2mmFS diamond jubilee layout challenge

hat thrown into the ring...

I think I can thank...or blame Ian (Scanman) for this as his recent blog entry got me thinking.   Am currently building Thurso and entering it into the MRJ Cameo layout competition so when the 2mm Association recently announced their 60 years Jubilee layout competition I had decided not to enter. Then Ian's blog made me realise that the MRJ competition would be submitted April 2019 which would give circa a year to make something for the 2mmFS competition.   The rules are fairly simple which

don’t grass me up...

Afternoon all,   There’s been a bit more progress on the layout recently. David kindly offered to help out with the backscene image so am currently awaiting to do another test print and fit at work before I commit to vinyl.   I have also been working on the track adding chairs, cut from the easitrac sprues and adding to the PCB turnout. These and all the other chairs have been touched in with rust colour paint and a small test area of ballast has been undertaken - firstly the sleepers were w

back to the backscene...

Afternoon all,   Following Kyle’s exhibition last weekend, it’s time to crack back on with Meeth. I will be redoing the turnouts on Kyle (mentioned in the last post) but I want to think that through a bit first.   Following a number of tests with the photograph, David (Kylestrome) kindly offered to take the photo I had and extend it and do some photoshop...namely remove the large tree from it and cut and paste in some smaller ones. David then sent me a new file and I managed to track down th

setting the (back)scene...

Afternoon all,   A little progress since the last post has concentrated on trying to sort the backscene early so I can dress the scenery into it.   I started to look at a number of readymade backscene available but felt none really suited the context. My fallback is to paint the sky pale blue as there will be trees in front however I first did some research around Meeth and happened by chance to find two landscape photos from an Estate agent selling a house in Meeth and there were accompanyi

a few experiments...and a way forward...

Evening all,   Quick update on Meeth.   Having condemned all the trackwork on Thurso (a regular episode in my track building ) it was time to stand back and re-evaluate. I decided the best way was try a few experiments and the simplicity of the Meeth layout lends itself to this.   Firstly, a return to turnouts made from PCB and code 40 bullhead. This followed on from my struggles with the easitrac turnout kits...great kits...but just not for me. Also some plain track and some using etches

peeling back the layers...

Afternoon all,   Firstly, many thanks for all your interest and kind comments regarding this project - that helped me realise that it is indeed a goer...once of course matters Thurso are dealt with.   That doesn't mean I can't tinker around with it mean time though especially as I really enjoy the research period for a new project.   It's quite difficult to source photos of the line off the Internet, many being the rail tours at the end however a couple of book purchases have been made an

scenics started...

Evening all,   Following the decision to drop Thurso and move the Exeter mock up to the garage has allowed me to refocus and concentrate on the one project again - Meeth.   Having wired it at the last entry this weekend saw the installation of the backscene former. I decided to crack on and glue it in place as otherwise I would have faffed about I am in two minds whether to do a plain blue sky backdrop or use a digital photo as per Kyle. I did find a photo of a Meeth landscape last week on

putting on a brave fascia...

Afternoon again from me,   Whilst I had eluded this project would be a slow burn, it has been escalated up the priority list to combat my current track building crisis emerging from the Thurso layout.   Being very simple in track layout, it seems the ideal place to start my trial of the Versaline track system using PCB sleepers, etched chairs and rail...cosmetic chairs that are available will also be considered.   So to do this, I decided I needed to build the baseboards to allow me to get

RIP it up and start again...

Afternoon peeps,   Followers of my blogs and threads will note this is a usual post in the evolution of anyone of my projects...and now it’s time for Meeth   Following completion of ballasting I was shocked at just how bad the running qualities were of the layout, which prompted the recent foray into my 7mm project.   However a trip to Railwells a few weeks ago, saw Mick Simpson’s superb 2FS Callaton layout and the running qualities were enviable so I decided to get out the scrapers, scr

phase one - check...

Happy New Year all,   Quick update on progress and perhaps the point to draw a line underneath it...for the moment.   To recap, following my track building incapabilities on Thurso, I decided to build the track for Meeth to act as a test bed for a way forward. After experiments I decided I would return to build turnouts in PCB and use easitrac for the plain track areas. The goal was to try and have the layout wired by 2018   After a flurry of activity in the last few days, I am pleased to

Beeching’s second coming...

Morning all,   After a lot of thought, I am afraid it’s time to pull the plug on this project and this time I think it’s the end.   Whilst it was started as a 2mmFS DJLC entry it’s had a few setbacks with regard to ballasting and running qualities however the biggest issue is the enthusiasm for it. Granted the last 3 months the mojo has been low however the main problem is the layout has no future beyond the DJLC as it has very limited operating potential. Even attempts to in

Meeth - back on track...

Evening all,   You May recall last year after a ballasting disaster and frustrating running qualities I ripped up the track and put the project on hold...however I am pleased to update that there has been recent progress.   I took the layout up to the 2mmFS supermeet in Tutbury recently and received some nice feedback on it, which comprises my DJLC 2020 competition entry. More importantly it’s being done in an effort to try and improve on my rural scenic skills...especially i
