Allotment

Started to work for a few minutes and spent an hour on the allotment, fitted light into the factory. More difficult than I thought, going to make up some frames tomorrow and a greenhouse. Had to coax a pig down from a tree for this photo. Strange how they get about when I’m not looking.... Just holding off doing the brewery I suppose. Better keep going...   Thanks for looking.

Doors

Thanks for the comments and likes, much appreciated. I found another office in the pile of scraps, I used the weighbridge last year for a bit of fun with my nephew during the holidays. Remembered to touch in the edges, put in new windows.New sills after a touch of powder to indicate shadows. I made a 'kit' of door parts. Will give them a coat of spray and dry brush before fitting.     Better not mess up the cornerstones now...

Time passes so quickly...

It's been a long time since I posted, the layout has progressed, but is still some way from completion. The track was laid, not without issues and the learning curve has been steep at times. Peco solenoids are controlled from a control panel and NCE powercab. I finally understand how electrofrog points work, the back scene was painted a couple of weeks back and have been placing the hard standings for the buildings. The warehouse has been dropped at the moment and the factory became a practice p

On the warehouse floor...

Rather than just join the existing parts of the warehouse together, I’ve cut out the floor plan out 4 times from mounting board. Hopefully the walls can be assembled onto them.     Thanks for looking.

Don't forget to varnish powders....

Disaster! Well maybe not entirely....Missed the column when varnishing, as I added the details my massive fingers did their best to undo a good hours work. Carried on with the additions, and repainted before a lighter job on the weathering. Seems to fit in more anyway. Realised I'd also lost the water pipe, but luckily found a piece of heat shrink that was the right size. Bonus in that it had a good texture as well. Extended the wooden fence on the near side of the yard, health and safety said t

Capping stones are a pain...

If it could go wrong today, it did. Straight edges were easy, corners were another matter, 50% of what I cut were wrong, then the replacements were also reversed, so I had to have a third go. The inclines were just as bad. At least the side door went to plan. On to the greebles now... Glad today is over... Thanks for looking.

Bridge planning

Since deciding to move the double width bridge to this end, now got to work on what happens as it hits the back scene. Possible going for an abandoned track, lots of opportunity for trees and ground cover to hide the far end where the corner is. Fiddle yard entry through right hand arch. Going to create a flatter wall behind the factory, retaining wall pushes too far forward. Thanks for looking.

Today's work and overview

Completed most of the hard standings, gaps to be filled and some edges to complete. Cleared up stray ballast and thought about adding a goods platform... Factory at the far end just short of entrance to the fiddle yard (such that it is). The control panel linked to a cobalt ads8. Switches are wired to operate pairs if necessary, 2 or 5 will operate both points Still not sure about the location of the buildings, warehouse windows and retaining walls interfere. Haven't really thought about th

Back to it

Seems like an eternity, but the Christmas break gave me a push to do something. A strip of LEDs is hanging over it at the moment while I decide on how to mount it permanently. Christmas delivered several workers for the allotment and waste ground, so they received a quick wash along with the pigs and took up residence.. I saw the frame for the warehouse crane while browsing and decided that it was the way forward and I’ve just knocked it up after tea. Away for a few days so the painting will hav

Decisions, decisions...

Modellers block for a couple of days, pretty sure the Metcalfe brewery will go in the middle of the shelf. There are some nice combinations creating a long platform servicing all the buildings, so this would suit the long straight track at the back. At the left hand end I'm thinking of combining a couple of warehouse kits to make a large structure as a contrast to the smaller buildings at the right hand side. I think the crane in the same are would be a bit too much, so this could be moved to co

On time so far

Warehouse coming along, ran out of windows so time for a break. No major calamities today, most parts were reusable though I had to go to the reserve for a couple of parts. One panel is temporarily in the wrong place, it should be at the end and a door panel needs to be put in. New quoins need to be cut, getting straight edges along with a straight fold for such narrow pieces is a morning job.     Thanks for looking.

Action today

Filled in many gaps in the hard standings, increased the bridge length and planned the yard. I'm going to us the remainder of the factory kit as a low relief background. As it's smaller than the warehouse it might give the impression of depth and perspective. Half a goods shed for the corner building and the office opposite it. At the moment it's all held in place by small magnets, I'm using them as clamps when building. Bought a load of neodymium discs from eBay for not a lot. The over bridge w

Progress today...

Well, had a bit of a shift around with the warehouse to add a bit of ‘weight’ further to the left, started to take some of the warehouse apart to rearrange and improve it a bit. Makes you realise how bad some glue is, spray mount is great for getting an even join, but after a while really loses its stick. This section was a spare from earlier and used as a test bed. Windows and frames were removed and the frames sprayed with an off white to tone down, I’d made the replacement frames some time ag

No plan ever survives contact....

Well, work got the better of me, but I was determined to get somewhere so 30 minutes on Tuesday to build the crane (what a great kit), sprayed it Wednesday morning before work, finished first swipes at weathering last night. Looks like it could be a derelict, so maybe using some ratio ‘halt’ platforms perhaps as a newer drop off point. Lets me make the ground between crane and bridge waste ground, so maybe some abandoned rails and other rubbish. Letting it settle for a day or two now to see how

Time to move on.

Capping and weathering done, time to begin moving down the backscene, 2 feet complete except for the front area. Already paved but still lacking ideas. Any suggestions? Now to move on to the retaining walls, then got to think of the industries. A Metcalfe brewery, warehouses and small factory and entrance in stock along with an engine shed. The engine shed could become a factory to fill up space before the brewery towards the other end. Will add the goods crane when I've moved down the back a

Burning the midnight oil

Managed to get the leds I was after, 8mm warm white. Must remember to paint the insides of the buildings black before assembling from now on if they’re to be lit. Will mount switches along the front panel for individual control of each building. Looks like they need a draught excluder in the office. Thanks for looking.

Goods shed mods

Dropped the height of the goods shed to make it more acceptable. Small office with badly aligned corner texture really obvious. Thanks for looking.

Back to it...

Set a target of getting this finished before the end of the holiday, given that is three weeks away this could be a bit optimistic but you never know... Wasn’t happy with the way Farend was taking shape (there is still no name for this), for the past few days I’ve been positioning various collected bits, leaving it, then looking at it the next day. Today when I sat down I didn’t want to move anything so this is the plan. The peco depot along the front edge has probably been one of the longest

I wasn't going to do this...

The mundanity of making retaining walls required an antidote in the form of adding some life... What is worrying is how the pigs get about...yesterday they managed to get on the roof, when I started today they were looking over the fence. My wife denies all knowledge...   Thanks for looking.

Good and bad news

The retaining wall is finished bar a few capping stones... ...but it is 2in short of the bridge at the near end. Will need to put in a plain section and hide it behind some trees. There is a patch of waste ground there already.   Thanks for looking.

Almost there now.

I like to make look functional if possible, so I’ve added a door for vehicle access in a suitable place. Some examples show a sliding panel in front of windows, so I’m going for that. Most of the windows are now in place and all but the roof levels are glues in place. End panel tomorrow, sliding door, roof and corners to cover yet followed by down pipes and details. Thanks for looking

Day of heavy digging...

First thing this morning the site team moved in and lifted the hard standing. Luckily there was a bit of heavy machinery on standby which sped up work. Frank watched it from the cab as nothing was moving. He hasn't said much but he wants the site work finished so he can get some steam up and move some goods. Grounds a bit wet yet, so the guys wanting the allotments can wait. They'll have to make do with a lineside hut for sheds. Give it a month and things could be sprouting nicely.   Thanks
