sheets makes use of weathering powder added to wet ink.     this three quarters front view shows the build up of grease and muck on the buffer heads -

J25

I have been weathering a J25 scratch built many, many years ago by Mike Edge. The "real" loco was loaned to the Derwent Valley Railway (DVR) in Yorkshire - this one is owned by someone who has a model of part of the DVR and is pictured in the new book on the DVR.   It has been washed over with a mix of black ink and water followed by a dusting of black weathering powder for the body of the loco and tender and a brown/black mix around the lower part of the chassis and wheels.     Detailing

N gauge and O gauge weathering

One of my colleagues bought a new Farish N Gauge 5MT at Warley Show for use on Headingley. I was asked to give it a wash over to get rid of the plastic sheen ..   an ink/water wash followed by a small amount of weathering powder and ..     Then Dave who was demonstrating next door to me asked me to give an O Gauge Parkside GW loco coal wagon a bit of a weather - complete with rust..   and the other side.. again using ink/water wash plus some rust powder and coal dust powder..
