Entries in this blog

at last..a loco!

After a busy few weeks not doing any loco weathering i have just completed a Johnson 1F for a client in Australia. Its a lovely loco and he wanted it slightly weathered so:   side on     from the front     and finally from the bunker end     Baz

fish and coal! wagons that is!

Been busy but now that outdoor cricket is over I can get back to doing some weathering. I have done quite a bit of weathering recently but haven't had the camera at hand to photograph it. However here are a few wagons to be going on with.. First up some Parkside 21T fitted minerals:     I have been experimenting on these after a conversation with Stationmaster at Swindon (STEAM) show as we are trying to get the crusty rust/coal look on teh inside walls of the wagon.. this had got to ...

Wagons..roll!

Been busy regauging and adding couplings to a lot of wagons recently. First batch to be weathered are a number of BR standard mineral wagons (24.5t and 16t) plus a brake van First up a couple of 24.5t and one 16t mineral wagon     Not all of them will have rust patches but all have "dirt" added.   Now two 16t Minerals     and a 24.5t mineral with a brake van..     and just to finish off some Blue Spot fish vans - a mix of Hornby Dublo and Wrenn     Enjoy!

Wagons and coaches....

Well in between umpiring I have finally managed to do some more weathering. At the moment this has been confined to a coach and some wagons.   The coach is a Hornby Hawksworth in Blood and Custard. I am not sure how accurate these are but they are very nice models..     and of the wagons well, yet another Murgatroyd's Tanker has been weathered (and the next one has just arrived)..     and I have been busy re-weathering a pair of Dapol Private owner rectangular tank wagons..

Clive Of India!

So occasionally I get to weather locos I really like. In this instance its a Hornby "Britannia" - Clive Of India On receipt I had to fasten one or two items back onto it and tighten one side valve gear retaining nuts, fit the flanged bogie wheels and add the goodies out of the plastic bag enclosed in the box.   Again this is to be a "shed cleaned" loco so...after adding a pair of ink washed crewmen and some real coal in the tender a bit of ink, some powder then a bit of a polish to get a bit o

A couple of Pacifics!

I have only weathered 1 A4 before so this was a welcome change to the LM locos I have been weathering recently. This is a Hornby A4 in BR Green - Merlin and I am very impressed by the quality of this model,     and a close up of this shed cleaned loco     And to balance the A4 a Red Stanier Princess - this one is Margaret Rose built by Mike Edge and painted by Graham Varley and again a shed cleaned loco.   I have fitted a Zimo sound chip to this as well as weathering it..     e

At last ..an ex LNER engine!

It isn't very often I am asked to do a "dirty" loco.. well here is the latest offering i have received to weather. Built and painted by Graham Varley its off to Carlisle and it is...   a V2 in BR Green in EM.     a close up of the cab area     and the dirt build up along the base of the bottom of the cab sheets and the lower edge of the tender tank     some of the weathering added around the cylinders     Hope you like it!

Another Duchess - in EM again!

This Duchess was built many moons ago by Mike Edge and was painted and lined by Larry Goddard (Aka Coachman). Despite the many years away from Mike it has now returned via Carlisle and has been regauged to EM. For Horsetan - this is the livery Maroon Duchesses normally had unlike the last on in this blog.   This is a "recently cleaned at shed" loco - which wasn't too difficult a Coach's paint job is still very sound after all these years. Cleaners don't "do" right into corners according to the

A pair of Great Central 4-4-0s

Next up - a D10 and a D11     The D10 is Mike Edges build of a Judith Edge kit and the D11 is a Bachmann Director with added brass splasher beading...   Some close ups... first the D10     and a burnt smokebox door..     and now the Bachmann D11     and its a got a bit more grot on the smokebox

Dirty Diesels...

Recently been working a on a couple of regauged (to EM) diesels.   Both have been fitted with Legomanbiffo sound chips (a simple plug in with some metal bashing mods for the speakers to fit..)   The locos are not to be filthy just a little bit dirty..   first up the Type 2 (Class 25)     with a bit of extra diesel exhaust crud on the roof...   and then a Type 4 (Class 40)     and a roof shot..

A BR Red Duchess..... a damsel in distress?

I have recently been busy with Murgatroyd tankers - but have had the opportunity to weather an EM Gauge Duchess. This is in one of the two types of BR Lined Maroon - and, as it happens, the owner is not over keen on that livery so..   a clean loco     and, after and application of inks and powders     and for some close ups...   running gear (powder applied while ink is wet)     and some dirt build up around the lower edges of the firebox/footplate "joint"     and some bi

Murgatroyds's!

A long time ago I pined for some Murgatroyd's Tankers from Triang - and never have I managed to get mits on any .. until recently when 7 of them fell through the door for weathering so.. First up a clean one - isn't it white(!)     and now a dirty version     Hope these are OK

Narrow Gauge Coal!

Step forward some ex Dorset Kits On3 East Broad Top coal hoppers   - first up a "clean" view,:     and now - after applying some watered down black ink and adding black powder once the ink i sdried     The ends are interesting as getting in to weather them (despite being lot bigger than my HO ones) is not easy..     and a close up of part of the doors and sides     and a quick look inside the hopper     no good colour photos for the internals so I hope they look like UK

Milk.....

Finishing 2013 with some milk tankers - a batch of six ex Dapol ones and one ex Lima one. I have added new couplings and rewheeled the Lima one.   First up two of the Dapol ones...     and a Dapol and the Lima one.     Although they have similar origins they are very different.   A couple of close ups - first the IMS tank side     and the running gear of a United Dairies tanker..     Considering they are used for milk traffic I can't find many "clean" photos of these vehi

Wagons and vans

So having been away from my workbench a while I returned and spent most of Wednesday weathering some vans and wagons -Unfortunately I didn't get photos of all of them "clean" but here are a few of the ones completed..   First up a couple of ex LMS unfitted cattle wagons..     then a Mink D - this is one with ventilators added to the ends - only a small number were built     and a SR BY   and a blast from the past and ex Ian Kirk kit of a 5 plank open     Finding good colour

N gauge and O gauge weathering

One of my colleagues bought a new Farish N Gauge 5MT at Warley Show for use on Headingley. I was asked to give it a wash over to get rid of the plastic sheen ..   an ink/water wash followed by a small amount of weathering powder and ..     Then Dave who was demonstrating next door to me asked me to give an O Gauge Parkside GW loco coal wagon a bit of a weather - complete with rust..   and the other side.. again using ink/water wash plus some rust powder and coal dust powder..

J25

I have been weathering a J25 scratch built many, many years ago by Mike Edge. The "real" loco was loaned to the Derwent Valley Railway (DVR) in Yorkshire - this one is owned by someone who has a model of part of the DVR and is pictured in the new book on the DVR.   It has been washed over with a mix of black ink and water followed by a dusting of black weathering powder for the body of the loco and tender and a brown/black mix around the lower part of the chassis and wheels.     Detailing

A Sentinel diesel

While doing a demo at Leeds Show over the weekend Mike Edge passed me a few locos to weather. The Sentinel six wheeler is a particular favourite of mine and Mike had a good selection of colour photos of a number of these locos showing where they get dirty and rusty. First up a side on shot     The detail along the lower edge of the side sheets makes use of weathering powder added to wet ink.     this three quarters front view shows the build up of grease and muck on the buffer heads -

A Stanier 8F

So I have been busy with decorating but found time to weather this 8F for a client.   It is a DJH kit in EM     Stanier tenders accumulated grot along the top edge (where the grease etc from the chimney and the coal from being coaled met..     The locomotive running gear (rods etc did pick up some nasty dirt on top of their grease and oil..   I hope this gives a good impression of what it looked like

Presflos.....

finally got enough time away from the builders to get some shots of Presflo weathering shots   First up ingredients:       some white poster paint ( my ink ran out!) a bit of water with a little tiny bit of washing up liquid in it, brushes, make up sponge etc and some weathering powder.   a brand new Bachmann Presflo..     I used a flat brush to put some mixed water/ink/soap on the top of the wagon then used my normal sponge technique to drag it down the sides ( and washed all ove
