Something for Bus Spotters!

nevard_120529_Bristol-LS_DSC_5233, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr. At RAILEX over the weekend an hour or so before the show ended I finally got around to having my tour of inspection and came across this rather nice diecast EFE Bristol L.S in Southern National green livery on the hosting club's secondhand stall. The clincher being the Devenish Draught advert which sadly now promotes that long gone well loved Weymouth brewery.   All starry eyed, I donned that dirty gabardine raincoat, greasy

Get a high backscene to cover those kebab stains

nevard_110412_brewhouseQ_IMG_9686_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   Brewhouse Quay: The stone on the Scenecraft Oak Hill Brewery buildings out of the box is very light and correct for such a building when new. But a 100 or so years on and the Bath stone will have darkened with algae and pollution; to address this, the stonework has been dry brushed with various Humbrol matt enamels and darker washes to help blend theme in with the areas of the scene. Since taking this snap

A Fresh Consignment of Casks

nevard_110421_brewhouseQ_IMG_9786_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.         Brewhouse Quay: A recent consignment of ales casks litters the end of the yard near the cooperage. Many of these have come from the Black Rat Brewery in Saltash near Plymouth for refurbishment courtesy of Mr Sullivan MD of the brewery. Note the two rather large Hogsheads next to the building on the the right.   The follow this thread - take this LINK.

Combwich at RAILEX!

nevard_101106_wycrail_IMG_8338_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   Combwich will be having a rare outing at RAILEX this weekend (28 & 29 May 2011). Tim Maddocks' excellent SDJR Enginewood will be right next door, and the intention is to run occasional trains between the two layouts.   To add to the excitement of this rare operational marriage of layouts, it will also be a chance to see Model Rail's specially commission Sentinel in action - at least 2 months before the produc

Today's Railway Fairytale (or how long will it take to appear on Wiki)

nevard_110625_BrewhouseQ_IMG_0275_webJPG, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   This ancient 0-4-4 Midland 1P spent much of its working life on 'the Branch' of the old Somerset & Dorset Line. The pretty loco was withdrawn in 1959 and spent much of the following year next to the water softening plant at Bath Green Park shed awaiting removal - or so we were all lead to believe!   In November 1960 the Marriott, Dent & Foster Brewery bought the locomotive to shunt its extensive qua

Count Down to Wycrail!

nevard_111016_catcott_IMG_1527_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   The excellent Wycrail in High Wycombe is in just under 3 weeks on Saturday 5 November, and this year I've been invited to take Catcott Burtle along for the day.   'CB' is all ready to go, so there's no midnight oil to burn, which will make a nice break fom the norm, but I do need to finish repairing an ex-LSWR lattice signal post that one of the cats chewed the top off. I don't know why, white metal and brass hardly mak

Bachmann 3F

nevard111228_bachmann3F_DSC_0671b_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.     The new Bachmann 3F you may recall from before Christmas, has now received its final session of weathering after a renumbering to Templecombe's 43216. I tend to weather engines in stages, breaking for a day to two to appraise the effect under the layout's lighting and how it looks in relation to the layout and other stock. I like to get a uniform but not necessarily totally even look between engines and other items o

All up and running...

nevard_120119_combwich_DSC_1024, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr. 43216 arrives at at Combwich with the 2.15pm service from Evercreech Junction, August 1961   Yesterday afternoon, Combwich was assembled for an up and under prior to this weekend's show in Guildford. Much to my surprise, it ran pretty well first off, apart from a slight problem with a Peco polarity switch being a tad lazy - next job will be to dismantle the layout and ship it down to the show which is just a couple of miles aw

Sunday Smog

120428_4-track_DSC_4215_BW, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr. Sunday morning's bit of silliness is the replication of a stretch of mainline in South Wales with an ex-GWR pannier tank in possession of a rake of empties just having left the mainline. The 9F flying along behind has a load of freshly filled wagons heading for somewhere distant or maybe just Cardiff Docks.   Sunlight has just started to penetrate the fog and pollution – also known as smog it was a typical feature of industrial B

Sunday's Snap: Under a High Pressure Sky

nevard_101205_cementQ_DSC_0736_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   As a brief reminder of warmer times, under a high pressure summer sky, Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 No. 43017 pulls away from the stone screens at Cement Quay.   Tech: this shot was simply taken with a long exposure under a single ceiling light in the spare room where Cement Quay was set up for a few days.   Bigger version here!

Secrets of Brewhouse Quay (orig post 24 Dec)

Whilst RM web was having its well-deserved Xmas break, I still kept blogging externally (I usually copy lock stock and barrel here as well).   Here's my Xmas Eve post.........     nevard111223_bachmann3F_DSC_0529_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Bachmann Midland 3F weathered and renumbered as Templecombe's 43216. This loco was the 3F allocated to the former Somerset & Dorset line and was withdrawn in 1962.   For photographers, this was taken on a mid-1960's Nikkor-S (Ai co
