Stanier Lobster aka a Stanier Mogul

I saw a Bachmann Stanier Mogul for sale on RMWeb. A swift offer and accptance meant it was shortly on its way to me. Thanks to @Rowsley17D for the quick arrival.   Only problem was..it was in LMS Lined Black. Great but I wanted a BR one. A quick strip down, a spray of Halfords undercoat then a spray of topcoat (Hicoat). New lining courtesy of fox/modelmasters (possibly easier to do the lining by hand but the use of boiler band transfers does speed the process) a new number - 42949 a Br

Fowler Tank - finished?

Just about finished my Hornby/Judith Edge Kits Fowler 2-6-4T.   The Judith Edge Etches ft easily onto the Hornby Body. (I used evo stick to stick them to the sides.)  I added some of Dave Franks' "Bent" mushroom tank vents, some Wizzard lost wax cast buffers, Gibson pony and trailing bogie wheels. I painted it in black with Car paint. Lining used my Haff pen and humbrol paint, HMRS transfers were then added and finally a dose of weathering powder used to give it  a bit of "life"

More locos "finished"...diesels and steam!

Well some more items are slowly getting finished..   A while ago I acquired a DJH Duchess .. named as "City of Liverpool" the name didn't match the loco/tender combination.. (Duchesses and City locos and tenders are a mine field)   Eventually I bought some Fox nameplates for "City of Leicester"  a very camera shy loco.     This has been "shed cleaned" but I notice I have not finished - I need a bit of dirt on the top of the boiler cladding (where you can't reach it

more locos sorted..

A number of locos have been laid aside for a while waiting new motors and gearboxes. Some have already been posted on here but I did  catch up a lot during lockdown.   This DJH WD had been built by someone else. The motor was out of mesh so.. a High Level Gearbox soldered to a cheap Chinese motor has been fitted  and a smidgeon of dirty weathering added.   This Wills 4F came without a motor or gears but did have a tender cab (used from Skipton as part of their "sn

fettled locos... weathered!

Having fettled a few locos I have now got around to weathering them using ink?water and weathering powders. I found some good colour photos ( but not of some of teh locos modeled ... Bachmann renamed Patriot Royal Tank Corps - through mud and blood to the green fields beyond   A 4F with high sided tender - need to go and replace one of the 4s   and a Model Loco Black 5   Baz

Some repairs and updates

Long time since I posted in my Blog. Been away and then ...   Positive thing about the Lockdown is more time to finish items in the "Roundtuit" pile.   I had a number of locos acquired without motors and gearboxes. I had some motors and gearboxes so...   take a High Level gearbox and a Mitsui motor,   add to an existing Wills 4F and   a 4F with tender cab.. do it again and   A 4F with a high sided tender   I

Renumbering for Chapel en le frith (Central)

To match the locomotives available to the needs of the layout a couple of renaming jobs were required... now undertaken.   first up my Mainline/Comet Jubilee - now Madras     and a Hornby Rebuilt Scot   the Middlesex Regiment     Baz

LNWR Locomotives...Cornwall and an Inspection Saloon and a NER loco...

Many moons ago my father built an M&L Cornwall locomotive together with its Inspection Saloon.     I lined it ..not sure I could do that now and this loco along with a NER Class A 2-4-2T with a D&S NER Inspection saloon has visited a large number of layouts over the years - including Stoke, Grantham and the Gresley Beat...     This is a scratchbuilt item ...   Baz

some ex LNER locos

Being from County Durham I do have a soft spot for ex LNER locomotives. Helping to "play" with Herculaneum Dock (owned by Mike Edge) I have become more interested in ex LNER (and ex GC ones especially) so ...   a Bachmann J11 was purchased while it was on a Rails Low price sale. New DG couplings fitted and a bit of weathering and...   I then had an opportunity to buy an ex Wills K3 in lined BR Black. Again a DG coupling fitted to the tender and a gentle wash over with some inks and powders

Back again! A pair of 8Fs

Been a while... busy with holidays, cricket and client work so only bits of works undertaken for me.   Two 8Fs. The first is a Ks kit built one, with a D13 and a MG Sharp gearbox. Quiet but powerful   I got this third hand and can be used on Chapel-en-le -Frith as well as on Herculaneum Dock.   The second is   a DJH one built by me while demoing at Hull Show with the late Mike Cook.   It had its original motor and gears and has got louder with age. So I fitted a Mashima and a High L

Another Caprotti..this time a BR Standard 5

Taken a long time to getting round to doing something with a DJH Caprotti BR Standard 5MT. I bought it pre-built but sans motor a while ago.   A New High Level gearbox had now been fitted with a round can Mashima motor.     It needs renumbering and weathering ready for use on Chapel en le Frith at Leeds show.   Baz

An improved Mainline Jubilee

I have finally got round to fitting a new chassis to a very old Mainline Jubilee - I had renamed it Sturdee many moons ago. I have used a comet chassis and valve gear/pistons kit, along with Markits wheels and a Mashima 1624 coupled to a Comet gearbox. As i was fitting the second guide to the piston on one side.. ping... lost it! I do have another kit with the etch and white metal parts so I will dig that our and finish this. I will check it runs then fit brakes, final pickups etc and a qu

One that nearly got away... a Ks Black 5

As a student at Leeds University I became a member of the Leeds Model Railway Society in 1976. I attended the Exhibition that year in October (Thursday, Friday and Saturday opening in those days in a dark (and cold early and late door) Corn Exchange. I was asked to help to operate a layout by Nicktoix which was also linked to the Wigan Wallgate/Gravity yard built by Mike Edge.   I had a brief overview of how it all worked and.. off we went. One minor problem was that A Ks Black 5 in LMS lined

And now a Jub and a Crab...

I acquired a couple of ex LM designed locos in recent months. It has taken a while to get them sorted but they are now coming along. Both were built the late Geoff Brewin of Comet.   First up a Ks bodied Jubilee - Leeward Islands. It has a Comet chassis and a Comet tender. I have finished it with lining and some replacement bits added.     and a 3/4 front view     next up a Crab from the same builder. Will loco body and tender and a Bachmann chassis   and again a 3/4 front view

How many ex LM design 2-6-4T can you have?

Long time since I posted on this blog. Today I was looking for a loco and came across a number of locos I hadn't photographed for my loco list. A lot are 2-6-4T - luckily they will come in handy for Mike Edges' extended version of Herculaneum Dock.   DJH Fairburn tanks awaiting weathering and couplings having been purchased recently.       a Trafford Park Loco     and a Bachmann version     of Lostock Hall   and a Stanier 2-6-4T     again last shedded at Lostock Hall. Some new locos...

I have bought some second hand locos recently. They came without motors so I have fitted Mashima 1624s to them.   First up Derbyshire Yeomanry a Millhome Kit in BR Green weathered down a little and due to be available for our new club layout Chapel en le Frith this October at the Leeds Show.     next up a Little Engines 04/8. For use on Herculaneum Dock next time it is exhibited..     and finally an Ex Geoff Brewin Crab - wills body on a Bachmann Chassis

Royal Scot

Long time since I added anything on my loco blog. I have acquired a few locos but haven't manage to finish any of them. Apart from this one..one of my favourite locomotives   The Old Contemptibles - a Hornby Rebuilt Scot gently weathered by me..     Baz

Stanier 8F - Hornby style!

I bought a second hand Hornby 8f quite a while ago. Before I went on my holidays I had repainted the can sides and renumbered it as a BR engine. I have started to weather it so..     and a bit of a close up     Big problem is that there is oil leaching through the various "holes" in the bodywork... so more weathering will be taking place...   Hope you like this..

a Great Central Director.....

Finally got round to weathering my Bachmann Director. It has had a brass splasher top beading added and those awful sprayed on wooly silver lines on teh splashers removed before weathering...   (It might just get some new wheels as well...)     and a closer look at the front end..

A BR standard and one which became one...

Been a while since an update but...   I have a few BR Standards. The Bachmann one     replaced an Airfix on which had a new chassis and running gear fitted. This one can pull most things but does anyone have a way of filling in the screw hole in the connecting rods other than modelling putty?   And another Bachmann loco - an ex LMS 2MT Mogul..

A Scottish Engine

Been a while but work.decorating/life in general is getting in the way at the moment so for the time being   A Nu-cast ex Great North of Scotland 4-4-0.     I may well sell this as it was built for layout started many years ago when I lived in Stevenage - Catrine.

A single and a NE 4-6-0

So sometimes My father made some obtuse locos...   first up a Stirling Single.. Ks tender drive and if anyone needs any Romford wheels for one of these please pM me as I may have a large heap of them..     my only questions are -- Why? and What else to do with the spare driving wheels?   And then a really useful loco - a scratchbuilt Raven S3 (B16 to us in BR land)   Romford wheels, DS10 motor     Barry O

Diesels..

Two different diesels   first up a Dave Alexander Clayton - built and painted by Nicktoix. Two DS10 motors and a tad more powerful than the RTR ones..     and now for something completely different..   take a Mainline 03 with a bust motor - add vulcan chassis with romford wheels and a DS10 motor - a bit of a gentle wash over and hey presto....

a prototype... diesel

Just to show that I don't always weather my stock..     a Dapol prototype deltic on a modified set of Lima bogies - I know have replacement wheelsets to get it to run on code 75 rail... just need to fit them..

GW Super power

Sometimes my father built the strangest things...   including..     a standard Ks 2-8-2T complete with "D" Ks wheels and an HP2M....
