Shapeways Middleton Bogie arrives.....................

The nice man from UPS brought me a package from the Netherlands today, You've seen the CAD on the previous entry so here's the printed Middleton Bogie, this is done in the white detail rather than the white strong flexible, twice the price (ish) but worth it I think.           reaction.....................well chuffed!

Some video of Grime Street taken this last weekend at Peterborough.

The Grime Street team had an outing to Peterborough this weekend to exhibit at the Festival of Railway Modelling, we had a very enjoyable if busy weekend, the layout seemed to go down well and I was fairly busy answering questions, mainly about the cyclist....   We were well looked after and had a thoroughly great time and it was great to chat to several RMweb members from the boss down.....!   I'll be honest and say I didn't really get to see as much of the show as I'd have liked but that's

Can you tell what it is yet? Ok, more CAD!

I'm sure everyone's getting bored of these CAD pics by now, but here's a little teaser of work currently in progress, So can anyone answer everyone's favourite Australian, and a part built model tram CAD doesn't win?         Answers on a postcard to............. !!

Wiking Control87

Now being a sucker for moving road vehicles on the FCS and obviously the Magnorail cyclist I must admit I'm tempted to add a Wiking Control87 vehicle into the mix....   These being very much like the FCS vehicles but radio controlled....not a cheap item but one of the trucks altered to say a BRS wagon being reversed in and out of some of the factory yards on Grime St would create a bit of interest at exhibitions I think.   A gimmick? Yeah probably but I always view it that we're there to ent

First Gateshead Car arrives from Shapeways............

First print of the 4mm Gateshead car has arrived from the Netherlands, this again is in the slightly rough WSF, but it has come out pretty well overall, the roof detail and clerestory roof have come out very well. I'm still waiting on a few in FUD in both 2mm and one in 4mm, hopefully they should look pretty good.   The distinctive gates between the trucks on these cars is already available as an etch from Mark Hughes, and the Tamaden chassis is pretty close in wheelbase etc, but doesn't have

The rebuilt section makes its debut..

The reworked original section made its debut at the Southwold show this last weekend....lots really still to do but passable....anyway a couple of pre show pics showing the new 'opened out' extreme right hand end..........

Some real modelling..........

Enough of the computer generated stuff, as time permits I've been continuing work on the extension to Grime Street here's a few pics,     Overall shot showing the entrance to the coal yard and the corner building frontage.     Coal yard office and retaining wall in early stages     The beginning of the corner building, frontage is from an altered Walthers Merchants Row II, I'll build the remaining parts and pitched roof etc, the unit has been cut and altered to suit the available

On yer bike!

I'm sure loads have been impressed with the working cyclists on the Dutch layout De Hezelpoort 1927, I've just got back from the Wakefield Exhibition where it's about 4 deep most of the time, next door they have a little display layout of the system and I've just bought a starter kit! 5ft of track, a cyclist and motor unit, now where to install it? I quite fancy a scooter and a motorbike on it too............   More details on the system here http://www.magnorail.com/index_en.html   In othe

Trick cyclists, or my adventures with Magnorail.........

As per the last entry, I purchased a Magnorail starter kit (new cliche warning, every layout needs a working cyclist or two!). Not having had that much spare time recently I've eventually made a start.   On opening the box it quickly became apparent that a retro fit might not be the easiest, the Magnorail track being approx 6.8mm deep. So I decided to make a sub board to get the track all up an running before hacking into the boards were it will end up being fitted.   In the box there is

I don't fancy your chances in the tour de France...........

Or messing with the Magnorail cyclist.   Having assembled the Magnorail cyclist, which is fiddly but not hard (legs clip together and go on to pegs retained by the upper body, feet onto the clear wheel which clips into the bike) and tried out a card road surface with a thin wash of plaster (to paint consistency) here's a quick video of a test, the jerky motion is because I'm pulling the chain rather than using the motor   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve2I_6YRVTg   Well it works!   Will

Sideswipe averted, or how not to kill your model cyclist....

What's that thing they have on the back of trucks now, 'do not pass on the nearside' ? Well more by luck than good management I've managed not to mangle a cyclist with a sideswipe. smile emoticon I've re done quite a bit of the Faller circuits using magnetic strip so was having a bit of a test before scribing the new plaster bits.... Sorry about video quality but trying to get it all together at the same time was fun....

Leeds Show layout pics......

Well that was rather an eventful month or two, having missed RMWeb live through illness, next outing was Leeds MRC show this last weekend, as the layout doesn't often get put up in its full form now (it's getting too big!) opportunity was taken to get a few pics of the current state of play. It's as complete as it has ever been, but you know the old mantra....'it's never......' well that remains the case.   Several things are planned before its next outing in February (Rochdale) but as per nor

Pyewipe Car Shed?

First of the GC long car prints arrived today, I've more coming in the next couple of days including some in 'Prime Grey' from I Materialise, anyway I seem to have a few bodies around so, now beginning to wonder if a model of Pyewipe Car Shed might happen at some stage.......     6 Gatesheads and 2 GC long cars!   Some long car pics showing a bit more detail, I think the GC cars will either use a Halling E mech, ( the articulated one) made rigid or perhaps 2 Bachmann Brill drive units in

Blatant self promotion time....

As per the last post we spent the weekend at the Halifax MRC show, well looked after and a really enjoyable weekend, it was also nice to be home with layout all down and packed in less than an hour!   The self promotion bit, well I was a bit shocked to be presented with the best layout trophy, previous winners including Barrowfleet and Liverpool Lime Street, so to be even considered pretty much made my day.....chuffed to bits as we say up here!   Me and a cup.....

3d printed brass pivotal trucksides.

Very few of the trucksides used for the Leeds tram fleet have had to been produced as there are plenty of resin or white metal cast parts about. However there wasn't anything for the EMB pivotal trucksides used on the Chamberlain cars that became known as Pivotals obviously due to their trucks, which in theory were meant to combine the best of the 4 wheel and bogie designs, in practice they weren't a success as the linkages needed plenty of maintenance to work well, the majority of the time in u

Magnorail Cyclist.......

As per the recent entry Grime Street board 3 made its public debut at the Festival of Model Tramways last weekend.....   The whole event wasn't without stress and drawbacks as I didn't quite manage to get quite a few things finished in time (ie stringing the overhead at 11.30, painting the road surface at 12.30 the night before and the weathering the road surface at 5 am before loading and heading for the show is not good for your stress levels)   However the one thing that did perform faul

More work to the Sheffield Supertram CAD

A bit more done to the Supertram CAD, there's a couple of little bits to sort on the body (front rubber bumper is one) but the bodf is nearly there now.   Chassis and articulation is next to be sorted, but that's more 'modelling' than copying the prototype.   Few more pics

Sheffield Supertram CAD update.

More work on the Supertram project, roof detail now done, some of this is a bit OTT and probably won't print, but I want to see what we can actually get away with before deleting anything.   Anyway pics               Couple of minor mods to do to the body and that'll be then done, running gear for chassis and fitment pretty much sorted using Halling bogie that'll clip in, so coming together nicely, Vinyl graphics are pretty much likely too.

Leeds 301 arrives..........

First trial print of 301 (LCC1) arrved today with a slightly ammended Middleton Bogie. They are in the 'bumpy' White strong flexible medium, overall I'm quite pleased with it. I also have on order the same car in a new medium called frosted ultra detail, this gives quite superb detail but I'll need to see how it turns out in the printing process. In theory one of the prints will be used for a resin kit master, however with this process it's relatively easy to re scale the models, so should any

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside...............

Hot on the heels of the Pilcher CAD comes the latest one, I can't see me painting one purple and Ivory and numbering in Leeds 603, and I very much doubt it would clear the corners on Grime Street being a massive beast of a tram (50ftx8ft), but it should appeal to those who like to model a certain costal tramway in the county palatine, very much work in progress. but most varients are/will be covered (different fronts/roof windows/beadings etc).   Interior is to be altered but might well do som

Leeds 600 fresh from the paint shop.......

Yeah I know that I said the next entry would be something else! Anyway I have just about finished spraying Leeds 600, it still needs the fenders painting brown and a bit of fettling here and there but it's not a million miles off......     Advert boards will be added later, as they would be a pain to mask, grey back, ivory front. 600 only had 4 Leeds crests, one on each saloon, so transfers will be pretty easy....   Chassis is a Halling C mech, which I'll fit a false floor to, with half s

It's grim up north............

Quick picture and update on the row of Skaledale terraced houses. Still work in progress, gable end still needs work and plenty of weathering still to be done to the roofs, back yards to be detailed next, better start having a look in the Langley catalogue...........

I'm on 'Easy Street' !

As was mentioned before I'd ordered some 'Easy Street' girder rail for the proposed extension to'Grime Street', it's produced in the US and available from http://www.proto87.c...tcar-track.html (usual disclaimer)   So what do you get?     Well this is a twin left hand points module, as you can see you also need the plain and curved track sections to complete a working point, so I duly ordered some! Also shown is one of the downloadable drawings available on the Proto 87 website, these ar
